Worth listening to! As a medical provider, I often cover sleep positions with my patients when they present with a morning onset of neck/shoulder pains, very common to be a contributing factor if not the underlying reason behind their musculoskeletal pains. And it's good to see these being presented here with some helpful and simple tips. Great work! Keep it up! Fan of the show in general, first post. You're an effective communicator! I refer several of my athlete patients to you for best cues, review of proper form, appropriate exercises for them, and just as much which to stay away from, and why. Fantastic! Cheers to your continued success!

@@bamf6603 back is the “best” for your skeletal structure to reduce imbalances from one side to the other, however, for some people this can increase apnea/snoring in some individuals, so it depends on the person is the best answer. Wherever you can sleep most comfortably and not have pain is what I would say for starters. If you can sleep in all positions, and don’t have sleep apnea, then again back may be best. I often fall asleep while on my back but always wake myself up with a snore, then I assume the side position. But using your on the back position advice, especially the head/pillow placement, I slept straight through the night for probably 8 hrs...huge shocker and extremely rare for me, hardly moved out of position, and woke up with absolutely no pain...I'm old so that's huge. After a lot of self experimentation over the last few years, I’ve found the biggest predictors of quality sleep for me were: temperature, how long I spent preparing to sleep (reading), and what I ate in the latter half of the day. Room too warm? Definitely going to toss and turn. Went straight from a night out into bed? Going to struggle to fall asleep. Ate a huge cheeseburger an hour before trying to sleep? Probably going to get shoddy sleep in the middle of the night. Caffeine, level of activity, amount of sunlight etc seem to have very little effect. It’s always wise to heed the Pythian Oracle and know thyself, since everyone is a little different with these things.

Interesting. I also have somewhat conflicting information about whether caffeine is really disrupting my sleep or not... at least, it does not seem to cause me any significant problems. However, I did indeed also notice that eating a lot before going to bed often causes me to wake up sweating about 3-4 hours into the night (which is probably related to some temperature cycles, as explained by Huberman), which is obviously quite disruptive. Btw., what really helps me a lot in general is looking at a bright light in the morning (20000 lux for 10 minutes) - that, plus getting up roughly around the same time each day, seems to be THE single most important thing, at least for me.

Same here, Sergio. My doc insisted I get away from the fetal position. My solution was to extend my arms in front of my body and clasp a pillow between them. Not sure I fully agree with back sleeping as general advice. I do it often but it's also the most likely to negatively impact your sleep quality due to snoring, sleep apnea and other conditions, especially as you get older. Side sleeping generally doesn't have these issues. Sleep quality is just as important as the other issues Jeff points out.

Side sleeping is the best position but you must have a few pillows to prop up and level out certain areas. I'm a predominately front sleeper and my back is trashed, side sleeping leaves me with no pain in the morning...

I'd say it also doesn't cover some issues I've encountered back sleeping. More often than not as the night goes on, my legs spread, I tend to lean towards one side, and my head will often lean towards one side as well. Meanwhile side sleeping with pillow supports I typically wake up the same way I fell asleep since there's not much room for free movement. This video kind of looks at these sleep positions in an ideal world with no movement during the night.

I think it's best to switch a bit, I naturally cannot comfortably sleep in one single position throughout the whole night, I usually start side because I fall asleep easier that way, and legs just naturally switch a bit once a while, then later I'll sleep for a few hours on my back, then side again, something like that

@@missioncodez side sleeping does not have any real impacts on posture or biomechanics, if set up properly, so basically like any other sleeping position. The worst you can say is that if you already have shoulder pain it might be uncomfortable sleeping on that shoulder. The fix is to address the shoulder pain. Side sleeping on your left also has the advantage of reducing incidence of acid reflux, which many people suffer from. It can seriously disrupt sleep and even damage your esophagus over prolonged periods.
@naasking
@naasking Жыл бұрын
@@missioncodez Sleep apnea isn't only caused by poor health. You clearly don't know the science you claim to know. Guess what's a major cause of weight gain which in turn leads to sleep apnea? We move while we sleep tho... Aside from a good pillow that keeps your neck at a decent level to your spine, the rest of your body will move, like when you are awake and you move from one position to another when you start feeling discomfort, your body will do the same while you sleep, not to talk about what you dream of as an impact on your movements as well. Now good positioning to fall asleep I can understand, but I can't recall the last time I woke up in the same position I have fallen asleep in.

the position you sleep in is directly related to the mattress you sleep on. I've been selling mattresses for years and the importance of sleep is huge. Get yourself a good mattress, try it out in the store - every body needs a different mattress. Your spine should be straight, your hips should melt into the mattress a bit, lumbar area supported and shoulders(most importan btw) should be deep inside the mattress. Also if you have spine problems make sure to tell that to the mattress guy. Stay healthy everyone!

Having done some research on this over the last few years as I have been dealing with some back pain, I now know that it's a combination of sleep position AND the bed you are sleeping on. You have to match the firmness/type of your bed to your sleep position. And everyone is different as far as what causes them pain and pressure points. There are tons of videos like this on KZbin but unfortunately, it really isn't as simple as "sleep in this position--don't sleep in that position"

Many people think it's a badge of honor to go through life with only a couple of hours of sleep each night. The biggest problem really isn't the position that we sleep in. It's the fact that we don't get enough sleep. The best position is to turn off all distractions and get to bed early. 💤 😴

For my fellow sleep paralysis sleepers, you have a greater chance to be induced into sleep paralysis when sleeping on your back according to studies. My recommendation is to sleep on your left side, it's the most optimal for fluid flow throughout the organs according to studies. This decreases the chance of developing pneumonia when sick. Jeff, Excellent points on all of this. I am a side sleeper and in an unfortunate way, I have wide hips and large thighs, small knees, and large calves. Aesthetically, I look great with solid legs. However, when I sleep, since my knees don't touch, when my top leg settles, I can literally feel it pulling my lower back down sideways. I started sleeping with a pillow between my knees and it helped so much. After chiros told me about the neutral spine position. I try to do that whenever possible. Great video.

I like the tip to put the pillow between the legs when sleeping in the side position (my personal favorite). While sleeping on one’s back may be best from a physiological and personal training standpoint, I don’t think any of us can really choose what position we like the most or what works for us. Maybe if I force myself to sleep on my back for a month or two I’ll learn to like it but that means a month or two straight of poor sleep, which I can’t afford. Good video

I was hopping out of the bed in the morning and wasn't all stiff for several minutes or an hour like I usually am. Glad to see Jeff says basically the same thing and it does work for me.

Been watching for years some videos are to complicated for a simple task but some were perfect like this one, I had pull or pinched a muscle in my back and could not sleep at all due to a irritated muscle this video saved my sleep (position 2 was the only one comfy)and help my back relax in 2 days it was 100% gone and was back in the gym like nothing happend.

after all these explanations of Jeff how could we missed sleeping like a bat is the best position. gravity helps to stretch all your muscles hip flexors, shoulders and all. it also helps you to get taller too.
