Very informative, I've indirectly noticed the relationship between objective magnification and depth of field and this confirmed my suspicion.

Thanks for posting this. From what you say, it would make a lot of sense to use a higher power eyepiece and lower power objective when viewing objects on concave slides.

Thanks for posting. Another thing that I really like about using a higher magnification eyepiece is that I can keep the objective a greater working distance away from thicker specimens. On my microscope I only have 4 objectives - 4x, 10x, 40x and 100x, and the distance from the objective to the specimen when moving from 10x to 40x is greatly reduced. More than once I have accidentally put the 40x into the gunk! Staying on the 10x but increasing the eyepiece power is a way better solution for me in this circumstance.

Is there great of a difference when using a higher magnification eyepiece instead of a high magnification objective?

I swapped my 10x for a 20x and I find myself using it waaaay more than I used the 10x. 10x was too close for scanning the slide, and too far for any close observations. I also swapped my 100x oil for a 60x dry for obvious reasons.

Interesting details on optics... Thanks!

To avoid the "reduction of light", would it be feasible to use a digital camera to zoom even further? Once digitised, You can't get any new "information" beyond what was captured, but enlarging for ease of viewing is very possible. As a person, with visual limitations, looking into a 10x eyepiece may produce less for me to see than even the limited digital information captured by the camera that I can view. Even though I've been told optical zooming is always best(and I do still believe this to a certain degree). If there is a limit to the optics and light, but a camera can pick up about 25x as much fine detail as my eye. It seems like I can effectively zoom at least 10x via a camera.

I have a question regarding sanitization of microscope during covid-19. My class consists of 40 students and we want to observe some slides under the microscope but there are only a very few microscopes available. What is the best way to use the microscope in this case? Should we sanitize with 70% ethanol after every use ?

In the last couple of years, and after a few eye surgeries, I've found that using slightly higher eyepiece magnification helps me compensate for the lower resolution of my old eyes. I rather do that then think about giving up the hobby.

I've heard not to go over 1000x. What if I have a 10x eyepiece and a 75x objective? is that any better than a 25x eyepiece and a 30x objective?

I have another question, in what case it does make sense to use a low power eyepiece (e.g. 5x) compared to normal 10x?

To get a wider field of view. You can see more of the specimen to get a better overview and orientation and sometimes you do not need a higher magnification.

Hello mister !! I'm studying biology, and have a lot of histologic aspects in my university. It interests me a lot and I would like to learn it by myself too, using a microscope, and slicing some plants to study their anatomy and learn to find some caracteristics they have. This will require for me to get a microscope. Found a lot, some which has a very impirtant magnification : 2 500 X. I'm pretty sure it'll be impossible even with this kind of microscope to study any virus : ~ 100 nm, but I'd like the higher magnification as possible to make it possible for me to study the more different species I could ! Would you have some advices to help me to find a good microscope, for a student (L2) ? Btw : sorry for my english, I'm french and try to do my best to be clear and as correct as possible in my sentences ^^'

Plant histology does not need much magnification. Maximum magnification is 1000x (100x objective and 10x eyepiece). You can get higher magnifications by changing the eyepieces (cheap, magnification is not a quality measure). Have a look at this microscope (or similar): kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIG6fo2Em56npcU

Hm, what about low power objective and digital magnification, could that be ok?

Here you might also reach the resolution limit of the camera. Depends how much you mangify.

Hi Oliver. Is the microscope camera you are using on that microscope (the one we see here in this video) is good for video recording? I want to use a similar one and record videos than edit them and display them on large 4k screen (65")
@MicrobehunterMicroscopy4 жыл бұрын
It's this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGKlf3SajdpropI The USB 2 connection is too slow to record high resolution video at a fast frame rate. For video, I would use a camera that does not rely on a USB 2 connection.

Another consequence of using 2-x or 25x eyepieces is that you have an extremely small field of view compared to 10x eyepieces. So you see a small area in poor resolution. 99% of microscope for use in a professional setting will use standard 10x eyepieces.
