What I love about you is that you don’t tell people to follow these trends and that they have to have it. In all your videos you emphasise to only do it if you like it yourself and it goes with your style. It is so important, I see so many people follow these trends religiously and then months later they end up changing it and selling items that they have only just bought!

Hi again, Garrett! I redid my kitchen a couple of years ago. I'm disabled, so all my lower cabinets are drawers. My pantry has pull out shelves, and other small accommodations were made as part of the design. I'd love to see you do a video on universal design and designing our forever homes for aging in place! Thank you!!!

I agree! I’m 60 and live in a home that is seriously dated! The kitchen, living room, bedrooms, basement room and laundry room need a total rehaul. It hasn’t been done since the 90’s and 70’s. Paneling in the living room and foyer is an eye sore and trying to convince the man in the house that needs to be painted, is a long battle for me. I’d like to paint it a nice cream white with crown moulding-is that even a thing anymore, crown moulding?

I don’t like the glass partition because I don’t want to be cleaning it all the time. I do love the SW color of the year. Green is my fav color. I keep things very neutral, but I would love a little color. 😀

I'm currently very fond of citron ("Citron is a dark lemon color similar to that of the fruit citron.") Sometimes it has a green cast. I'm trying to figure out how to incorporate just a LITTLE of it in my rental's kitchen.

If you're considering remodeling your kitchen, stay away from trends. Stick to a classic or traditional materials and apply trendy features that can be easily changed (lighting, paint and accessories). No matter your budget, a kitchen renovation is a huge expense and not something you want to do over and over. Pick things that you'll still love 10 or twenty years later. Oh, and stay away from the dark kitchens, it's going to be a deal breaker if you want to sell your home.

Good advice. Ten years ago, I painted my dark kitchen cabinets a creamy white, and then had black granite installed for the countertops. It still looks classic and beautiful, and I have no regrets.

Good information here. We just finished our new home, and put glass doors on the upper upper cabinets with lighting. I can add any color accent I want in those cabinets with colored glassware and swap them out when I want. Currently have red glassware for Christmas. White cabinets on the perimeter, wood island makes it easy to do.

I definitely like a formal dining room when you entertain or for holidays and special events. I prefer a separate eating area for everyday use. If you’re thinking soapstone, you should be aware of the upkeep. Around the sink, it can be challenging. Compare with black honed granite and black leathered granite. I love my soapstone, but it’s not for everyone.

I just had my condo kitchen redone last month and the black leathered countertop was Sooooo awesome. It would have been a great fit for my charcoal, grey and teal, modern style, but the maintenance and the thickness of the slab was not what I was looking for. I opted for a sleek, thin black/ glimmering quartz countertop called "starry night" instead. But the leathered finish is still something I think about.

I really love the darker kitchens. That's what I left a year ago, and I do miss it. My cabinets were a rich cherry, walls a mid-tone sage, and burgundy trim. My own renovation design, and I loved it. The kitchen I have now is pretty, but I'm not as in love with the white cabinets. Still working through evolving it into something more me, but I have some serious budget constraints for now. I didn't really care for the hidden kitchens. I can see where they would make sense based on your commentary. But they come across as very cold to me, so I couldn't live with it. Excellent video, as always. Thanks for the Linus fix!

This young gentleman really knows what he is talking about, a true guru of design. His analysis is laser like and precise he knows the cost of renovation is horrific and wants the payback to be timeless and long lasting. I fear the glass walls will turn into a nightmare on cleaning and the textured surfaces will be a petri dish of delight all those tiles and grout will age like my hairstyle very quickly. Trying to balance a bright airy kitchen with the need to robust and eye candy is almost impossible for mere humans, Garrett has got this accomplished. Dark kitchens for Northern Europe is a recipe for depression and grunge lurking in every crevice, so not quite my thing. More of these analytical tools please.

I love those kitchen trends specially the one with concrete and wood. I love the concrete look. I just remodeled this summer and I did concrete floors all over the formal living and dining area all the way to hallways and white walls cause I don’t have lot of natural light in my house so that made it look perfect so I think the flow of concrete in my kitchen would be perfect. I love the completely hidden kitchen. I’d love an Edwardian (in UK - possibly known as Queen Anne in USA??? - please correct me) home. My cousin asked me, just this week, how old my kitchen was as she said it still looks great. We chose pale grey units (as they’d never really been in fashion - until recent years - so figured they’d not date so badly). Our kitchen is now about 20 years old and we’re still happy with it. So as you say choose what you love and choose wisely, not just blindly following fads or fashions - great if you can afford it, but for those that can’t or don’t want to (environmentally a lot of resources go into a new kitchen).

I finally have a house where I can remodel my kitchen and will finally get my kitchen next year (I hope). Cobalt blue cabinets, butcher block and quartz countertops. And I love the larder idea, since I have always had what I call a "baking cabinet" where I keep my baking staples, and would be nice to store my cobalt blue Kitchenaid Mixer (that I've had for 25 years) and my Cuisinart where I can bake.

*Great advice G. LeChic!* I'm in the midst of a kitchen remodel and I'm just at the dry wall stage. I LOVE the look of the moody kitchen but I am concerned about the amount of natural light I receive. I decided to go with the full wood kitchen. Warm medium toned red oak cabinets with contrasting white oak floors. Great point on the cleaning maintenance of the lighting, I'm in the search for the perfect balance of timeless style, functionality and easy maintenance for pendant lights. Hoping everything all comes together beautifully so I can start filming in my kitchen again.

As much as I hate to say it......and believe me I live in a Condo with lots of oak trim and cabinets- eventually this will all fall out of "style" and have to be ripped out. I'm working on reducing the oak in my place one room at a time, it was built in the early 00's. Thank goodness for cabinet/trim paint, gel stain, and my wife's love for primative/farmhouse decor (we live in the midwest). Fun video......not so sure how I feel about those backsplashes, they are a pain in the ass to put in/take out. I personally like shiplap myself. In hate open-plan kitchen/diner/living room. What an awful notion. Whoever thought of it, obviously never cooked. It should be completely obvious that all smells and grease, etc from the kitchen are going to spread into other areas (and your sofa, curtains, carpet…nightmare!) that are not separated from the kitchen. I can’t believe it took so long for someone to come up with a divider. I mean… professional restaurant kitchens have had glass windows for the last two decades. It really isn’t that hard to figure it out. Btw, I loved your review. Very cool. Subcribed immediately .

When is the farmhouse trend going to die? All places that sell accessories are nuts for farmhouse. There are other styles, but they seem not to care. It is hard to find things in other styles. DIY kitchen remodeling as-we-speak. Upper oak cabinets a soft powder blue-grayish color and creamy white on the base cabinets. Natural maple butcher-block countertops combined with a naturally beautiful and darker live-edge wood top (all glaze coated) for the island (blue slate paint color). Finished with creamy beige walls, white hexagon tile backsplash and mood white (soft concrete look)12”x24” floor tile. The island (with lower seating on one side) is made up of base cabinets from a hexagonal (half wall bar-type) divider tear-out. Out with the old (chocolate brown, cream, green, and sun dried tomato) and in with the new (and final). Now back to work.

Thinking of a cream type of white for top and some kind of pale soft green on bottom cabinets. My counter tops on one side are butcher block and around sink need replacing. Any affordable suggestions?

Thanks for your comment. I don't give my opinion on specific interior decorating questions unless I can see the space, decor, furniture and really know what is trying to be achieved. It's very visual. So, I might be offering a virtual service on a limited basis for individual decorating consultations later this year.

Can we get rid of the breakfast nooks and the in-kitchen dining stools???!? The kitchen is for cooking! * Although… a soft seating area with a coffee table does sounds great for the cook ;) Glass partitions! Yes! Very Gosford Park. I love it! Because we’re 6 and we actually cook and eat at home, I hate open floor plans with a passion. I’m actually putting up curtains today. From the ceiling to the counters, to close off our open kitchen (we rent). We’re lucky to actually have a dining area that also fits a sideboard making it look formal. The dining area is separated from the living room by a half wall. Thankfully not close to the kitchen. 😁

Combine the 'concealed' kitchen with walls and you have the perfect space. Bored to tears with one floor living and Shaker-style cabinetry. It's also time to ditch granite or marble worktops and STOP putting the microwave over the cooktop.

I don't believe typical white appliances in general are trending. However, I do think that white enamel vintage look appliances are trending. I do like the enamel look in various colors including white.

Welcome to the channel Jennie! It’s great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family. I’m not a big fan. I like more timeless, classic designs with cabinetry going to the ceiling. These trends tend to date themselves relatively quickly especially with open shelving not being very practical for those who cook regularly and cleaning is a big issue. I don’t feel it gives the most elevated look to a kitchen. 😊😊😊

My kitchen cabinets are white , however, I painted the walls brick red. It looks fabulous. Color in a kitchen is invigorating! I love it. I don't like texture in a kitchen as you stated, it is a space that must be kept immaculate. Texture is a horror (shudder)

Agreed! That's why my subscribers know from watching my videos that I believe in taking one's time and not jumping on trends or something someone is pushing, but to think about what they really love and would be happy with for a long time and creating a plan to have that. That' applys to decorating any space.

I went with nice bright paint colors but when it came to tile I went with the plain old White subway tile. The really colorful tiles were too expensive. And when I thought about the cost of changing it out if I didn't like it the subway tile looked better by the second.

for my space, about the only 2 "trends" that would work in my kitchen are the pantry/larder, and the hidden kitchen. My hubby wants to make our small, galley kitchen have a monolithic look with frameless, no handles drawers in our cabinets. With some space for a pantry :) We are in a condo, so space is limited, and there is NO natural light coming into the kitchen

We will be remodeling our kitchen in the next 6 months or so and this video was very helpful. I love the idea of using the pop of my favorite color but in a dustier tone. I had included pantry cabinets in my inspiration design but love the idea it f storage shelves on the doors and the European larder look and functionality. I know that two toned kitchens are “out” but an all wood kitchen would be too much with our bamboo floors so I’m contemplating off white cabinets with a wood island and a pop of color in the pantry area but afraid that might be too “color block-y.” Decisions, decisions!

I am thinking of mixing a Black granite island top ( which I had) with quartz white with grey veins on it for the cabinet top on the surrounding cabinet- sink to oven to refrigerator area. Then painting the island bottom with a dark blue or black. Then the rest of the cabinets white. Is this crazy? I do have lots of natural light in the kitchen area

OMG ! Dear Mr Garrett, I'm sorry I haven't been able to write as much but have actually been having problems with my design. I'm building a big house and with the coppiced ceilings, frosted glass super tall doors throughout, wainscoting in my bedroom, and all suggestions already up to 1 million. That's without the kitchen laundry and bathrooms 😲 😱 😲. Anyway things are getting better now I've got about 1.1 as a budget and my kitchen butlers pantry came in at 88k and that's over what the builder allows which is only 14 k so OMG a 102k kitchen. A DISASTER. SENSATIONAL but a disaster... Anyway yesterday went and ordered the kitchen again I ended up not compromising the design but materials....Marble has wear staining water ring spaghetti sauce red wine problems and we are a farm family with a diesel mechanic son). We presently have granite. So to show you I have been well and truly captivated with your advice and design tips:- All from you Garrett !!!!!! Flush kickboards, cupboards to ceiling, no door profile for ease of cleaning, subtle grey veins with carrarra marble (but now FAUX) for benchtops and splashbacks. ALL Drawers below in design( pretty much) Lehman corner system Two tone kitchen - off white warm grey upper cupboards / warm light grey (both colours same as faux marble base colour and vein). Warm 🪵 wood flooring Feature big head with old fashioned telephone cord looking main taps. My polyurethane doors swapped out for an almost identical laminate which has thermal formed edges. Crystal and chrome handles imported from America (I'm supplying them). The Cooktop has had to be moved to the island due to faux marble backsplash but I found a chandelier pendant rangehood Elica Interstellar. So now while it won't be cheap it won't swallow my budget in one big greedy gulp!!!! All same in Butlers pantry as main kitchen

The glass partition looks gorgeous, but, for me, it would get tiresome after a while. The smudges, not being able to hear what is going on even if I can see, and the limitations of it. I don't know! I'm building a house in the spring and believe me I'm overwhelmed with all the decisions and choices. Gah!!
