you can use a rail track with a minecart hopper going back and forth over hoppers feeding the chests, put a minecart loader on one end(tons of videos showing different kinds) with your nuggets feeding into the loader

You can use an automatic sorting system (I’d personally use ImpulseSV’s design) and have this machine built under each chest.

Im assuming you need to know for a gold farm, and in that case usually you are probably fine to just attach it under your filter, combining 3 hoppers into 1 crafter. Gold farms produce so many nuggets that you will generally fill all 3 chests because of the hopper speed not keeping up with the nuggets. My gold farm (Dashplum's design) produces 36 golden nuggets every second, so with 6 hoppers I technically should perfectly keep up as hoppers move 6 items per second. Just to be sure I have 3 more hoppers for nuggets and those 9 hoppers feed into 3 crafters. Those 3 crafters feed into one crafter for gold blocks and then at the end I have a seperate 3 hoppers for golden ingots dropped by the pigmen. If you have ANY other gold farm 2 sets of 3 hoppers attached to crafters would me more than enough, and those 2 crafters could combine with the golden ingots from pigmen into a block crafter. A good option is to place a hopper minecart on top of a 2x2 grid, pushing it in the middle using iron bars as stoppers. You could make this 2x2 out of 3 hoppers and 1 solic block. I believe this would distribute evenly between all three.

Are there any downsides to replacing the repeater with redstone dust, and then a target block in front of where the repeater was facing, so you don't get the delay from the repeater?

you can do that too with no downside! I just tend to stay away from target blocks for early game designs

For java it will only work for some minutes and then you have to move the iron manually.

You should filter out the iron and feed it into this system so that no issues will happen

In that case, do a comparator then a repeater into a block, then to the left/right do 3 redstone dust back to the comparator and have a target block touching the crafter and redstone dust. If this isn't clear enought let me know and perhaps I'll make a tutorial on this!

You can only attach 3 hoppers to a crafter sadly :(, repeat the array as many times as you want along a water line to get better crafter speed.
