Welcome to my Music Gear on a Budget series of videos. Today we're taking a look at the Behringer U-PHORIA UMC22 audio interface.
This particular sound card can be used to record anything you like thanks to the mic input and line input on the front. These preamps also sound great to my ear. Even with the cheap microphones, I am using in this video the audio quality is just as good as my regular audio interface.

@@Liza-pw4ie by the looks of it it seems to be one of those mics from the BM line. they're really cheap, but mine (a BM 800) starts at around $11 here in my country. so there's a chance the one in the video is a different model or a pre-owned (maybe both).

You should do the U-Phoria UMC 202 HD at lest or a 204HD about $50 - $70 they do 24bit 192K. All I own are rock solid I have the UMC 202 to the big one the UMC 1804 24bit 96K you lose the 192K on this unit it has 8 Midas preamp inputs & light pipe ADAT for 8 more Mic Pres. No Drivers needed w/Mac. These are far superior to the UMC22 it's only 16bit 48K maybe they changed the specs to 24bit now?
@utubehound69
@utubehound69 6 жыл бұрын
@Lando27Music If you get one at lest get the UMC 202 HD it records & plays back @ 24Bit 192K. The 204 HD has inserts on both chn's & MIDI I/O. At lest I know the UMC 404 HD has MIDI I/O they can be had for under a $100 & a cheap as $50 for the 202HD New. I shy away from The UMC 22 being it's only 16 bit* 48K Note*( they may have up them to 24bit) vs The UMC HD versions that do 192K at 24Bit for the rest of the HD line of UMC save the UMC 1804 Mack Daddy that only go's to 96K 24bit. 8 chn's w/ADAT for 8 more mic pres. Most will never use the 192K in their recordings . It doubles as an Audiophile grade DAC unit. I turn a couple of audiophile on to the UMC202HD & they freaked how much better it sounded than three digit DAC's that run up in the hundreds of dollars. Then sometimes you might want to record @ 192K like just an acoustic gtr w/a vocal , or your client wants to recorded at 192K imo 192K is over kill imo & take us a LOT of space on you SSD/HD to think just a 15 years ago to get 192K 24 bit interface you would shelling out some serious money. Win Win on The UMC series .

Maybe stupid question but does the unit output 2 separate audio tracks on the USB cable so something like Audacity can adjust track volumes after recording?
@intheblues
@intheblues 6 жыл бұрын
If you have two mics plugged in for example you can output the left track to one track and the right to the second (so yes). The other option is you can record to a stereo track using both inputs. Most people line up a mono input track and then select which input (L or R) they want to record from.

my first interface was the Behringer UM2 which is basically the cheapest piece of plastic on the market. Didn't work half the time, and the other half it sounded fuzzy. After that I upgraded to their UMC404hd, the 4 XLR version of the one you're reviewing. Sounded amazing, loved it, and had a ton of flexibility with the I/O. Now I have the 1820, the 8 XLR version, and their ADA8200 preamp. I love the sound I get through my interface and preamp and I love that in this day and age, I can get 16 XLR inputs for barely $500

Shane - thanks for this and the podcasting on a budget video... that led me to buying the kit you recommended in the podcasting video. And, well, this is embarrassing... I was in a horrible loop of trying different combinations of older, not supported Behringers USB drivers, ASIO4All - and I was going in circles with low or non-existent mic volume. Read endless online postings complaining about the lack of drivers. Then I watched this video. And saw that you had the 48v phantom switch turned on! For some reason, I was convinced that this might have been a bad idea (I've zero experience with XLR mics). During your vid, I saw the 48v led glowing at the front. I switched it on. And everything changed for the better! And here I was thinking my MAC-o-phile friend (coming to work on a poddy with me tomorrow) was going to have a last laugh about Windows USB microphone drivers.... I'm now in good shape - and surely, I won't be the only person to make this mistake! Cheers

Cool. I bought both of those products a couple of weeks ago, the Pyle mic and the Behringer interface. I haven't had time to hook them up yet but I'm glad to see I didn't make a bad purchase. I'm building my first home studio on the cheap. These kind of videos help a lot. You should review a cheap condenser mic too. The $12 - $35 range. Many come in packages with shock mount and pop filter. Thanks Shane!

My only complaint about having this card was that Windows 10 had a bug when configuring this. It installed it as a 1 channel input, so for months I couldn't record both channels at a time. But once I figured that Windows issue, this little card has been GREAT for 2 years so far. And surprisingly good build quality for the $35 i spent

I have both the Pyle mic and the identical Behringer UMC22 interface. It's a good beginner setup. I'd also reccomend a $19 Behringer DI box for recording clean guitar tracks simultaneously to the mic'd amp. This gives you the option to re-amp or try different plugins.

I'm just starting to build my own bedroom studio after years of playing and I love this series. Can't wait to see more. How's the UR22? I'm thinking of getting the Behringer UMC404 which has 4 I/Os and is dc powered plus it's much cheaper than the Steinberg or the Focusrite. I'll be getting a pair of JBL 305s as my main monitors/speakers.
@intheblues
@intheblues 6 жыл бұрын
The UR22 is great. I liked the first UR22 so much I ended up with two of them. I can't hear any difference between the UR22 and the Behringer but the drivers for the UR22 are much easier to get up and running. I think the Focusrite stuff is good but it's not better than the Steinberg stuff even though its probably more popular.
@garrettendi
@garrettendi 6 жыл бұрын
The UMC404HD uses different drivers to the UMC22. The latter uses ASIO4ALL but the 404 uses Behringer's own proprietary drivers. It's much easier to use and the settings to manage latency and buffer sizes is really simple. I would strongly recommend the 204HD or the 404HD, as they are cheaper and just as good IMO as the "bigger" brands. That then leaves you more money to spend on a decent mic! The only gotcha is they've changed the drivers recently. I'm using version 3.29.0 with my UMC204HD and it's great, but I can't vouch for the latest version.

Shane, of course it doesn't "sound" bad, especially for the price this interface is fantastic, but the real elephant in the room you should've addressed is the noise floor, the actual sound is more dependent on the microphone than the interface, because the main "problem" of cheap interfaces is the quality of the preamps, respectively the noise level and you didn't touch at all on that or at least give us a few seconds of silence to hear for ourselves. I hope you will take this into account for your next videos.

Chances are that mic cable has two inner conductors that would allow you to go fully balanced if you changed the jack for an XLR connector ; or had someone do it for you if you haven't passed your Sloddering Iron Pilot's Test... A quick unscrew of the jack plug would tell you.

Which should you get, A USB Audio interface or a small portable Amp, one like Yamaha is selling? I'm just learning guitar, an electric. I am keen to look at Garage band on the Mac Book.

Hi Shane, at 0:42 you mention the cheaper soundcard, I assume the UM2. I have checked the specs and the only difference I can see is the pre-amp (Xenyx vs. Midas designed) and the outputs are RCA instead of jack - am I missing something? Thanks.

Shane, no video about audio interfaces is complete without reporting what's the lowest latency you can get and what ASIO driver sample rate/buffer size settings you need to achieve that. You can certainly get decent enough preamps and ADC/DAC in this day and age, but I think latency is what sets good cards cards like Focusrite apart from the rest of the crowd. Behriner didn't even bother to develop a proprietary driver for their card and rely on Asio4All - that sounds suspecious. I saw some review of UMC22 before that the latency wasn't that great at all which would precludes the use of this card with real time digital modelling and effects processors (BIAS, Guitar Pro etc.). So what were your findings?

Did you plug the guitar into the Mic input as its looks like its the only input that has the preamp? Im just setting up now, and having a closer look im thinking there is only one Midas preamp and its on the Mic input and not the INST input. And does the guitar need a preamp?

The sound card is $130 on amazon, and $50 on the given links now, wow.

Great review. One question I have is how would the instrument line perform with a guitar going through the Audio interface then into a DAW for those of us who would use one of these to record guitar?

Hey Shane, this is a great series because, as you know, some musicians budget is limited, I think this helps big time! Keep up the great work bro, I've always liked your presentation, rock( Blues) on!!!!

Exactly what I needed as I'm contemplating buying the Pyle mic and this audio interface. Now I'm not sure, given that I just want to record one guitar, whether I should buy an audio interface or just an XLR to USB cable ...

Great series man! Looks like you’re enjoying the experimentation too! Heh, now you just need to pick up a dirt cheap guitar (maybe one of those Walmart “Gibsons), put a good setup on it, play it through ToneBridge or AmpliTube on your iPhone and A/B it against your high-end set up! 😉🤙🏻🎸
