I said it before and I'll say it again. To my Bernardo is just the nice guy that teaches me new moves. I often forget he's a world champion multiple times over

Huge honor to introduce Bernardo to those who might have been missing on the most passionate student of BJJ. This man is able to listen to a Master teaching a position like he never seen it before and then go "wow that's incredible" when he sees a detail that is new.

Bernardo's system literally carry me all the way from white belt all the way to purple, actually, my first class, Bernardo was at the gym where I started training (I didn't even know who he was), he spend a week over there, and then the coaches really focused on working what he showed during that week, so those were the first techniques i got exposed to! That was really cool!!!

Great video man! Over under passing, while not generally my thing, has really gone under the radar for a while now. I remember everyone doing it when I started seven years ago and now I have to defend it once a month maybe. Still a very good pass to combat tricky guards though!

Thanks for watching! And yeah, not my go to style either but the few people I know who are very good at it are absolute nightmares to roll with.

This half guard and deep half guard just feel super comfortable for me. Found myself doing it naturally within my first couple weeks of training without anybody really showing it to me. It piggybacked well off of my wrestling background and getting Bernardo’s instructional took me to the next level. Nobody at my academy really plays out of half guard. So it’s kind of funny it has become a centerpiece of my game as it develops.

Half guard is usually the first guard I teach wrestlers. There's so much that almost translates directly, from underhook/overhooks to arm drags, there's a lot there that's super familiar for wrestlers. Thanks for watching!

Awesome video. Bernardo is amazing. Half guard in general is hard on your neck/c-spine. Sure there is all kinds of things you can do to try to minimize that but most half guard players I know have chronic neck problems. I have significant cauliflower ear and most of it came from half guard and I’m not even a half guard player. That being said even if you don’t adopt half guard as your “A” game it’s still an almost ubiquitous position you will find yourself in weather you want to play it or not. a big factor is the ease of entering half guard. It might be the easiest guard to reliably enter. It’s also fairly easy to force your opponent to play half guard. A down side is there are some basic things you have to stay disciplined with like head position, staying on your side while being pressured and keeping your opponents weight controlled. If your focus on any of these lapses your opponent can capitalize quickly because there is reduced ability to frame or scramble from half guard as compared to many other guards. I think half guard is a great guard that can be used to great effect but I don’t think it is the answer for everyone in every context. There are obviously great examples of half guard specialists that did an amazing job in competition. There are also players that made careers out of decimating many half guard players like Rodolfo Vieira. There are just so many great options in Jiu Jitsu.

Thank you! Yeah, I think it’s a harder position to use offensively in this era of jiu jitsu, but like you said, you’ll inevitably find yourself there at some point and I think it’s one everyone should know, even if you never intend to use it much. I always tell my students, “if you ever see me playing half guard, something is going really wrong in my match” for me, its not my go to but it’s a good damage control guard.

Great video! I love all the small details. What's the reason for holding the pants instead of the belt or lapel at 11:40? Isn't it easier to hold the opponent's leg tightly that way?
@grapplingwithjiujitsu4 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! You don’t necessarily need the grip but it’s important to keep the arm tight around their leg (if there’s space there, the person on bottom will often underhook or try to kimura that arm) and getting that deep grip on the pants just kind of forces it to be flush.
