it's kinda confusing to watch that the top-down view has the players positioned opposite from the side view

No comments after over a year makes this late hit less embarrassing. I believe it was R. C. Bell who wrote, in Board and Table Games from Many Civilizations, that when anthropologists found a game being played by the people they were studying, if they understood the rules, they described the game as being like checkers, and if they didn't understand the rules, described it as being like chess.
