The Berlin wall would become a symbol of ideological division and suppression of human rights during the Cold War.
In August 1961, the Communist government of the German Democratic Republic of East Germany began construction of the wall and placement of barbed wire between west Berlin and the East.

When the wall first went up, a Russiam soldier managed to get through it by ramming an armoured car into it. After he crashed through the wall, West Berliners dragged his unconscious body out of the vehicle, and hid him in a local bar to prevent his capture by East Berlin authorities.

My former German teacher was from East Berlin, he was a border guard directly at the Berlin wall during the early 80s when he did his conscription service. He told us in class how he escaped: He jumped down the wall when there was no other serviceman around, ran across the minefields and crossed the spring-guns to reach West Berlin, where they allowed him to leave to West Germany where he became a German teacher in a small Westphalian town until today. It's almost miraculous that he survived the incredibly dangerous death zone.

"Berliner" is ambiguous, it *can* mean a type of jelly doughnut (which, unlike the American variety, has no hole in the middle), but in context it's clear that it means "person/man from Berlin". You can also make the same joke with many toponyms (names derived from places), e.g. "Ich bin ein Neapolitaner." could be interpreted as "I am a person/man from Naples, Italy." or "I am a layered waffle with hazelnut filling.", and "Ich bin ein Hamburger." explains itself. Sometimes it is claimed that the correct way to say "I am a person/man from Berlin." was "Ich bin Berliner." (without the article). While it *would* be more *common* to say "Ich bin Berliner." in conversation, the use of the article does *not* automatically change the meaning, and is in fact entirely reasonable for emphasis. I.e. if you don't want to just convey the information but drive home a point.

I once had a discussion with an elderly German lady about the fall of the wall. She said it wasn't all jubilation afterwards. West Germans taxes went up in order to pay for the upgrading of East Germanys infrastructure, also many East Germans were so used to the gov't providing housing and employment that a lot of them began to complain. I suppose however, that it was simply growing pains.

I'm not for sure if the first video on this topic mentioned it, but an interesting fact was that East German troops were never paired up with someone they knew. The East German military always feared they might let ordinary East Germans escape or the soldiers themselves might defect. We have seen this lately with North Korean troops escaping into South Korea.

@@arawn1061 Nice try but no. Conservatives and constitutionalists have historically been some of the biggest pushers of social justice. It's the social justice that devolves into tribal identity politics and censorship that conservatives tend to associate with radical. Socialized medicine IS essentially communist. So half of your statement is untrue and the other half is justified. There would have been no reason however to associate the west with fascism at the time the Berlin wall was built. Actually fascism was a lot closer ideologically to the Soviet Union than it was to the capitalist west. The wall was built to shield East Berliners from the prosperity of the West, it had nothing to do with fascism or keeping people out in general.

There were some areas around the wall where the guards were not alerted about the change in rules, so when people started crossing the wall, the guards all started killing the civilians because they did not know that civilians could cross the wall, I just thought this was important to mention since it’s kind of interesting
@Ahhh714
@Ahhh714 6 жыл бұрын
That is probably not true since only 3 civilians died in 1989, with the last death being in March with a failed Hot airballon escape; 8 months before the fall of the wall.

Ahhh714 Im not arguing with you, but what I mentioned *did* happen, but the deaths may not have been recorded or something of the sorts, this isn’t the first time history has been scattered

Spawnpeeking Jäger Well if you're willing to cite the incidents then sure that would contradict the reported deaths of only 3 civilians in 89' with the last being 8 months before the fall of the wall. Otherwise it's an unsubstantiated claim.

Spawnpeeking Jäger Well I'm genuinely curious, but highly skeptical as I am sure an incident like that would have had massive headlines. Apparently Chris Gueffroy was the last to be killed and a street was named after him, no mention of others. Could it have been that they were shot at but not killed, even that would have made news though. But incidents of the short have been know to happen throughout history. The most famous in the US being the Battle of New Orleans where hundreds of British and American died not know the war had essentially ended a month prior.

Unlike the Berlin Wall from 1961 to 1989 in Germany was then build the Spanish Colonization in 1570s in Manila, Philippines was established the Old Walled City of Intramuros and followed them the Second World War, Allied forces liberated Manila from the Japanese on February 1945 and the walled city was destroyed due the war until the rebuild around the walls first.

Randele Alcoran Arcilla The Berlin wall and the Walled City of Intramuros are 2 different wall and different function, the BW is built to prevent East Berliners from going to West and The Walls of Intramuros have also a different purpose but not to divide a land like the BW. Just like the Great Wall of China, it was built to prevent the Mongols from invading China. The BW the wall of Intramuros and GW of C Have different Purposes.

I never saw the wall in Berlin, but as a 13 year old, I saw it as scar running through the Harz mountains. In this gorgeous land of rolling hills and pine trees, the barbed wire fence, watchtowers and a beautifully manicure lawn in no mans land, spread from the north to the southern horizon. It was chilling but even then, I knew it was an afront to civilisation! Despite being high up and looking down perhaps a mile away from the east west border, it was mesmerising and frankly sad. Far across the valley I could se the Brocken, the highest peak (in Germany I think), and beneath the once Hotel that stood there on the bleak summit, I could vaguely make out the forms of trucks of the occupying force. A strangely beautiful place with a terrible story of oppression. Some 50 years later I travelled up that berg and saw that Hotel and visited its museum and on a perfect, cloudless day, whereby I could see some 50 or so miles to the horizon, at that time I exorcised the ghosts of my youth. Lets hope for Germany to remain free, and never again be repressed by an occupying force.
