Great video. I love when this particular discussion comes up in your talks. I've never heard anyone explain the non-dual perspective so well, and without making it sound mysterious or new-agey. I really wanted to hear that objection in the end. :)

@Ulitarism _it could also be that_ *you* be the only existence, dreaming also me and what I'm telling ;) I think that the starting point of Rupert argument be the substance of the experience that each of us has (or is). This is the only common denominator on which we could communicate. Any other approach is only a play with ideas. Namaste

@Ulitarism Maybe you are too much focused on a view based only on the body/mind complex and the scientific answers. Do you know from where do the thoughts come? Are _you_ able to observe the thougths? are they your own property? It seems to me that you have too many answers (coming from other minds, perhaps) and too few questions to be deeply replied to by the true _you_ . And for this reason you don't do the only essential thing to do: to let all your thought and beliefs fall aside for only few minutes, letting you know _who_ is there with the awareness of being and _what_ that awareness is. From that perspective, the words you have written above will appear to you as spoken by a drunk man. BTW before retirement I worked as a software developer for more then fourthy years: I know how _programming_ does work ;) So my advice is to give more attention to your true deep self and less to the rational reasoning based on previously acquired "knowledge". Namaste

Once you understand, it seems very easy, but for the one who is still struggling, it is EXTREMELY, almost impossibly difficult, because it needs a complete 180 degrees turn around of the mind... It doesn't seem much, but it is... This is very evident in the person who asks... I can relate to it strongly, even though I believe I'm a little further on the path than him...

well explained, Rupert. If people could only drop fascination with the content of awareness and focus on the receptor of that content instead [alert awareness= awareness that holds the potential of focusing on an object, without ever doing it]. Then perhaps they would be able to detach from identifying with (the concept of) a body that contains consciousness, and then also move away from the concept of individual minds-egos and perceive the illusion of the 'relative reality' as originating from one single 'universal' mind-ego. Various ways in this struggle of getting rid of the identification with the ghost ego that creates, and then takes over, a body-mind separate from others, operating in an hostile or appealing world of objects. "If the ego, which is the embryo comes into existence, everything (the world, God, bondage and liberation, knowledge and ignorance, and so on) will come into existence. If the ego does not exist, everything will not exist." RM

The mind has a choice to end the dream before the pain. The mind by nature revolts at pains and is attracted to temporary pleasures. The waking state is a collective dream. The dream state an 'individual'.

here's what I don't get. Rupert is telling us that we can never experience anything outside of our consciousness, which is obvious and I agree. Because of this fact we can't know if there is a really a world out there (matter) because we can only experience things through our awareness of our senses and we have no way of verifying if our experience is an accurate reflection of reality. At the same time he wants us to use the same awareness to determine that consciousness is not located in the brain. So it seems like he wants us to not trust our awareness when it comes to matter but then to trust it when it comes to consciousness's location. seems like he's trying to have it both ways.
@carmenl163

I don't really get your question. I do notice you say that "we can only experience things through our awareness of our senses". I don't think that is what Rupert is saying, because that would imply there is something outside our senses that we can become aware of after our senses have recognized it.

I disagree with a comment which Rupert made at 4:02 where he stated "Yes, if you cross the road the car will hit you and it will hurt. Whether you do it in the waking state or in the dream state". In a dream, you do not feel pain, hence the old saying of pinching yourself to make sure you weren't dreaming.

In hypnosis, whilst you are in a similar state to REM sleep, if I say you have been bitten on the neck by a mosquito, you can wake up not remembering it, but have a swelling or even a blister where it supposed to have bitten you. That's just one example so your body/ mind does feel it in a dream you just don't remember on waking. Fascinating stuff.

Here's one that will throw you for a loop: "The physical world is in reality nothing more than inert matter. The inherent life and animation in all forms, from atoms to man, come from the subtle forces of the astral world. These, in turn, have evolved from the still finer forces of the causal or ideational creation, the creative vibratory thoughts emanating from the consciousness of God or Infinite Consciousness. Man, the microcosm, is in all respects, an epitome of the macrocosm. His physical body is gross matter. His life and his ability to perceive through the senses and cognize through the consciousness are dependent on the subtle powers and forces of his astral and causal bodies, all instruments of the indwelling soul or individualized consciousness of God." - Paramahansa Yogananda (God Talks with Arjuna, Vol. 1, p.59)

If someone shoots a gun in the air and the bullet strikes someone who was totally unaware of the shot, they are just as dead. So the question is what is the difference if its matter or mind. So what is the benifit of saying there is no matter? We see the affects of matter.

This in my view is the most unsatisfying answer Spira has given. You can still have matter within the mind. When everything is an illusion, it doesn't matter if it is illusion or real. This "localisation" of consciousness is what people may call matter. So matter could be as real as infinite consciousness. Then there are instruments that measure things. There are multiple independent ways of looking at something that goes beyond the mind's experience. The mind experiencing something and a camera recording of the same experience or really an indirect sensor's recording of the same experience are all agreeing. It is not just two mind localisations agreeing. It's not true that in a dream I don't cross the street, etc. I've done crazy things in my dreams, flying, setting myself on fire, etc. Physical laws don't apply. I also sometimes know I am dreaming. So how come there are consistent physical laws in infinite consciousness? Panpsychism isn't the only theory that adds consciousness to matter. There are many others that fundamentally say the universe is sentient, energy is sentient, that the fundamental substrate is consciousness. It all ends up being the same as nonduality. With the screen analogy for example, there's either a phoshor exciitation (old cathode rays tubes) or now with the LCD, there's energy input. So the energy landscape changes. And that's all matter is, matter is hard energy. So infinite consciousness can be thought of as an energy field. What is energy? The capacity to do work. That sounds sentient to me.

If the proof of a singular consciousness lies in the fact that we all see the flowers (we share perception) then how is it that some perceptions (thoughts, emotions, sensations) are not shared? It would seem this is where the distinction of inner/outer, self/other arises.
@user-zl8nh1bp6e
@user-zl8nh1bp6e 6 жыл бұрын
I suppose this is not intended as a proof of a singular consciousness, but rather that the singular consciousness is a way to make sense of the fact that we all share parts of our experiences. As Spira said, that they overlap with each other. But they only do so in part, and for that reason there doesn't seem to be any reason why there couldn't be parts of my experience which aren't shared by anyone else, such as my dreams and memories.

Everything that can be described by language and thought is not awareness., Carlos Castaneda called it the Tonal or first ring of power. This Tonal is the sense of a physical world based on descriptions passed on through generations., The Tonal changes as epocs change. Castaneda described the Nagual as the pure awareness unfettered by thoughts and descriptions. He referred to the Nagual as the second ring of power. In Castaneda's stories, the whole thing seemed to be about shrinking the Tonal and entering the nagual through personal levels of energy and internal silence. It was called sorcery because the nagual was somehow used like a wild stallion at the risk of personal annihilation. The Spirit and the unknown and the unknowable were all considered dangerous to the ordinary self in terms of not dying. The third ring of power or the fire within referred to the surviving the ordinary death of consciousness and remaining aware with an evolved energy body. It seemed as though awareness was selfish insofar as wanting to take back the awareness it has bestowed on life forms, which would require the person to die. Only by making a carbon copy of the awareness through recapitualtion of ones life could the Spirit or awareness be duped into relasing the indiviual self to go free.

its weird how people talk about matter without first defining what matter is properly . ie . matter is a relative term and depends on the level of vibration of the observer . ie . if the observer is a human then matter is a vibration similar to the physical body . matter will be different for beings with different bodily vibrations . its also a given that logically matter and energy are the same thing and just depend on the position of the observer . Whats more it is the mind that creates matter and therefore energy aswell . therefore matter and energy are quite clearly seen to creations of the mind . you could call it thought ? And while this video goes around in circles trying to explain the world of matter outside of mind etc . you can plainly see . have you ever heard that everything is thought ? now you see . when this rupert guy is talking about consciousness he would be better to refer to Mind as a principle . Mind exists as a principle and also a subject simultaneously . both locally and universal , concentrated and expanded, all depending on the viewpoint . thoughts of the mind are what we see as matter in this physical world on earth , If we could see thoughts of our mind as they exist on a mental level we would see into the world of energy . If we could see further than the world of energy we would see into the world of god . Its obvious that the human mind is tied to matter therefore is incapable of transcending the world of energy . for being able to see past the world of energy then something more than the "mind " is necessary

I cannot agree that events in dreams can "hurt". Occasionally, a pain in the body, such as a sore back, might cause something in the dream to appear to cause pain, but events entirely within dreams, such as being hit by a car, never cause pain. They might cause surprise, anxiety, anticipation of pain, fear, and so on, but not actual pain.

Matter both does and does not exist. It doesn't exist in any independent, inherantly seperate way. It does exist conventially, just as a mirage in the desert appears to exist as water, or a hologram. Can you say the hologram exists? Yes, but as light only. Can you say the mirage exists? Yes but only as a play of light. It exists, but it's only a play, Maya.

The problem with this explaination is that it doesn't get you any longer along the path (to enlightenment) because if you now state that you understand this concept of "no matter" you have only got rid of your old concept of how reality works and put this concept there instead. You may understand this intellectually but not be a aware of it which is what counts :)
@TheKstuart
@TheKstuart 7 жыл бұрын
That is not a "problem" - the explanation is only for those people who have doubts about spirituality, because of their belief systems. If you read Q&A's with Ramana Maharshi, he is constantly answering with "Is that your doubt? ... " because once you have no doubts, then you just do the practice. And by the way, there is no "longer along with the path" in this case, since Rupert teaches the "Direct Path" which has no "length". It is a simple practice, and you just do it. Basically, it just consists of stopping paying attention to sense perceptions and thoughts, and just "resting as Awareness" aka "being aware of being aware".

I honestly don't believe there is such a thing as 'enlightenment' anymore, after all I've been through. I did once upon a time in my early teens. What does the term enlightenment even mean, for example? A special state where there is no more suffering? It's a very vague, translated eastern idea, and everyone who believes or doesn't believe in it has a different interpretation of what it is. The experience of utter freedom is definitely real and capable of happening. And there are varying states of suffering/anxiety/depression/agony/misery/discomfort, as well as peace/contentment/happiness/joy/elation/euphoria/bliss/whatever else, which generally change (although sometimes they can last for months or years, depending on various things). But I've never once seen or heard anyone who's actually 'enlightened', there are just people with varying states of consciousness and perceptions of reality.
@TheKstuart
@TheKstuart 7 жыл бұрын
Enlightenment is a vague term used by Western writers, which is why most teachers and sages use the term "Self-realization" which is more specific. It simply means the permanent removal of the identification with a fictional "person" who is separated and limited. Then one identifies with the Absolute, aka Brahman, aka Satchitananda.

Rupert says, "When forms start to appear in consciousness, what are they made of? They can only be made of the stuff that is already present in consciousness. What is that stuff? It's only consciousness" ... this is all assumption put forth as fact. If separate objects exist, and consciousness comes from a brain, objects wouldn't be appearing "within" consciousness. Consciousness would be simply being aware of objects which are not consciousness, but which appear to be, do to the indivisible nature of consciousness itself. To say that these objects "must" be made of consciousness is ignoring the fact that Rupert's model is only an alternate model of reality, and a model, by definition, is a view that not been proven.
@Geogaddi4
@Geogaddi4 4 жыл бұрын
There is no alternate model of reality. In fact, there is no model at all. You say "if separate objects exist, and consciousness comes from a brain" which is the greatest assumption of all in the first place. When you assume that is a fact, then you will end up running in circles trying to explain matter and consciousness as a product of matter. You get stuck in duality.

@@Geogaddi4 Geogaddi4 I didn't assume anything here, Geo. I didn't assume that Rupert was wrong, but I also didn't assume that he was right. I merely pointed out that Rupert isn't admitting here (like he does in other videos) that his view of reality IS a model, his own belief system. Here he is stating it as a fact, and he has no way of knowing that. If you are wearing orange-colored glasses, the world looks orange. If you are viewing the world from a non-separate medium (consciousness), the world appears non-separate. Just because I see how believing in thought can create the EXPERIENCE of separation, does not mean that I see that ACTUAL separation could not possibly exist. How would I know if objects really exist outside of consciousness? I can only tell you how my experience FEELS. And likewise, how would I know that an object I see is made of consciousness, simply because my experience feels non-separate? Both views are belief systems, and Rupert has said that the Consciousness ONLY model of life makes more logical sense to him. But I have read other awake people who believe that consciousness is a product of the brain, not reality. One was a Zen guy, who was really into the latest developments in brain science. Me, I don't know. I just didn't like the way that Rupert asserted his belief as a fact here. He has, like I said, though, admitted it's a belief elsewhere.

It is literally impossible for forms to exist outside of perception. Look around you now at the WiFi signals right in front of your face. See them? That's how all things are and in fact must be when robbed of perception. Because you can't ever have perceived (form) without perception.
@sethjones4916

@@SpyWhoLovedHimself Hey Spy. Just because you are not perceiving something, does not mean it's not there ... like the wifi. You may not see it, but it allows you to read this. So, it's true that perception is needed to be aware of forms, but that doesn't mean that they don't exist without perception. It doesn't mean that they do either. Both are belief systems. Rupert has admitted his model is a belief system elsewhere, but he gets carried away sometimes, when pushing people towards a belief that he thinks is more reasonalbe. His thinking is that, since our experience is that objects arise with our perception of them ... aka, they are not separate from our perception ... that the most rational model of life, should be based on our experience, rather than on a model that is not true to our experience. Yet, I would think if his wife leaves the room, that he doesn't believe that she ceases to exist. Rather, he projects (believes) that she is still existing within consciousness elsewhere. Most people, however, are projecting (believing) something else ... that consciousness is separate from what it perceives, that it originates from within a body, and that despite appearances, the objects it perceives, exist independently. A good illustration of this belief, is to imagine that you are wearing orange-colored glasses. The world appears orange, but despite your perception, it's not orange. Rupert thinks that it's more logical to take your perception at face value, since that's your experience. Anyway, it's an interesting discussion.

Oh my... I am „new“ to Rupert’s teaching and I had very much the same questions as the man from the audience. Like: Is Rupert asking us to comprehend that there isn’t a car when we are not aware of it? Is Rupert seriously suggesting that the flowers are not in the room after everyone has left the room? I get so much of his teaching and sense that it is and will be helpful to me, but these thoughts made contract and question the sanity of the whole Advaita Vedanta teaching. However, I think he is not asking that of us. I got an opening in my contracted awareness/understanding from this exchange... I realized that I was trying to grasp what Rupert is saying, from, and as, my seperat mind. I understood him saying, no the flowers are not there and than yes the car (also the flowers) is there. Very confusing form the single separate Mind. I was not including in my understanding, the experience the ever present inifinet consciousness (in which everything is taking place) is adding. My Infinite Consciouness is manifesting reality (the cars, flowers etc.) in time and space, thus and in addition „previous“, simultaneously and continuously, through many „other“ points of consciousness as (things and bodyminds) all around me. Thus, (in this „Dream“) providing a rich environment of the 10.000 objects, people and places that interact with the laws and intelligence of physic’s upon oneanother. It is true that we are locally only experiencing or not experiencing what we as Mind in consciousness aware of through our perceptions, but as the infinit consciousness all around, in the roll of the „other“ in that realm, all manifestations are continuously exists, stays in place and interacting, if I see them or not. Thus: The flowers are still in the room when everyone has left the room. And are in the room (seen and smelled by me) when I (separate I) enter the room, even though I (separat I) previously did not know of the flowers in that room... the same with the car hitting me, even though I did not see it coming, it is real and it will hurt me in my experience as separat self. Further the question: does a tree make a noise if no one is there to see/hear it fall? In my Infinite consciousness no. To my local consciousness (which is not present) no. If I place a camera which is recording it, yes. Also: If I am in the living room at a friends house and need to use the bathroom, though I don‘t see it, it does not exist for me. For them it exist even when I may not know if or where it is. They know and therefore it exist first only for them and someone bevor them has created all the parts beforehand and created the bathroom bevor they knew it. When they tell me and I find it and it will work for me by the intelligent laws of physic‘s even though I do not see‘s where my wast goes or how it works after flushing the toilet... but the consciousness/mind who is the plummer knows, which is enough for it to work for me, without me having to know the details. In the opposite way: if someone were to removes their home while they are on vacation, though they think they know there home exist, it would not reappear just because they belief it existed... in the realm of the mind, cause and effect, what one consciousness (the one and only) has removed/caused, is experienced by all separate minds in the one conscious experience. Am I on the right track? 🙃

Consider this: You're watching a movie in a theatre. It turns out to be a horror movie and you're scared and are kinda cursing the movie-hall on playing this evil movie which is making you nervous and sad. It would've been better if the movie theater played a comedy movie - you think. To make matters worse, the theatre policies don't allow you to leave mid-way. Now consider this: You suddenly remember your friend Rupert who'd once told you that movie is played on a screen.So now you shift your attention from the movie and all the scary and frightening characters it's playing - to the screen on which that movie is playing. You realize that the screen is still the same as it was before the movie was being played - slowly you also realize that it's just a movie - none of the ghosts in it is going to come out and hurt you because now your attention is at screen and not on the movie (that's playing on the same screen). Normalcy returns and you aren't scared anymore. You agree that everything appears in the consciousness. Are you conscious of the consciousness or are you conscious of the objects in the consciousness - is the question! The life's a song if you choose the former and it's a horror movie if you choose the latter. Choose wisely.

For anyone to suggest that matter and consciousness/awareness are separate entities is illogical as how could one see the movie without the screen and what use the screen were there no movie. To even conceive of this as an absurdity should you choose to reject this challenge classical dual paradigm/interpretation one would have to admit that a perceiving consciousness would be needed to class it as nonsense therefore inadvertently undermining the very argument put forward.

Hello Jaime! Agree what Justin already said to you, and I have also an experience of that Rupert talks about as a philosopher and buddhist. It’s too hard for our minds to understand a concept that has no limits and are dimensionless. We live in a world there we only can see and understand everything in four dimensions and therefore our ”subjectiv” mind cannot really understand the unlimitied, everlast and dimensionless conciousness. In my meditations I have learned to take away all concepts of a limited world/mind and you can feel in yourself that your ”higher Self” is an ”everknowing substance” (is not a substance really but the mind cannot go into that with the thinking of it) and in right meditation you know for sure that you are the knowing of all that you can know of (your conciousness) and later on in your path you’ll understand that THAT knowing is the only knowing there is. You, as a human beeing are made of knowing, matter are made of knowing that you can perceive with your perceptions and this material world, and all minds in it, ARE IN the absolute knowing and that is the combined conciousness!! Have a nice path and don’t struggle around the total understanding with thinking about it... just be what you already are in the ”power of now”..... A beeing of thruth, peace, understanding and love!! NAMASTE// Steffe🌟🙋‍♂️🕉🌹

You are right. I am aware of the context, even more, I am aware that the universe we live in is mental, constructed and made up of ideas and concepts that are invented by beings that I have not known and that I had no connection with. However these ideas and concepts should be refined according to the proposed perspective that Rupert’s teachings forward in an exceptional way. In agreement with this teaching I must be faithful to my own experience. In my experience there is no time in the conventional sense of the term, there is only this timeless now. It is normal that in the “absence” of time, space, the idea of matter will change. Matter is an irrational belief in this context. See …energy cannot be created and cannot be destroyed according to current understanding but funny enough it seems to me that it is self created. The Bing bang theory is a religious belief for materialists who want to believe in another kind of creation (a godless and purposeless/random/accidental one)… If we change the perspective when we look at the idea of matter for the sake of logic we must change the perspective in relation to other concepts as well, such as the idea of gravity, mass, weight, energy, movement, inertia, resistance and so on. If we understand that matter is a term given to a non-material experience "things" will not change at the fundamental level but our perspective on things will, therefore our experience is enhanced by changing the semantic content assigned to the concept of matter. This enrichment is nothing more than a simple step towards discovering the semantic richness of Vedic texts. These teachings come with a different cosmologic model, one that is far far away from resembling the heliocentric model of Copernicus. As time, space, matter, Copernicus's heliocentric model of the universe is a religious belief. So…in my experience the "world" is flat and nobody ever experienced a spherical world...why should I believe in a heliocentric model? Let me ask you something...do you really see my point or you believe you do? If the universe from a second ago disappears without us feeling anything and another one is present now mysteriously why should I worry about the heliocentric model of cosmos disappearing too? If the universe is just a memory ...a thought in the timeless now, how can I measure anything? I need time for circumnavigation. No time... no physical reality...no objects...no form... no oblate spheroid...just an infinite plane of existence and the knowing of it... You have to decide when you believe in time and when you not... That is why it is relevant for me „the shape and form of things”

Rupert is a robust cove indeed. It appears to me that in order to talk about matter one has to accept that there has to be a perceiving consciousness through which and because of which mater can be discussed. Were there no consciousness, indicating formlessness and timelessness then nothing could be conceived or created. For a scientist or anyone to suggest that matter pre-existed consciousness implies that matter can exist outside of mind which is rationally absurd because it takes mind to consider that it must have preceded mind. Logically therefore mind must have been there first. But even this is a rhetorical device and very much the map and not the territory so to speak as first, second, cause and effect all suggests time as though there was a position whereby consciousness didn't exist and then somehow it existed. The mind cannot grasp, as Rupert rightly points out that which has always been, is and will be.

Too much weight on the "inside/outside" metaphor. Matter is "outside" mind, but also "inside" mind (i.e. it exists whether it's perceived or not, _and_ it can be perceived). I'm more inclined to go the Buddhist route and say that "consciousness" is the dubious term. Essentially, there are two broad ways of using "consciousness", in one sense, it's a public, observable phenomenon. Monkey sees tiger, runs, flings poo, tiger sees monkey, chases - that whole class of events, which anyone can observe. How many fingers am I holding up? In that sense it's an un-mysterious concept, quite a simple thing, in which we have no trouble saying a physical thing is conscious of another physical thing. Trouble comes when we take that schema A->B, A is concious of B, turn it around 90 degrees and put it on our face, to so speak - and then it seems like there's an A "inside" us that's looking out at our perceived B. IOW, we're not happy that it's just us the physical object perceiving B, just like we'd observe the tiger and monkey, but we think there's something else that's the conscious thing, doubling up the function as it were ("putting a head on top of our head" as a Zen master said). Then it seems like consciousness is a mystery, a radically private thing that only we have access to ("my consciousness"). And also then you get the mystery of how this mysterious thing can be conscious of matter, because then the previously unproblematic third person usage gets coloured reflexively by this mystery: i.e. it then seems that a physical thing's being conscious of another physical thing can only be possible because there's that hidden thing inside them that's conscious peeping out of _their_ eyes, it seems like they can only be conscious by virtue of having one of those, just like we supposedly have one of those ... whatever they are (_mind,_ as used in the video). Of course after that, the problem is collapsed in a non-dualism that takes consciousness as the overall "container". But it's better, I think, and more congruent with science, to take matter as the overall "container" - it doesn't need this mysterious consciousness-thing, in order to be conscious. "Consciousness" in the third person refers to a special class of observable behaviour (things being aware of other things, avoiding bumping into them, cleaving to them, avoiding them, etc.). And in first person, it doesn't refer to anything: what exists for first person is just the world, standing as it is, its sheer being being enough. There's no "lighting up" of it necessary.

Ugh, I suppose the sun doesn't rise above the horizon in the east and set below it in the west every single day. People 1,000 years ago didn't know that it's daytime in Australia when it's night time in NYC. What's your excuse?

I don’t agree. I’ve had dreams where I’ve been shot, stabbed and even fallen off a building and it didn’t hurt in the dream. In fact I’ve never experienced physical pain in a dream, only emotional pain or suffering.

thanks Epiphany. Before i touched the hot iron rod my mind didn't feel pain, it felt pain only when i touched hot iron rod. so the pain in induced by an external entity, that mean, there is a world out there. So non duality is disproved!!.

I'd love to know how you're able to experience that pain without consciousness? Consciousness is what allows you to be able to experience that pain. That experience comes up in consciousness.

Channaveera Swamy what are you talking about when you said external world? external to what? to body? @@robertrhau7342 No. You do experience PAIN through FEELING. Consciousnesses (con-sciousnesses) has nothing to do.

He tries to redefine 'Matter' in such a way that it makes it easier to follow his script. If it doesn't fit in this script, then it can't be used for his argument, which fails anyway because if it is a different thought altogether, then why are there so many interpretations of this "single' consciousness? If this single consciousness speaks to us, then we should all be on the same page, should we not?

Imagine that you are 57 years old. You still go to work, have two grown children and a couple of grandkids. You have a best friend that you go bawling with every day. Life flows smooth for you, everything as planned and normal. One day on your way to work you see a man standing next to a huge window of a shoe store. You notice it's your buddy. You get concerned if everything was ok since the situation and his behavious was out of his character. You stop and get to him, call his name out and he turns to you, smiling at you and pointing inside the shoe store. Your concern grows even more since you cant recognize him any more. What's wrong dude? You ask. The guy ignores your question. You explain to him you are actually on your way to work and in a hurry, offering a ride to him. He says rather sarcastically to you... are you still on that trip buddy? You gove him a long stare of disbelief. Are you ok? Still trying to understand what's happening with him. Then he turns his whole body and grabs you by your shoulders, shakes you up a few times and says: wake up buddy... wake up. You can see he is not drunk, drugged, sick, didnt hurt his head. You have no idea whatsoever what the heck he is talking about. He stares into your eyes intently. Doesnt smile. You break the silence. What's going on dude, you scare me? He tells you bluntly and simply: dude, you're dead. You have been dead for the past 57 years. At first you feel nothing. The information still hasnt been taken in. What? You ask. You're dead Tom. You died.. long ago.. this world doesnt exist bro... Whaaaat? You ask... and begin to turn around to check for any proof of what might indicate to you that your besty, your closes buddy is telling you facts. But... but.... but... you begin to trip over your own arguments unable to speak. There is something in you that knows your buddy is telling you the truth that you have been oblivious of all those years. You cant believe him. You turn around and leave. But the doubt was planted. How can you tell woth 100% certainty that this world is indeed real?!! That's what i struggle with lately. I would go through these motions at random occasions. It feels as if i contracted a mental virus and now i suffer from disillusionment.. a process

Hello ”Love of music”. I have had the exact same thougts as you had or have. If you can read this we are both aware that we are alive in this world. As long as you can say the word: ”I am” you truly exists. If we thinks too much around the ”living reality” we can stuck in a beliefe that you, and I, the world, all people, the universe don’t exists... but that is only a thougt. Just be calm and feel that YOU are the one that is aware of this thought as the Buddha said: ”You become what you think, so therefore don’t think... just be. I am now a buddhist and this kind of thoughts are now gone and I stand reveiled as the ”ONE who knows, not the one that thinks that I am that the thoughts tell me”. I am a jazzmusician and a buddhist. The musician became a buddhist, but I am still a musician! Because: I still am that I AM and that is HERE and NOW and in the realm of music! Hope for a reply, because I REALLY know how this struggling felt: I am with you in this feeling// NAMASTE, Steffe 🌟🕉🎷🎸👍

... AND my reality is even more clear nowadays. I am alive and the music in me is alive, my family is the most alive and my perceptions of the world is more real than the reality itself! That spells LOVE🌟🕉🌍🎷

It seems to me as if non duality is virtually the complete reversal of atheism. As far as I am concerned, the mind can't know either way whether consciousness continues after death or not. I personally feel that it can't as by definition who you are is thoughts and sense perceptions, you couldn't be you or even aware of anything if you didn't have these things. It seems to me as if this awareness that is talked about is self-aware and doesn't need perceptions for this, but this isn't what I perceive in my experience, especially before I was even born. How can I even be aware if there is nothing to be aware of, by definition who you are and what makes you up are all of your perceptions in totall. We all have to admit this as we know we weren't self aware in nothingness for billions of years before our personnel movie or bodies appeared at a young age or birth.

This is discussed extensively in Advaita Vedanta teachings you may be interested. It says that it is only an illusion that we are seperate, and that through self effort we can merge back with consciousness and live as the all pervading consciousness, which is Satchitananda (existence, knowledge, and bliss). Which is what we all seek through any desire. Imagine feeling Love and no seperation for all of eternity with no feeling of time or thought. That is eternal brahman
