This video is to show off the very best Amiga games by year as chosen by LemonAmiga users. Are their choices correct? I suppose that's very subjective. I agree with some, not necesarily with others. But all games are really interesting. Also bonus honorable mentions entries at the "end" for each year. This video took over 50 hours to make, and is technially speaking probably the best I've made, so I really hope that you'll like it!
I make those videos in my spare time, so if you like what I do here and feel generous, you can donate via PayPal, support me on Patreon or become a KZbin member. You don't have to though, if you can't or don't feel like it. A like and subscribe is great too!

@@OldAndNewVideoGames I've had a few replays of it over the last decade and had a great time all over again. Back in the day I was obsessed with it and played it regularly for years; I think the first time I saw it may have been while browsing in a game shop down south while visiting a relative, and I eagerly spent my pocket money on it. The box art was thrilling and the screenshots on the back had my mouth watering. I read the manual on the journey back up north to our home and couldn't wait to play it. It was one of the best games I ever played on the Amiga and still stands up today as a fun game.

@@OldAndNewVideoGames Yeah, I get that. I never owned an Amiga growing up, but my dad had a 286 because of his job (which later got exchanged for a 386, a 486 and then a pentium) that I sometimes could use for playing games (we also had a Nintendo 8 bit). My best friend had an A500 though and I LOVED playing Pirates on it. So I saved enough money to buy the game on PC and....geez...that EGA graphics and PC speaker sound compared to what I'd experienced on the Amiga was horrible. I still played the hell out of it on PC, but it really couldn't compare to the Amiga version. So, sort of the reverse of your experience! ;-)

I think the honourable mentions of 1991 show it was a massive year for the Amiga, so many great games there! And the year of the Cartoon Classics Amiga 500 pack, one of the most well loved Amiga packs. '88 seems to have been the year when the software scene was hotting up on the Amiga, and things only got better from there for about 5 years. I'm not sure if I missed it in your list of honourable mentions but I don't think you noted Kick Off, which was a milestone in computer/video football games and I think one of the games which boosted the popularity of the Amiga.

I think Amiga peaked around 93, and from then onward while it still received decent games, they were not "the best" versions of them anymore. Also, in the late 80s, it had no competition at all. PC was just too far behind. :) Yeah, Kick Off's not there. Sorry.

Defender of the Crown is so impressive. I know the Amiga version wasn’t the best but it was still impressive. Honestly I didn’t enjoy the home releases of Marble Madness nearly as much as the arcade game because that had a track ball to play with. The Guild of Thieves is new to me too but we agree on text parsers so I don’t feel I missed much. I played Déjà Vu on the Gameboy Color of all platforms! Still got the cartridge, it was surprisingly good. Dungeon Master was very impressive for the time but did’t really hit with me, it was too slow paced but I recognise it for what it was. Also how did it beat the Amiga release of Bubble Bobble? How I ask you, how?! Never mind Elite & Great Giana Sisters? Giana Sisters got blocked by Nintendo… & every Amiga owner played it. So that worked well. It Came From the Desert was fantastic, even with the difficulty. I have no idea why it’s never had a remake or even a SBIG movie? Maniac Mansion is something everyone should play, even if you have no nostalgia for old systems. Speedball 2 really deserves it’s place here, especially multiplayer. Friendships could be challenged by an extended play session though. 😄 Cracking list of other games from the same year though. Secret of Monkey Island was incredible when it released & frankly still is. If you care about the history of games it’s one you must play & the Amiga version was fantastic. Formula 1 Grand Prix is so impressive & Another World was peerless in it’s day. Monkey Island 2 was a fantastic followup to the original… right up to an ending I hated. Flashback is excellent & I have it on multiple platforms & yeh, Pinball Fantasies is hands down the best 2D pinball. Dune II is an important part of gaming history & I never got in to it, even in it’s day. Come on, how is Frontier not the top game here? Cannon Fodder is fantastic, as is lost Vikings & Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis is the best of a great series. Super Frog rocks too. Sensible World of Soccer is impressive but… meh. Benefactor is a must play if you never have & honestly so is Dreamweb. Ruff & Tumble is a true hidden gem that should be better known. UFO: Enemy Unknown is a masterpiece. I’m not big on this kind of game & I love it. Hows that for an endorsement? Alien Breed 3D really showed what the Amiga could do & should have helped to keep the platform going. Worms is a multiplayer masterpiece. Even though I love my video pinball games I never played Slam Tilt because I’d moved on to PC & PSX at this point but with modern options to play I’ll be downloading it. Gloom Deluxe is great & should be better remembered. Wow I’ve rambled on here, sorry but what an interesting list, thanks. Also thanks for Omen Exito, it’s interesting.

Defender of the Crown was an Amiga game. But it was rushed. So it was missing some small things here and there. It could be argued that all of them put together made a difference but it's irrelevant today. But presentation-wise (so graphics and sound/music) it was heaps ahead of any other system at the time. :) Yeah Giana released in the interesting times. Cause while it only stayed for few months on the shelves, it populated diskettes swapped between the gamers for years. :) Or also for few months, cause whomever got it, never overwrote it. OMG YES! YES! It Came from the Desert b-movie would be fantastic! Something in the vein of "They Live" or "Killer Tomatoes" or "Sharknado". Something so bad, it would become an instant cult classic. I'd go to see that. Yeah, Formula 1 GP on Amiga shouldn't exist. I mean it does, and it's great, but it was such an advanced title that I would imagine that it would required something like a beefy 386 or 486 to pull off. And yet, it was on the Amiga. I sense a little bit less there for Superfrog, am I right? I mean it's there, but bit less than for the rest? Not judging, just curious. Oh, yeah, and there'll be two pinball games in the next video. :) I should hopefully have it out for you tomorrow evening, and for YT on Tuesday. If not then a day later. But tomorrow seems feasible as I've already recorded voice overs for it today and it's an episode for one of my series and not a "Best" video that takes a while to produce. :)

12:04 Me and my pal wold play Speedball 2 just to hear that crowd shout XD Pity I was literally the worst at the game. My blind, dead granma would beat me, even now. Golden axe was my 2nd favourite arcade game (in order: Double Dragon, Golden Axe and Robocop). I could complete the first two on one coin, the latter however, I never completed.. I was never that rich... hell, Im still not that rich ;) Wait... Wings of Fury was like jetstrike (one of my favourite amiga games)? I honestly never played it because I thought it was a 3D flight sim. What even is my life? It's all been a lie! XD Lotus 1 and Pinball Fantasies/Illusions were the most played games on my amiga. There was a 90% chance of walking in on me playing one of the three. When friends came over it would be Arcade Pool and Champ Man Italia.
@OldAndNewVideoGames
@OldAndNewVideoGames 5 ай бұрын
I understand the popularity of Double Dragon, but I never got into it myself. Never loved them as much as the others did. And I suppose it's cause the first time I played a beat'em up, much newer and better looking titles were available. So, I had no melancholy for it. I think... Golden Axe was fire though! Wings of Fury was excellent. But I preferred Jetstrike to it cause it was more varied in its missions design and tons of different crafts, while Wings of Fury only had one. But, it was an incredible game nonetheless. Pinball Fantasies was a solid 60% for me. But when we played with friends, with more than 3 of us, it was either it, or Arcade Pool, Scorched/Worms, Moonstone or Kingpin Bowling. Very rarely something else. Well, unless we played a single player game to complete it, alternating swapping on life loss or level completion.

Not only the music, the whole game was properly ported to the Amiga, including the graphics and the game engine. When Sierra ported their games, they just copied over the EGA palette and the games were so poorly optimized that having a couple of moving items on the screen would visibly slow down the whole game.

Speedball II - The computer cheats. The computer is always in control of its players, and when your men are off the screen, they're controlled by the computer as well. When the computer grabs the ball and lobs it down the field, one of his men is always in position to catch it. When YOU throw the ball down the field and it comes down, all of your guys are off in the edges of the screen, twiddling their thumbs. In other words, the computer never moves one of your men into position to catch the ball, like it does for its own men. If that isn't cheating, what is it? I mean, there's no way that you can move your guys into position while they're off the screen and you don't get control of any of them until the screen scrolls to show them, as the ball is already coming down. And by the time you move one of your guys to grab the ball, one of his guys is there to knock you over and steal it. Also, trying to use the bonus multipliers on the sides of the field is pointless since the computer will ALWAYS throw it right back around. Frontier - I found this to be an amazing tech demo, but a lousy game. Since it simulates realistic travel time between planets, (excluding hyperspace), you need to use time acceleration to get anywhere without it taking literal days. You also need to accelerate to about 1,000,000,000 KPH. This takes several (accelerated) hours to reach, but when you encounter an enemy, it drops you back to real time, but you're still traveling at 1,000,000,000 KPH. Meaning that while you can turn and slightly adjust your trajectory, you can't actually maneuver. Think of it this way: You jump out of a plane without a parachute. You can turn and somewhat alter your course by tilting your body, but you can't just stop, or reverse course and go back up. No matter what you do, you're still going to be falling toward the ground at high speed. It's the same in Frontier, only instead of falling, you're flying in a given direction at high speed. Sure you could decelerate, but it would take you hours of real time to do it. All of which turns combat into a jousting match where you rarely even get to see the other ship up close. Gone are the fun dogfights from Elite. Then there are the bugs. Almost every session with Frontier ended in a crash for me. You could crash the game simply by trying to get info on some star systems. And because of the realistic motion of the planets, most people needed to use the auto-pilot to get anywhere, but the auto-pilot was prone to crashing you into planets. And why is it that the auto-pilot can instantly decelerate your ship when it reaches the destination, but you can't do that for combat?

Speedball II cheats, sure. But that's what the game designers have been doing for years. I mean even Civilization in its latest iterations does that. So, 5 and 6. When you go over King I believe in the difficulty level, and King is incredibly easy I must add, the AI gets not only bonuses to yields and smaller penalties for all the mistakes, but also extra units at start. Mortal Kombat II cheated even in the arcades, not to mention home versions. It's inevitable that sometimes, when devs don't know how to program a well working AI, they will resort to cheating. Regarding Frontier I can't agree with you. I mean I can but I won't. ;) I get the issues, bugs and occasional crashes (though my time spent playing it on PC vs Amiga was probably 10 to 1) but I wasn't playing it for the realism, I was playing it for the grand space adventure that was so open, that I had to create it all on my own. It was a sandbox supreme, where you could literally sink in and just "live" doing whatever you felt doing. Within the confines of what game allows for. For me, it was a fundamental game for others to come and easily hundreds of hours of fun. Maybe more. Still, the fact that I don't agree, doesn't mean that I don't see your point and technical limitations of it. :)

@@OldAndNewVideoGames I always get disappointed when a programmer allows the AI to cheat. For example in Archon II, the wraith is invisible in 2-player, except when attacking, but visible in 1-player. They could have easily programed it so that the AI only knows where you are when you attack, and just have the computer player move randomly when it doesn't know your position. As for Frontier, I was expecting game with the playability of Elite, but in a much bigger universe. I got the bigger universe, but for me, the fun was lacking. I even attacked a space station, just to start a dogfight at maneuvering speed and found the combat to be quite clunky compared to the the original game. Most of the time, I would just load it up and marvel at the scale of things like space stations. I also discovered that the domes on the planets weren't solid and you could fly right through them. You could also fly through the box-like structures on top of those big, boxy cargo ships (like the one in the intro). Having said that, I really didn't like Elite on the Amiga either. It was fast and colorful, and at first I was blown away by it. Then I realized that it felt empty compared to the 8-bit versions. You never encounter friendly ships, they're always pirates. If you have a military laser, as soon as the alert pops up, you can come to a stop, and snipe them from a distance while you're still out of range of their weapons. Rather than feeling like you're part of a living universe, it feels more like an arcade shooting gallery. I loved Elite on the C64, but the Amiga version needed a little more work. They didn't even put in the "Dodo" stations. :(
