I think John plays a little sloppy in a lot of demo/clinic videos, probably because he's focused on what he's saying and not what he's playing. I've taught lessons for years and it always takes me a second to go from teaching mode to playing mode. From what I've seen he's much cleaner on stage (or in recordings obv).

On that second law Petrucci was talking about, I recall seeing an interview with Billy Sheehan (phenomenal bass player) once where he said playing live is one of the best things you can do as a musician. That whole part of knowing the fretboard eventually clicked with him while playing on stage once, I love the hand motions he used it was like his fretboard was exploding at him lol, and all of a sudden he understood where notes of the same chord lived up and down the strings. It may come a bit more naturally to a guitar player as they learn to solo and play around the neck more, but I guess it may be learning to improvise and how to improvise that really made things click, at least with Billy, rather than just exercises over and over again. Although that's just my guesstimate of what he was saying there, so nothing hard and fast obviously lol
@GermanFafian11 күн бұрын
Nice. I did have the fortune to interview John twice for a Spanish Guitar Magazine back in 2000 and 2003 and he is a really nice quiet person. Portnoy was nice too but a bit more outspoken and extroverted. Myung was beyond shy and quiet 😅 Actually the whole band was quite nice to everyone around.

LOL'd so hard at "I am interested in A minor." and your realisation of how that sounded. 🤣
@dudarino66611 күн бұрын
I learned early that my next octave is up 2 strings and up 2 frets. If the b string is involved its up 2 strings up 3 frets. Or down 1 string up 5 frets. This creates little scale boxes of 5 notes frist string, 5 notes next string up, and 3 notes next string up. These little octave portal/boxes help you se where to play around the fret board and it becomes much more manageable for a brain. EDIT: Awesome that he mentioned the 3 finger shapes. I figured that out myself as well. Every scale is a combo of those. Thanks ADHD haha

How do you practice improvising!?
@TheTachy0n11 күн бұрын
Not sure if serious as there's so much to improvisation but knowing the notes across the neck that fits in any given progression, nice sounding shapes and how to add some spicey notes to that is a start.
@Kerosian1Күн бұрын
Start simple. Take a two chord vamp like C to G and start playing the C major scale over the top. Learn what notes you like over both chords, play around with different notes. Find notes you don't like and how to move up or down to get out of them. From there it's just expanding the complexity of what chords you're playing over and what scales you play above each chord. Just takes time, but your ear will give immediate feedback as to what's right/wrong. The further you get with it the more things you'll be able to use, eventually you can justify any note over any chord by having the vocabulary you learned.

It’s funny sometimes watching all the average guitarists try to figure it all out and make up excuses and justifications. I used to not like DT because I heard Animals as Leaders and BTBAM first. But all of these years later and I have gained respect for Petrucci. His playing style is similar to mine. But it took many years for me to realize how dumb everyone is. All of these years of searching and realistically there’s hardly any guitarists out there worth respecting.

For the love of god, please learn your notes. You CAN survive without knowing them, you can utilise patterns for your entire career… but you will quickly realise you can’t compose anything beyond the absolute basics and you can’t move beyond basic guitar music. I have no idea what the major third is from C without sitting there and visualising the fretboard and the third fret on the A string. You will eventually need to progress past this. I have been playing for 27 years this coming November. I still don’t know my notes LOL 😂
