They really are wonderful hooks! If I could combine the shape and weight of a Furls crochet hook with the handle and head of a Clover Amour hook, I would be in heaven!! Lol! 💫💫💫

I'm so in ahhhh of your knitting skills. With you just learning 2018 (2 years after I started) seeing what you are capable of makes me really want to get working on my knitting. I took a class in 2018 at a local yarn store in Tempe Arizona where I lived at the time. The tulip etimo is my favorite and my 2nd is clover amour. I need to try a furl like you use. I have a furl but it's a wooden one and it's an inline. And that hook is nice but it's only for certain yarns and projects.

Great info! Since I started crocheting in college, all my craft supplies were bought from that budget and I definitely feel that drag with the cheaper hooks. Hoping to pick up some of those hooks one of these days.

I really enjoyed this video! I haven't tried all of those hooks, so this was really interesting. I learned to crochet, which included chaining and single crochet, at a free class at the library and they taught it with acrylic hooks, so that was my first hook. I then wanted to learn more, so I bought a cheap set of hooks from Amazon and started learning from youtube videos. Since those hooks were all I'd known, they were fine. They were actually like a generic clover amour. I then taught a friend to crochet and picked up for her a cheap set of crochet hooks from Hobby Lobby. When I tried those in comparison to my cheap set, I was like wow, my set is way easier to work with and I didn't like the set she had at ALL. Prior to that, I just figured any hook would do :) Then I waited until they were on sale and bought a set of Clover Amour hooks and I loved them. I was shocked that they were so much beter than my cheap generics that looked so much like them! I didn't expect there to be that much of a difference, but they became my primary hooks. After watching your videos, I bought a Furls hook for myself for my birthday, same size and, at first, it felt so different from my other hooks, so much bigger and heavier, it was awkward in my hands and I thought it had been a bad purchase, but after using it for awhile, I grew to love it! So, I'd guess my order would likely be the same as yours. The first two definitely are!

Interesting video! My first choice and last choice are actually the complete opposite of yours! 😂 I really hate tapered hooks, the yarn chokes up on the throat of the hook too much, so I love in-line Susan Bates hooks! Actually, that's all I use for amigurumi (same size combination as you) and I've never had any issues. I've been crocheting since I was a child with Susan Bates and if you hold the hooks correctly, you can crochet for hours without any hand fatigue! Also, Furls hooks do not have a thumb rest so it's easy to turn them too much and snag/split yarn. They are considered to be ergonomic, but I think that's only if you hold them a certain way, so actually, they cause cramping for me! 😂

On a side note, Furls filters out any unsavory reviews on their site, and only show top reviews in their 'testimonial' section. They do not allow starred/rated reviews, and I feel that's a little dishonest, not showing the bad as well.

This was so helpful, even tho I'm from a different country, I've only really used two types of cheap crochet hooks and everytime I see people talking about the Clover or Tulip hooks (that get super pricey since they're imported), I was so confused if it really made a difference or not, and being way out of my budget I felt I likely would never buy it to try it out. But thanks to your experience comparing the hooks and your comentary that really helped me take notes on what I should look for in a good hook.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video!!! This is exactly what i am looking for! Thanks to you,im getting into amigarumi. In my crochet ventures so far ive just used a random assortment of hooks my sister gave me: all of them are susan bates or boye. Ive found myself preferring the Boye by far, though i didnt understand why. Now i know its the tapered head difference. I have mild arthritis in my joints, but since I know im loving amigarumi and i currently do not have a 3.5 hook, ive been looking into getting the right hook. Its been overwhelming to decipher the ergonomic options out there, and i need to be budget conscious. Ive been uncertain which way to go & what to do!! Thank you!! ~Liz

I have to agree. The Furls hooks are my absolute favorite! The metal is so smooth and the size of the handle works so good for my hand. I can not open my right hand so the size slides into my hand and allows me to be able to hold a hook and crochet. I never have hand fatigue when I use my Furls.

So interesting! I'm very happy with the Clover Soft Touch... but now I ponder investing in the Amour set! I tried Lana Grossa hooks and while they were nice in my hand, the head was so thick I couldn't push it into the stitches! Another problem with the simple skinny alu hooks is the palm - they really hurt me after a while, the end of the hook was digging into my hand... and I was so happy to discover better hooks after working for years with the simple ones. If I'd have no alternative, I'd probably try to cover them with fimo to make them more hand-friendly. I also tried wooden hooks and they DRAG! Thank you for this very very interesting video! You really know your stuff.

I taught myself to crochet from a book I bought at the Ben Franklin store when I was about 20, I am 63 now, lol. I lived near a small town so Boye and Susan Bates were the only hooks available to me. I love the Boye hooks but the Susan Bates I found too flat and not pointy enough for my tight stitches, lol. Over the last few years I've tried many different hooks and I like the Clover and tulip hooks very much, I haven't tried the furls, the price has kept me from it so far. Thanks for your review Elise, I hold my hook a lot like you so the furls is on my wish list,😊. I also love to crochet amigurumi, I haven't tried to knit any yet but maybe one day.

I know this is an old video. But the dragging on a metal hook can SOMETIMES be fixed by taking the metal of the hook and wiping it aggressively with your t-shirt. Idk if there is stuff on the shaft and neck from the factory but I've found that helps with some hooks.

Furls are my favorite and I invested in all the sizes I normally use over a several month period taking advantage of affiliate link discounts and sales. They are the only hooks I own that allow me to crochet pain free for hours and I've been crocheting for 50 years. Next are the Clover Amour hooks which I have a complete set of before I discovered the Furls hooks. I love them as well, they were my upgrade from Boye hooks that were my favorite inexpensive brand. I've heard good things about Furls resin hooks but I tend to be of the opinion metal is the strongest option. Also, Furls has a great warranty. My G hook fell apart and I simply contacted Furls from their website, sent a photo and was sent out a replacement right away. The Clover Soft Touch is a great option if you crochet jewelry with thread, that flat handle is great for the really small size hooks 1.75mm and 1.50mm. They also include a metal sheath for the hook ends. But for the larger sizes I really prefer the Furls. Great comparisons review.

This was very interesting! I have been crocheting for well over 50 years and am still using the same mostly Boye hooks! I never really considered the type of hook, but I will now. I, too have hand and wrist issues, but never thought type of hook could make a difference. Though I'm not sure I could use the Furls hook since I hold my hook more like a pencil so that extra fat handle might just be in the way. Lots to think about though!

I made my first Amigurumi thanks to you :) and it was your free bunny pattern. I chose worsted weighted cotton with a Boye 3.5 hook. Oh boy. It was so so so so painful. In my palm and in my elbow. Then I listened to your recommendation and got a Furls Oddysey. I can not believe the difference. It was so good. I am 100% convinced that the tools do matter. Since then I made several Amigurumi and the process was such a pleasure. My Christmas wish list is the rest of Furls Oddysey Hooks. I do also use Prym Hooks. They are very good. But. They are plastic so for Amigurumi it's rather questionable due to drag. But possible. In any case, thank you for this review.

I do freehanded more realistic animal amigurmi, such as dog portraits. I also do a lot of amigurmi cartoonie or doll like," like your project's and I have been watching all your videos and picking up some patterns you have shown because they are just so so adorable ! - I've tried all the other hooks and I can't work with any hook with a thick handle - I do love Brittney Hooks also. I find it super difficult to crochet with a hook that is not inline. Worst on my list is Boyd but they are the favorite of my daughter who also does lots of amigurmi. Thank you for all the insperation! because of you i have been trying more crochet techniques such as color work.

Lol boy did I flunk this one!!! This video was super. Never imagined there was a difference in crochet hooks! When I first learned to knit; I was about 13. I really enjoyed it. Then my mom or my aunt showed me how to crochet. That turned out to be what I followed through with. I used the bates hook. I crocheted on/ off then had stopped for many yrs. I’m now down with Covid since the beginning of Nov; watched a few videos on crocheting and I’m hooked again. I was never interested in the amugraai until I saw one of your videos the other day! Ok so now I just love them lol. I am going to try and start with those cute little cat & hamster. I have experienced crocheting so hopping I can do it😊. I’ll keep watching your videos and thanks for sharing. Your videos are very informative and clear instructions given. I came here from Robyn’s site. I have a question that I have never thought about. What exactly is worsted wt yarn??? Just like hooks I thought yarn was yarn. I realized some is better than others but never the real difference. Well thanks again, Gayle❤️

That's wonderful, Gayle! I'm sorry you're sick with Covid, but sounds like you have been using your downtime in a productive way! There are so many different kinds of hooks and it really does come down to personal preference! As far as the yarn, worsted weight refers to the weight of the yarn, which just means it's thickness. Here is a great article explaining everything you ever wanted to know about yarn weight! doradoes.co.uk/2020/08/22/yarn-weights-explained/#:~:text=is%20yarn%20weight%3F-,In%20the%20simplest%20terms%2C%20yarn%20weight%20refers%20to%20the%20thickness,when%20placed%20on%20a%20scale. I watched this last night in the middle of the night. What a good evaluation of hooks. My mission today was to find the current hooks I have available. My bundle of collected through my life is missing. It was put in a safe place nearly 2 years ago. Now I can't find it. But I did come across the set of hooks I bought from a wood turner at a craft show. I also found a very few cheap hooks, mostly tiny ones for use with tatting. I just tested the turned hooks set. The handle is larger and ergonomically designed. I found it very nice. I have one other hook in the missing bundle I want to test. It has long been my favorite hook for worsted yarn. It is a hook my grandfather carved for my grandmother. I will test it when I find the missing bundle.

Nice that you compared all these hooks. I have no issues with my hands or wrists or elbows as you do, so my go to for amigurumi is usually about a standard skinny s.2/2.25. I use DK yarn or s. 2 or 3 weight for this, and it gives me a nice tight stitch pattern. For granny square afghans, I also use DK yarn but I go up to a C hook, and for this I use the Clover soft touch C/2.75mm, which I love. I don't think I could be comfortable with those great big round handles, but again I have no pain and strain issues.

I started with the Susan Bates and then bought E & D Clover "Soft Touch" (back when they were "a new thing" I think :) The thumb spot is the only "soft" part. My hands hurt and the yarn squeaks but I figured it was the yarn and not the hook. I'm a tight knitter & crocheter - although my hooks don't bend nearly as much as smaller knitting needles. I came for answers about size and shape of hook shafts but I think I'm convinced I need to try a couple of the top choices on your list. I also have only a few I use the most. Currently D. (C,D,E & F) I wondered if knitting gauges worked for hooks. Seem accurate for Bates basic hooks but the shape of the heads don't fit for Clover.

Thank you for this video… i do agree with you on the hooks and your order of ‘like’ vs ‘dislike’…… Honesty is the best. I appreciate it-so no worries here. I use a clover amour 3.0mm- and i have the clover soft touch; both glide thru the yarn no problem but they are SO short at both ends. They are stable ( don’t seem to get loose nor have i had the hook itself loosen and fall out like i have with other hooks that have a handle added to it). All my other hooks have bent and popped out of the handle. One that comes to mind is a hook from yarnology-which i love using it but the hook constantly comes out/breaks out of the soft handle. The handle has a nice feel to it, it is a slim kind of handle, but it does have some ‘grippy’ spots on it. I find that I actually do like using this hook also.

I grew up using the Bates and Boyeote hooks. I only recently switched to the Clover Amore hooks. I work with a pencil grip. I think the Furrls hooks are beautiful but, as you said they are not really in my budget. Plus, I know I cannot work with a hook a flat spot. They have a tendency to roll in my hand too much. Tunisian or afghan crochet hooks don't have the flat spot either and the rolling in my hand prevents me from doing Tunisian Crochet projects with a large number of stitches. Also, the larger size Bates and Boye aluminum hooks are a bit more comfortable to work with for some projects, just because of their size. I haven't tried the sizes larger than a "J" in the Clover Amore hooks because they're a plastic hook and I'm still trying to get all of the midrange hooks (only 2 more to go. The "B" and the "D" hooks). I probably will start picking up the steel Amore hooks before I start on the larger hooks because the larger size aluminum hooks I have don't bother my hands like the smaller ones do. I really appreciate your research and love your videos. Thank you. ✌️💕🦋

Hi Elise Thank you for sharing. Aww Pickle is adorable 😻 When I first started crocheting I purchased a Pony hook which I found at Big W (Australia). As I had no idea what the difference was in tapered or inline- I never knew there was anything other than tapered 😂 As I grew in my learning I’ve purchased other hooks and I’ve found that I need an ergonomic hook as my hand and thumb thank me for that. Once I learnt about inline hooks I did purchase a set of ergonomic (well most of them are apparently some of the larger and smaller sizes don’t come with an ergonomic handle) Susan bates but I’ve only recently started using them I can’t say I’ve made any Amigurumi with them but it’s a learning curve using them when you are used to tapered. I will say they aren’t as soft and big in the handle as I would like. My next hooks I’d like to try are the Furls Odyssey after hearing your reviews…they are a bit too much so I will probably put them on my birthday/ Christmas wish lists as I’m never satisfied with just one I need them in all my favourite sizes and they have too many colours and designs within the Streamline hook collection 😇🤩 I guess I’ve got a bit of a hook collection going- except other than Susan Bates and the Pony hooks, my others are all non branded but I love using them as they are comfortable to hold with the ergonomic handle. I can also agree that I love a long neck on the hooks and not really liking the short necks on some of my hooks ( the larger the hook it appears the neck gets shorter). Take care and stay safe 🙏🏼💗🧶😻🦋

I find a lot of difference of opinion in the "best" hook argument!! It interests me because in the search for a good fit , each person must try various hooks to find THEIR personal best. I start beginner students with a Boye or Susan Bates hook. I show them the difference in shank length, as well as the consistency of the shank's diameter - hence they are all 3.5 mm hooks. The thumb rest matters more to some students than others, depending upon their hold (knife, pencil or modified). The diameter and texture of the handle also affects the "sense" of the hook - does it "feel right" in a person's hand? Lastly, the tip and hook are VERY big factors for most people. If the yarn splits readily because of their manipulation of the fiber with the hook, the student(s) will never be happy!!! Each person has to use various hooks, and choose for themselves. And of course, the fiber(s) matter considerably, as well. Cotton and wool and acrylic each have their unique properties. Throw in various weights and blends and obviously, no one hook is going to work for every project!!! Very interesting video, Elise. I always appreciate your perspective. Hugs! 🦋🌺🐱

I'm so glad I performed this little experiment and now I feel even more confident in my recommendations and encouraging others to experiment for themselves if the budget allows! 🍄🌻🍁

I’ve been crocheting over 50 years and have only used Boye and Susan Bates hooks. The Susan Bates hooks are my favorite. I feel that they grab all of the yarn and I never have splitting problems with them. The Boye hooks always cause me yarn splitting aggravation problems. I’ve never tried Furl hooks. I see that Mary Maxim carries wooden Furl hooks. I might buy one to give them a try sometime. 😊

I think that's what's important, to find what works best for you! I'm not a fan of wooden hooks for amigurumi, but it may be something you like. I do like wooden hooks for other projects though. 🌻

I love the idea of the Furls, but that particular one was WAY too heavy and caused a lot of stress in my hands. There's definitely a noticeable weight issue. Clover Amour and Furls Streamline are my favorites.

Thanks for sharing! Wish there was a store where you could "test drive" all the different hooks to see which one(s) work best! 🍄

I like your video. I use a 3.5 mm hook each time I do amigurumi, unless it’s made with a finer or thicker yarn. I prefer “pointy” tips on my hooks for ANY crochet project. Because I hold my hooks like a knife, the longer the neck of the hook, the better. I decided to purchase one 3.5mm Furls hook (navy), just to see if I can tolerate the thickness of the handle. I had a thick handle made for me by a polymer clay friend. The handle is fine, but the necks of the replacement hooks are all too short for me. Disappointing! The design on the handle is lovely, but I don’t use it, ever! Thanks for insight into what drives your passion for amigurumi, Elise! Blessings!

I bought a Furls hook at your suggestion and for the price I really wanted to like it, but the handle is just too big for me. I like the Amour Clover but I like the soft touch Clover the best. I have tried almost all of the other hooks in your lineup but they have just stayed in my storage boxes. The Addi Swing has such a short neck and I wanted to like it, too, but I didn’t for that reason. Everybody has their own favorites, though, and that is why there are so many different hooks.

The Amour are my second favorite and can see how the Furls hooks would be difficult for small hands! 🧶🧶🧶

My favourite size is 3.5 also. I also prefer a metal hook. I haven’t used the furls yet. I like the silicone handles on the hooks sold at Walmart. I hate plastic hooks and knitting needles. I do not like flat handle hooks. The Addi Slim looks like a tooth brush. Strange short hook. I have to add a cover on full metal hooks. I do not like the actual hook on the Susan Bates. I like the aboyé hook part at the end but I need to add a thick handle. Metal hooks bend in my hands as well. I really agree with most of your favourites. I think I need to invest in furls - one at a time.

Metal hooks are my favorite. I've tried plastic and wood but they create a lot of drag for me. I really like the Furls hooks but the Clover Amour are a close second! Happy Stitching! 🧶🧶🧶

I got the Clover Amour hooks not too long ago and I'm in love! I'm starting to get back into knitting now because the Straw Animals goose needs a knitted scarf 😅. Do you have a favorite brand of knitting needles?

Oh no! I've never had that happen with my Furls hooks. I don't use splitty yarn very often for crochet because it makes me crazy! 😂

Wow I'm a fairly new crocheter, and I always thought the squeaking when I made amigurumi was my fault, like tension or something! I never thought it would be my hook! When my mom and I wanted to start crocheting, we went to the store, and she just got the cheapest set, which was Yarnology aluminum hooks. I would really love a crochet hook set where they are smooth and glide easy. I looked up Clover hooks because everyone seems to love them, but omg they are so expensive!

You can buy the clover hooks one at a time and they are pretty affordable. The Furls hooks are the ones that are pretty expensive. Hope you find a hook you like! 🧶🧶🧶
