I was there in 89 working on the TV coverage of the fall of the wall. We went through Checkpoint Charlie into what was then still the DDR and started filming on the east side of the breach in the wall. A border guard was watching us. He looked about 19 and was completely out of his depth with the new situation. It was cold so I was wearing gloves, I took off my glove and offered him my hand. He hesitated and then we shook hands and he smiled. It's one of my most vivid memories of that day.

@voltagedrop5899
@voltagedrop5899 5 жыл бұрын
@Zhang Zhuisui the americans were spying on you throughout the entirety of the cold war using spy planes and satellites. the ONLY reason why the berlin wall was built was to prevent east germans from defecting to the west. "Before 1950, over 15 million immigrants emigrated from Soviet-occupied eastern European countries to the west in the five years immediately following World War II. Until the early 1950s, the lines between German occupation zones could be easily crossed. Taking advantage of this route, the number of Eastern Europeans applying for political asylum in West Germany was 197,000 in 1950, 165,000 in 1951, 182,000 in 1952 and 331,000 in 1953, One reason for the sharp 1953 increase was fear of potential further Sovietization with the increasingly paranoid actions of Joseph Stalin in late 1952 and early 1953. 226,000 had fled in just the first six months of 1953. Because of the lack of resources and space in West Germany, at the request of Truman in 1952, the United States increased its resettlement admissions quotas under the United States Escapee Program (USEP). After the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, 171,000 Hungarian refugees crossed the border into Austria, while 20,000 crossed into Yugoslavia. In 1948, in the debate of a Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Soviets objected to the language that "everyone has the right to leave any country including his own." Arguing that "it would encourage emigration", the Soviets wanted to add the phrase "in accordance with the procedure laid down in the laws of that country", with only Poland and Saudi Arabia supporting the Soviet proposal."

My former German teacher was from East Berlin, he was a border guard directly at the Berlin wall during the early 80s when he did his conscription service. He told us in class how he escaped: He jumped down the wall when there was no other serviceman around, ran across the minefields and crossed the spring-guns to reach West Berlin, where they allowed him to leave to West Germany where he became a German teacher in a small Westphalian town until today. It's almost miraculous that he survived the incredibly dangerous death zone.

Some old East German jokes (source - Wikipedia, link at the end): 1. How can you use a banana as a compass? - Place a banana on the Berlin Wall. The bitten end would point East. 2. Why do Stasi officers make such good taxi drivers? - You get in the car and they already know your name and where you live. 3. Early in the morning, Honecker arrives at his office and opens his window. He greets the Sun, saying: "Good morning, dear Sun!" - "Good morning, dear Erich!" Honecker works, and then at noon he heads to the window and says: "Good day, dear Sun!" - "Good day, dear Erich!" In the evening, Erich calls it a day, and heads once more to the window, and says: "Good evening, dear Sun!" Hearing nothing, Honecker says again: "Good evening, dear Sun! What's the matter?" The sun retorts: "Kiss my arse. I'm in the West now!" 4. Why do the Stasi work together in groups of three? - You need one who can read, one who can write, and a third to keep an eye on the two intellectuals. 5. What is the longest car on the market? - The Trabant, at 12 meters length. 2 meters of car, plus ten meters of smoke. *Source:* en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Germany_jokes

Funny but true story: my father (an American) took a train ride from West Germany that looped through East Germany and back to the West. There was a stop on the East side and the guards boarded and checked papers. My dad asked one of the higher up German officers if he could take a picture of this church or cathedral. The officer said yes, and my dad got out his camera. As he was taking the picture a west German guard ripped the camera out of his hands and pointed his AK at my dad and screamed in English “cameras are forbidden, you are in trouble”. The guard went to the officer and showed him the camera and told him what happened. Unfortunately for the guard, my Dad was fluent in German and had spoken in German to the officer, so he heard every word of the conversation. The guard basically got chewed out by the officer who told him “yeah I specifically gave him permission to take the picture. You’re overreacting. Give him his camera back”. So the guard comes back and says “I will forgive you this time, but next time you will be arrested and imprisoned.” My dad was like yeah whatever lol I speak German and I heard what your boss said 😂😂

I am an American that grew up in Berlin. There used to be platforms on the West side, adjacent to the towers. We would climb the platforms and throw trade goods... us cigarettes, playboy magazines, budweiser (us),etc. Nearly always got DDR or Soviet stuff back. If we got nothing (true believer on site), then we'd leave, and come back in a few days. I was mid teens, say 14 to 17. The guards might have been a bit older. Mayhap 18 to 25. Got lots of cool stuff. Always wanted to hang out with one of them since stuff has now changed. Zehlendorf 1984-1988

Funny story from a former M60A1 gunner I know. During an equipment check which involved loading a piece of ammunition, the main gun fired... right into East Germany. The commotion stirred led to a lot of the officers of both sides arguing with no real consequences. Eventually both sides left it alone since it just launched into a random hill far away from any people or emplacements.

The RPGs were for special use. They did not carry them on patrol. They were stored in the armories. Typically they would be used for either an attack from the west, or in cases of advanced escapes from the East. Such as using armored vehicles.

East Germany did not issue a bakelite mag for the 7.62x39mm MpiKm, it was standard for the MpiKm 74 which started being issued in the mid 80s but was not widely issued as training ammunition was scarce. It is basically seen in a few photos and one or two training videos. The stahlhelm stopped being worn with the dress uniform sometime in the 60s at the border as the field uniform changed to strichtarn camo and the stahlem or overseas cap would be worn with this. In the dress uniform the visor cap would be worn.

In 1968 2 Grunztruppen defected to the US sector...1 was in his early 20s married with a child in the East...the other single and a bit older in his late 20s. After arriving the first night they asked to see the Kufursentendam the following evening. Both impressed they were debriefed and sent to another group to be debriefed further. The younger I called youngee ( gave me his boots as a souvenir) and the other Lange. Lange was resettled in FRG with a stipend and the younger decided to go back to the East and face the consequences. I still can't figure out which one was the Stasi.

Actually, they'll sometimes try and grab/kidnap South Korean guards, at least they use too.

Matthew Mulcahy isn’t that something? A communist dictatorship that’s claims to be a democratic republic.

When I was in JROTC, our Sergeant told us he was there when the wall fell. He was in a tank manning the 50. He said he nearly pissed his pants when the wall went down and he was just waiting for the order to open fire, because he was staring at east German soldiers armed on the other side pointing their guns at him lol.
