IMO, JR is the best drum teacher on youtube. The videos are always so well done and his approach is always something I can wrap my head around. Most videos are just “show off-y” and discourage me. Jeff’s videos do the opposite. They inspire me. Thanks Jeff for yet another helpful video!

Love the way you make everything easy to learn and stressing the importance of locking down the mandatory pillars from which to build upon. You're not only a great drummer but an incredible teacher. Thanks so much

Thanks Jeff! This and your "Ultimate Guide to Playing Drum Fills" gave me a great foundation of knowledge to build fills off of. The way you break down the ingredients in the sauce is a great way to help others apply useable knowledge - opposed to memorizing stock licks. Any chance you'll do a video that goes more in-depth into the next steps for fills? So very grateful for your work!

your first minute of this video is so true. after leaving high school i couldnt afford lessons and became an internet study-drummer, and after months of trying to just follow tutorials, i found it much easier, challenging, and FUN to just watch drummers play live sets and tried to do what they were doing. getting bogged down in the lessons of things was such a drag, not to mention rough on the confidence

Been playing drums since I was 15. I am 36 now. Always learning something new on drums. It is a never ending process. Your videos are the best. Mostly because I am a visual learner. Keep it up :)

Recently picked up drums again after 15 years, and decided to take it more seriously this time. Your videos are gold, thanks for these basics videos!! Regarding fills, one thing i hear all the time that separates a decent drummer from a great drummer is this: does it stop grooving during a fill? I’ve never been the most chopsy drummer, but i feel it’s super important not to drop the groove. For example, listen to the snare fill going into the rideout of “Don’t You Forget About Me” by Simple Minds. It’s a multiple bar fill, with fun 32nd note accents all through it. It’s kind of chopsy… But it still grooves like crazy… in fact it somehow grooves *even harder* than the basic pattern! That’s a great drummer at work. Your feel is always great, and you keep the groove happening during your fills. People should take note of that in this lesson, too.

This is super helpful. I have been stuck on making my fills more advanced for the longest time ever and this jus helps to clarify things. I now have a direction on how to practise. Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing drum knowledge! :)

You are a genius, and your presentation about drums lesson is too much naive and smooth that a 2 yr kid can also learn from it. I am very much impressed with you.

Great post, lots of interesting ideas for beginner to intermediate students. Your flams are more open than I would let my students get away with….almost 32nd notes. They do sound very good in your examples which makes them ‘your own’. Really am enjoying your videos.

I grew up listening to buddy rich, sandy Nelson. Years after they them. Was so influenced by them. See alot of there classic style in your approach. Only differs is buddy riches stick grip and style. Keep it simple stupid. You force elements, makes simple tasks to be a difficult task. True story.

love your content. one thing i've never seen in YT video though is how to play the right fills for the song. it's all very well playing fills to a click, but how about playing them to a backing track/live band to demonstrate how a drum fill needs to interact with (a) what everyone else is playing/singing, and (b) the song as a whole?

I have some questions. How often do you make a mistake and end up with the wrong sticking order? and how do you fix it so that it doesn't cause you more mistakes down the beat? Or in case that you don't ever make a mistake, how much did you practice this concept to get to that point?
@JAA8022 жыл бұрын
Jeff, I really like your videos. Any particular reason for the flipped stick on your left? Just doing so for power and volume?
@JeffRandallDrumming2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jon. The flipped stick just gives me a fatter sound on the snare.

Can you make a video showing beginners how to do the exact groove that you are playing before the fills at 7.47 ??!! I have had that groove in my head and limbs for at least 30 years! I know it's simple but just those syncopated ghost notes really do it for me haha
