My favourite episode was the very first episode, where Opie has great difficulty accepting Aunt Bea as his new caretaker after his first was married off. The ending of that episode is WONDERFUL!!!!!

My favorite episode was when Gomer was asked to accompany Thelma Lou’s visiting homely cousin to a dance with Andy, Helen, Barney & Thelma Lou. Gomer meets her then swiftly leaves. It’s a misunderstanding that he ran out on her because of her looks & the other women were furious with him. Good natured Gomer actually went out to get his “date” a boutonniere because the other women had one. The episode ended on a very happy note (of course). But it was a heartwarming thing that Gomer did & shouldn’t have been judged so harshly ☹️

My favorite episode was the one in which Barney thought he could rehabilitate some prisoners held in the Mayberry jail. He gave them a metal working set and they wasted no time making a key and escaping. LOL! Another one had Aunt Bee try to cure Otis' drinking by putting him to work at Andy's house. Seeing Otis' predicament, one passing hobo told the other "Let's get outta here ... that's "the rock!" One of the series' funniest exchanges of dialog was Barney's figurative statement "You were standing before me naked Otis!" Wide-eyed with embarrassment Otis replied "I WAS NOT ANDY!" Another was what Briscoe Darling told Andy about Ernest T. Bass: "We thought about killin' him, but we kinda hated to go that far." Few comedy shows had so many colorful, memorable situations and lines.

I'd probably pick the one where Opie carelessly kills a mother bird and instead of Andy punishing him, Opie has to listen to the baby birds in the tree outside their house cry for their mom who will never return. Opie decides to mother the birds and when the time comes to set them free makes for a very poignant moment. However, there are many other very good episodes so to pick just one is nearly impossible. I agree Howard McNear was a GREAT performer and his greatness was reflected in many episodes. I wish he could have appeared in many more.

Actually, this episode was made in 1962,in the show's 3rd season. This is the last episode McNear appeared in before his stroke. Howard McNear returned in early 1964 and stayed on until 1967, when his health forced him to leave. He died in 1969.

My favorite episode of TAGS is The Song Festers where Barney, Gomer and Andy singing in The Mayberry choir with Mr. Masters. I enjoy the episodes especially when it has both Don Knotts and Jim Nabors in it. There are a decent amount of good color episodes. The color episodes were good in its own way.

My favorites are the punch in the nose and the one where the magazine publisher tries to get back at Andy by sending an undercover reporter that interviews Barney. Barney ends up getting away with it without any repercussions. How often does that happen?

By far the best episode in my opinion was the eighth show of the first year called “Opie’s charity.”Well written,directed and acted. Kind of two subjects that tie together and teach a lesson at the end of the show. This episode could also have been named “a matter of pride.”
