Our brand new Super Split HD log splitter has one shortcoming - it does not have the option for an integrated hydraulic log lift. There are some very innovative solutions out there, but for us, the Side Tool was the best option to save time, improve efficiency, and most importantly, save our backs!!
In the firewood business, down time due to injury is a killer. We looked at a lot of options before settling on this one-of-a-kind excavator attachment that will quickly split huge rounds into manageable-sized pieces.
Do you avoid large firewood rounds because of the difficulty associated with moving them around the woodyard, trying to lift them onto your log splitter deck, or having to manually break them down with a splitting maul into reasonable chunks? In this video, we'll show you just how easy and PAINLESS it can be to avoid all those headaches.
We're happy with the Side Tool log splitter, and hope to demonstrate just how effective it is - we count ourselves lucky to have it on our team! :) Now the Super Split HD will keep slinging firewood instead of sitting idle while we wrestle the round into place.

Thank you. It has been a lifesaver. :) I've started splitting the wood directly into a trailer, which I can then pull from and finish it up on the SuperSplit HD. Works like a charm.

You are wise to save your back. I used to be a weight lifter. So I lifted those heavy rounds onto my SuperSplit for 45 years. Ñow the only thing my back is good for is hurting. Stay safe. Shalom/gw

Thank you. Back injuries affect even the most mundane activities, right? I work full time in the fire service, so I’ve seen a back injury or ten (patients and co-workers). I haven’t been able to dodge the bullet entirely, but I certainly want to do my best to avoid the “big one.” :) Thanks for watching, and have a great week!

Another option: Noodle large rounds with a chain saw.

Thanks, Tim! It certainly has done the trick thus far. :) I just have to keep reminding myself that I don’t need to keep splitting the rounds into smaller and smaller pieces - I just need them light enough to put on the Super Split. Lol. It’s just so much fun!

LOL! I would too! Those are some sweet machines. They would be wasted on me and my small operation - but I'm still jealous... hahaha. Cheers!

I looked it up. You're right - it is basically the exact same thing. I like the hooks he put on the back of his blade that allow him to reach out and flip the round over - the wedge on mine isn't wide enough for me to add anything like that, but it sure looks handy. Thanks for tip... I loved watching his video - he did a great job!

It takes a LOT of DIY firewood to offset that $2k investment; nevertheless, a brilliant tool to multiply human energy!

You are right! It is a nice tool to have though - it almost makes me forget how much it cost when it does the heavy lifting for me. :) I know it's not for everyone - heck, there are some days that I just want to get out there and swing away. That's the joy of firewood!

I'm still paying off my supersplit...never mind having enough money to buy a $2000 attachment and mini excavator. Sorry..was hoping you'd have a better cheaper idea. Thanks anyways though

I get it. I wish there was a cheaper solution. I really wish the SuperSplit had a log lift option. I've only seen one video where an owner modified his SS and added an electric lift- but because I don't weld, and it seemed so slow, it wasn't the solution I needed. Best of luck to you!! Thanks for watching.

Great tool. How much does it cost? I just notch the round with my saw and drive a wedge through it to make a manageable size. A wedge and my fiskars maul cost under $100. Plus no diesel required. And if I don’t want to split the rounds in half w/ a wedge, you can always noodle them.

We've really enjoyed it. It cost about $2,000. There are certainly cheaper ways to accomplish the same thing. Manually splitting rounds is good, honest work... I am sure I will continue to do my fair share. :) This was just the next evolution in our little operation. Thanks for watching!

Can you post a link to the attachment you bought for your excavator? I’ve got a backhoe with a thumb on it that I could mount the attachment.Thanks- Will

The website is SideTool.com. They will request some information from you, like the make and model of your excavator, and some measurements of the thumb and pin. The process is pretty straightforward, and I've gotten a lot of use out of mine - it makes it so easy. :) Thanks for watching!

use a tractor for the lifting
@coyote12workshop
@coyote12workshop Жыл бұрын
That would work as well - I just don't happen to have one. As it stands, I use the excavator and side tool to split directly into a dump trailer, and then transfer the wood from there over to the Super Split. Almost no manual lifting at all - it is great. Thanks for watching!

Just use a/your tractor. Nothing else to do but work.
@coyote12workshop
@coyote12workshop Жыл бұрын
Certainly an option to use the bucket of a tractor as a hydraulic lift, for sure. However, there is a lot of time and energy spent loading the rounds into the bucket, which is okay, but not as efficient as I’d like. This has been a lot of trial and error, so I’m just trying to share a little of how I’ve chosen to do it - there’s a thousand ways to skin a cat, right? :) My next video will show how the Side Tool splitter on the excavator can be used to lift big rounds and split them directly into a dump trailer. The wood is taken directly from the trailer onto the Super Split for processing. It saves time and avoids lots of lifting. Hopefully I can make it worth watching. Haha. Thanks for commenting!

Log lifting rounds gives me my exercise and keeps my bank account full than buying machines. If you can afford many tens of thousands dollars in machinery to just chop firewood. You can just buy your firewood or other heat sources.

Thanks for sharing. For my part, I’d encourage you to get an excavator! :) Spending money on a machine doesn’t mean you’ve emptied your bank account - buy a used one, split a thousand cord, and sell it for what you bought it for (plus all the revenue from the additional firewood you can sell). It’s a tool like any other. You’ll actually come out ahead. Have a good one! 👍🏻

VERY USEFUL INFORMATION! I’m going out right now and buy a $50,000 excavator… to save my back. Incidentally, if you’ve got the excavator, why even have a Super Split?
@coyote12workshop
@coyote12workshop Жыл бұрын
The answer to your question is: Speed. The Super Split is way faster than the excavator and you can control the size of your firewood. The excavator attachment just makes the wood manageable. As for the price of the excavator (which is just a tool) - well, I’d encourage you to find a way to buy one if you spend any amount of time processing wood. The best part is, it does more than just split wood! :) There are a lot of firewood-specific setups out there that are way more expensive, so really it is a bargain. If you aren’t worried about your back, or efficiency, or time, then there is no need. But when you’re ready, you know what the solution is… :) Thanks for watching!
