Hi Brandon, you have no idea how happy this makes me, my favourite author discussing my favourite director.. I am currently working as a writer in the same film industry that is tollywood or Telugu film industry, (for the past 5 months, i am still new to this)... The thing is i wanted to be a filmmaker by seeing ss. Rajamouli films , when i applied for the writer position, your free lectures helped me a lot, in fact in my application i have used your name and robert Jordan as my writing inspiration.. As you guys are master at world building, cultures and magic systems... I think that caught my director's eye......... Even though you don't know me, i will be forever thankful to you.. Thank you Brandon (English is not my first language 🙃)

19:21 The point of the bullet speech (hilariously, he uses the speech twice in the film in two different time periods and the value is adjusted for inflation) is to drive home that Indian people are severely dehumanized by the British colonizers that they could put a price on an Indian life (combined with the beginning scene of the governor buying the little girl), but also that they are so pitiful they can't even be considered on the same level as an enemy combatant (not deserving the privilege of being shot). Thus the main drive of the film is the two heroes proving him wrong, by arming and inspiring people to rise up against the British government. The counter by Ram's father: "He said that an Indian's Life is not worth a bullet. So how will this bullet earn its value? When it comes out of your gun and pierces an Englishman's heart." Ram's mission was to arm every Indian fighter with British guns, and him killing the Governor with one of those bullets is him both achieving his goal and fulfilling his father's will.

I watched RRR with my parents when it came out, as well as Rajamouli's previous Baahubali movies when they came out in theaters. I remember enjoying the first Baahubali movie but thought the second was just okay. I watched Baahabuli over the weekend and... it was nowhere near as good as RRR, in my opinion. The discussion on how to do fight scenes actually applies pretty well: the good fight scenes are showing off something interesting about the characters, but the bad ones are just kinda there because it's fight o'clock. Regarding RRR itself: - I think Brandon focused too much on Ram for the torture scene. Like, it's all well and good to thoughtlessly repeat the truism that torture doesn't get you correct information ... but the truth is that the point of most torture isn't information extraction. It's sadistic pleasure. The point is not to get them to talk. The talking is just a capstone of humiliation. The point is the humiliation and the pain. And torture does a very fine job at achieving that goal. - What I'd hoped Dan would discuss was that Bheem's romantic persona seems to be an Indian trope. I don't know enough about it, but Bahabuli also uses it, so it's either a trope or one of Prasad's (the writer of both) habits and I'm betting it's more general than just the one guy.
