NEW BOUNDO RAHHH Edit: seeing the Jordaan Mason pick reminds me of their song from 2022, “No More Metaphor” . While the album it’s from isn’t that remarkable, that song is a goddamn masterpiece and one of the best songs of the decade so far. PLEASE listen if you haven’t already.

2003 was a banger year for music. On top of what you listed, it also had career highlights from Saturday Looks Good To Me in All Your Summer Songs, M Ward in The Transfiguration of Vincent, Ted Leo in Hearts of Oak, The Wrens in The Meadowlands, The Exploding Hearts in Guitar Romantic, and Unicorns in Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone. All absolute gems of albums.

Only 7 minutes into this (I am watching this in full, of course, I just want to bring these up before forgetting) but I’m gonna bring up my AOTY from when I was born, ‘til now, why I chose them, a few shout-outs to other records, and all that Jazz :3 2006: Breaking Benjamin’s “Phobia” This was my favorite album as a child who was just getting into music, and I still cherish the record and adore every track. It has sentimental value due to personal reasons and that’s probably the main reason I would consider it the best of 2006. I would like to shout out Sibylle Baier’s “Color Green.” Despite being recorded in the 70s, lol. I discovered it a few months ago, and have given it tons of listens, especially during nighttime walks :) 2007: AJJ’s “People Who Can Eat People…” Been almost a year since I first heard this, and I would consider this record the reason I got into more acoustic-sounding music. I’ve always been huge on Extreme Metal, and Raw, Grungy Rock, so this was a nice change of scenery without the drastic tonal shift as it’s ecstatic, intense, and very powerful lyrically. So many other greats from this year, too. “In Rainbows,” BTBAM’s “Colors,” AnCo’s “Strawberry Jam,” Midori, Dillinger Escape Plan, Bon Iver, I could go on and on. 2008: Have a Nice Life’s “Deathconsciousness” Very basic choice, but c’mon… This record is a journey! I remember my first listen to this very vividly as I was at a low point and was skipping classes to give this a listen as I didn’t have time in the day for the record, and I wanted to hear it badly. I cranked my volume up to 50 during the last few songs to drown out everything else, and “Earthmover” had me drowning in sound. Amazing shit ^^ Also love Mount Eerie’s “Dawn,” “Lost Wisdom,” and Edward Bostitch’s “Bathroom Tapes” too :3 2009: MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS’ “World Is Yours” Very short, but it packs a heavy punch that’ll sustain on you despite its runtime. Was one of the very first J-Rock records I got into, and will be one I’ll remember forever. Also from this year is Chevelle’s “Sci-Fi Crimes,” and Phoenix’s “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” 2010: Nails’ “Unsilent Death” Now, here’s a record that’s shrivels you up into shredded pieces at twice the speed! This was one of the first records that got me into Extreme Metal, more specifically, Grindcore, and it’s sub-genres. Grind and Grind-related music would become my main focus for a long while, and it’s all thanks to this 14 minute magnum opus in Nails’ discography. Also would like to shout BLA’s “We Just Got Back From the Discomfort-We’re Alright,” Daughters’ S/T, and Chuck Person’s “Eccojams.” 2011: Car Seat Headrest’s “Twin Fantasy” This is an artist that I’m sure will pop up on here more. Car Seat Headrest is my favorite music, period. I adore everything Will Toledo has created, and his music means the world and a half to me. Very top-notch nervous young gay furry shit ^^ Would also shout out Death Grips’ “Exmilitary,” La Dispute’s “Wildfire,” and Giles Corey’s S/T :3 2012: Car Seat Headrest’s “Monomania” Told ya so :3 I love this even more than “Twin Fantasy” as it’s showing Will in a less flattering, and more grief-filled light as this is, in my opinion, THE definitive breakup album. I could go on forever if I wanted to, but I’m tired, lol. Also love “Money Store,” “Living While Starving,” and Teen Suicide’s “Waste Yrself” 2013: Car Seat Headrest’s “Nervous Young Man” I have a problem… Anyways, this is my favorite album ever, and will be the album that I feel best relates to my own personal being. He just like me fr fr. Also would like to mention BMTH’s “Sempiternal,” Giles Corey’s “Hinterkaifect,” and TDEP’s “One of Us is the Killer.” 2014: Car Seat Headrest’s “How to Leave Town” T-T I’m not even gonna say anything about the record besides that it’s a masterpiece and the best record to Drive to, late at night. Anyways, I also like Chevelle’s “La Gárgola,” RTJ2, and 10,000 Kittens’ S/T. 2015: Sufjan Steven’s “Carrie & Lowell” I don’t even know what to say. The record CAN speak for itself, but it might need deciphering with its very powerful and meaningful lyricism and execution that feels so vulnerable and heart-aching. I also like Goolagoon’s “Patrickviolence Demo,” Jeff Rosenstock’s “We Cool?,” and Kuroi Jukai’s S/T from this year. 2016: Car Seat Headrest’s “Teens of Denial” While most records from this once solo, now formed band have left me feeling completely picked apart and dissected emotionally, this is one of their records that do that, but isn’t the main dish, if that makes sense. I feel as this focuses more on its sound. Not saying there other records don’t, as that would be complete bullshit, but something about the sound of this record feels completely different, while at the same time, is their signature sound. It’s very punchy, but has its signature somber that I love from them. Anyways, my other favs from this year include Rosenstock’s “Worry,” Danny Brown’s “Atrocity Exhibition,” and the Nails / Full of Hell split. 2017: Mount Eerie’s “A Crow Looked at Me” This could’ve gone to a few others, but I feel as this deserves the placement as it is, by far, the most emotionally draining record I’ve heard from music as of yet. You’re really put in Phil Elverum’s shoes as he goes about his life after dealing with a tragic loss. I have no words that can do this album justice. The others that could’ve been placed as my favorite would be Archspire’s “Relentless Mutation,” Incendiary’s “Thousand Mile Stare,” and Echelons’ “The Morning Sun and the End of the World,” 2018: Idles’ “Joy as an Act of Resistance” AHHHH!!! This record makes me want to break shit, piss on a government building, be sad for a bit- THEN SCREAM AGAIN AHHHHH!!!! Extremely unique, bone-chilling, AND bone-breaking at the same time >w< More favs from this year would be Daughters’ “YWGWWY,” CSH’s “Twin Fantasy (FtF),” Earl’s “Some Rap Songs,” Euclid C Finder’s S/T tagged along with their debut EP, and Anna von Hausswolf’s triumphant piece. 2019: 100 gec’s “10,000 gecs” This was the record to get me to listen to shit outside of my Metal/Rock comfort zone. This group is always an outlier when looking at my favorite artist solely on how different their music sounds compared to my favorites. They’re wacky, hard-hitting, and sometimes emotionally compelling in a way that tickles the itch in my brain the right way. Very short record as well, which lead to me giving this hundreds of listens, which is a reason I adore this band so much, and that’s for their replay-ability. Enough said, my other favs would have to be Weatherday’s “Come In,” Lingua Ignota’s “CALIGULA,” and The Callous Daoboys’ “Die on Mars.” Also, this was the year I started getting into music besides the CDs my Dad would play for me in his truck. I made an RYM account this year and probably the year my interest took a massive shift from sports, and video-games, to music, film, and reading.

2020: Guitar Fight from Fooly Cooly’s “Soak” This record is one I would consider to be a very underlooked gem. Not much-so in the 5th-wave Emo scene, but in the music-scene as a whole. This was a record that clicked with me in the first 5 SECONDS of listening to. I formed a bond with “Soak” and this band as a whole due to hearing it shortly after it released, and seeing it blow up in the music-sphere that it surrounded itself in real time. I felt special because of it, and even today, the sound never gets old for me. It’s a Bandcamp masterpiece :3 Other notable records for me would be Holy Grinder’s “Divine Extinction,” life’s “demo three,” and Raccoon Tour’s “Sofarinrunning” EP. 2021: Black Country, New Road’s “For the First Time” This was the year that I was REALLY invested into music as this was around the time I sunk more of my free-time into music, then other hobbies I was into. This record definitely had a hand in that when it released. Absolutely stunning work, especially with its instrumentation. I love Isaac’s vocals and odd delivery with his incredibly distinctive lyricism. This record fucks hard UwU More favs from this year include Knocked Loose’s “ATITFOL,” Home is Where’s “i became birds,” “SINNER GET READY,” Porter Robinson’s “Nurture” and plenty more I can’t think of at the moment x_x 2022: Weatherday & Asian Glow’s “Weatherglow” This is the perfect record for a walk around your city in the middle of the night. 2022 was the year music my only passion (then came film, and books, but I’m not talking about that). I made my still-active AOTY account (RYM frustrated me lol) and I am so glad to’ve moved over as I have made some incredible friends that I cherish so much during 2022, to now. Anyways, this record didn’t resonate much with me at first. I liked a bit of it, but that was it. It came out a week after I made my account, and that’s when I gave it a listen. “Weatherglow” was also my introduction to Asian Glow and Sputnik’s work, which I am grateful for. I did, however, totally forgot about the record, and didn’t come across it again until May. I then gave it a second-go, and it all came tumbling down on me, and I gracefully accepted this fate. I am still mind-blown by have versatile and compelling this record is. I would easily put this in my top 10 favorite records ever, it’s that good. My other favorites would be BN,CR’s “AFUT,” The Callous Daoboys’ “Celebrity Therapist,” and Chat Pile’s “God’s Country.” 2023: 100 gec’s “100,000 gecs” For how recent this record is, it shot up to being one of my favorite records ever! I wouldn’t put this over “10,000 gecs” as that record has more of a chokehold on me and is a record I simply like more, but that shouldn’t underestimate how amazing there second LP is. I listened to this as soon as I woke up. I listened to the singles when they came out, and wasn’t too crazy on them (I wasn’t too huge on gecs as I am now), but when “Hollywood Baby” released, I was playing it over, and over, and over, and over again. It still has that punch that hit just as hard as it did on first listen. Then the album came out, and it all combined together so well. The songs slap so hard as their own works, but the record as a whole is the best way to experience these tracks imo. I would even consider this to be a better cohesive work than their debut. Anyways, my other favorites would be femtanyl’s “CHASER,” Pent Up Pup’s S/T, Kristin Hayter’s “SAVED!,” and GFx3C’s “Drought.” 2024: Holy Grinder’s “10 DESECRATIONS” To be honest, I haven’t been crazy about this year. There are only three records I gave a 60+ so far, with over 150 records listened from 2024 so far. It could just be me, but I feel incredibly underwhelmed and quite disappointed by the lack of records I find enjoyable. This record is great, though! 13 minutes of a brutal Noisecore beatdown that’ll have you starting it over again when it finishes. I listened to this a little later than a week after it came out, and I adore it so much >w< My other favorites so-far would be Knocked Loose’s “YWGBYST,” and flowersfightforsunshine’s S/T. So yeah, those are my AOTY’s from 2006, to now. It took me two hours to write this, so please give me attention >~< I watched alongside of me typing this, and I love your choices as they’re very unique, as well as you explaining your choices very well. I love watching your content and this is no exception! Happy birthday btw!!! I hope it’s a great one!

Also tried to avoid giving every year to Beck and Modest Mouse, and there is a severe lack of John Frusciante solo albums, those are by far my top 3 most listened to artists. HB

You're such an inspiration to me as a fellow trans music obsessive. Your videos are some of the most well-arranged collections of music takes on KZbin, and the breadth of knowledge you have about so many styles and genres is just so wildly impressive. Happy birthday. I don't really focus on a lot of modern stuff at the moment, but here's my list regardless: 2006 - Tim Hecker - Harmony In Ultraviolet 2007 - LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver 2008 - Have A Nice Life - Deathconsciousness 2009 - Sweet Trip - You Will Never Know Why (I need to hear more from this year) 2010 - Gorillaz - Plastic Beach 2011 - The Beach Boys - The Smile Sessions 2012 - n/a [nothing I've really heard from this year sticks out as particularly noteworthy yet] 2013 - Devon Hendryx - THE GHOST~POP TAPE 2014 - Sun Kil Moon - Benji 2015 - Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly 2016 - David Bowie - Blackstar 2017 - Father John Misty - Pure Comedy 2018 - n/a [same as 2012] 2019 - Purple Mountains - Purple Mountains 2020 - The Strokes - The New Abnormal 2021 - Black Country, New Road - For the first time 2022 - Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There 2023 - Swans - The Beggar 2024 - Beth Gibbons - Lives Outgrown (so far)

Great video! So glad I stumbled upon this channel. Just a question: at one point during the gorguts review, you mention that you don’t really listen to music alone all that often. This has me a bit curious. In what context is it then that you would most likely listen to an album?
@itsboundo.6 ай бұрын
These days it's mostly with my partner! To their credit, they are very open minded to a lot of more extreme music, especially in terms of like industrial and noisy stuff, but metal is a genre that they tolerate more than love, so I don't overdo it lol
