I really liked how you didn't bring politics into this and other channels have and the education was really informative. I really hope to have my first commercial building here too.

Hey! I grew up in Columbia. My family was one of the first 2000 to move there in 1968. While your decription is pretty good, the Columbia Assn. fee only covers the upkeep of the bike trails, parks and lakes. The outdoor and indoor pools and gyms are not included in the fee. They are several hundred dollars a year. This however is not mandatory as the fee is.

Hey Lawrence thanks so much for this question. It's one we hear of quite a bit. Honestly right now in mid February is when we see an influx of homes come on to the market and buyer activity starts to pick up significantly. So it's like the saying with planting a tree... The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is right now. We'd love to help you and welcome you to Maryland!

Given the rambling nature of Ellicott City, from the Patapsco River west to 29, north to 40 and south to Columbia the downtown flooding is such a tiny fraction of the whole. An overbuilt steep narrow valley. It's like once every 10-15 years. Most of EC doesn't even know it's happening til they see it on the news.

@thomasberdin3480 They are decent areas and provide pretty quick access to Baltimore. If you have kids that will be attending public schools, I would take a look at the Baltimore County Public Schools website to learn more about the school ratings. When are you making your move? You've got to go North - Lutherville-Timonium, Cockeysville, Loch Raven, or if you've got the money, Glen Arm. Country (ok, open spaces nowadays) happens north of those if you want it.

You may be inclined to consider communities along the light rail or the subway. Lutherville and Timonium are worth a look. Hunt Valley may be pricey. Pikesville is worth a look. I'm not too sure about Owings Mills. It keeps trying to reinvent itself and trips over its' own shoelaces.

Towson isn't a scaled down version of Baltimore. It's more like a less expensive Silver Spring, outside DC. Lots of recent sprawl, lots of traffic, lots of people. I liked it better back when, but that's just me.

Re the people of Ellicott City, you may be able to find the video of a woman trapped in her car as it was being washed away. 6 people, thigh deep in raging water formed a human chain to pull her to safety when her car jammed between a telephone pole and a storefront.

Someone once described Columbia as combining the worst aspects of Disney World and East Berlin. It's layout is staggeringly anti-intuitive. Don't ever think you'll just sort of find your way from A to B. Not unless you have a really good SatNav, or lots of friends to help organize search parties. It was THE yuppie burb back in the day, but a lot of the shine has worn off.

I have lived in Baltimore, San Francisco, and in Richmond, and in Oakland, California. Houston, Denver, Seattle, Washington. From my experience. Every large city has it's problems. For example. In San Francisco a huge problem was people taking a shit on the actual sidewalks and the city has a huge homeless problem that they are also dealing and you have the tenderloin. I am a disabled business owner and I plan on having a building in Baltimore I am wondering if I would be better off building a building in Baltimore and saving. I know there is a crime element, however. I think most of the crime here is drug and or gang related and I have never had that issue. I'd like to be apart of a neighborhood that gives me a deal on an up and coming neigbhorhood and restore a building and I would eventually like to restore a commercial building like a movie theater.

Baltimore has been declining in population for over 60 years, and crime has increased dramatically, how could you make a profit investing there ?

@@quick-and-easy “crime has increased dramatically”. That’s not true. I highly doubt. You live in Baltimore. I have residents who are proud to live in Baltimore. Spend their money on me. And. I’ll continue to grow my business in Baltimore and hire Baltimore. You act like. Another large city. Crime goes away? What causes crime? There are many things Baltimore is doing. To make it a better place. Baltimore still has 600,000 people. Have fun being part of the problem and a hater.

@@crmoore3941 yes. Actually it's height was 1.3 or so million. When MLK was assassinated. There was a large exodus of black people in the 70's. I've been here 2 years now. Compared to where I'm from. I'd be homeless. I think Baltimore gets a bad rap and a lot of unfair hate. And that's typical with lots of cities with large minority populations. The hard is a guise of racism.

Born in the city before Alaska was a state. Raised in northern Anne Arundel County. I left in 1980 and never looked back. Despite the awesome history and seafood, the outrageous taxes and colossal waste of my tax dollars on programs that achieve nothing…. Rural voices are obliterated by the voting block of the city and Prince George’s and Montgomery counties. I miss some of the people and history but I’m glad to be gone.

It's the wealthiest state in the union I don't think they got that way by making bad decisions. I get it, I'm born and raised in Baltimore but I moved away for 10 years and returned. It's not perfect (no place is) but it's not as bad as you described either. In Maryland you can live any life you want. The city provides metropolitan living and can accommodate all income levels. Or you can choose to live a suburban or rural life outside of the city and act like only morally corrupt people live in the city and bring down the rest of the state. I find it ridiculous how people who lived far away from Baltimore and never lived there pass judgement on something they know nothing about.
