Interstellar is my favorite movie and after rewatching it at the end of 2022 I decided to purchase this watch. My first and favorite Swiss watch. For me it’s a symbol of the same year as a lot of positive (some negative) life events had occurred. I highly recommend this watch…great review!

Way more. Interstellar is one of my favorite movies of all time and it’s no surprise i absolutely fell in love with this watch when i first saw it. As a guy who prefers 40-42mm exclusively, i definitely think the 38mm is absolutely perfect for the Murph and would love to be able to buy one.

I like every change they've made. I think with the original one 42mm would have been okaaaaay, but the real problem was the 50+mm lug to lug, which is a chronic issue for Hamilton's case designs. They gotta take a leaf out of Seiko's book there I think.

I own the Cooper watch (first swiss watch I ever owned) and I bought the original Murph for my daughter when she went away to college - this watch is just striking, every time she sends me a watch-check pic (it's also her way of letting me know the watch reminds her we are connected across space and time) I wish I owned it. I do think there is a market for the 38mm Murph. My only complaint is that there is no ARC on this watch, and for the money and for how attractive this dial is, it really deserves one. I'm happy they have corrected this with the release of the 38mm, wish it was also on the 42. this watch indeed looks better on the wrist than in any photos

Theres no doubt that a Khaki should adorn every watch collection. They are just so classy in their simplicity and I have always adored the fine pointed ends to the cathederal hands in the same way the Alpinist does. A great value piece, sure its not an investment watch but it is a perfect everyday one.

I own the original 42mm release and it's one of my favorite pieces. Excellent move by Hamilton to pay attention to the feedback and make the smaller version available however.. I do agree with your suggestion regarding the case back. I don't mind the display but a nod to Hugo's iconic scene would make this watch God tier! 😁❤

About the movement, one thing you can’t ignore is that it is very, very accurate, on the timegrapher, my murph is at 0s/day, the cooper at -2s/day, being worn, both watches deviated less than 2s on a 4 day period, I don’t have any mechanical watches as accurate as these ones. So yes you can’t adjust them yourself, by you also don’t really need to.

Chris Nolan went for this dual design on the Murph because he didn’t want the inner 24hr markings. He wanted the cleaner look of just the 12hr Arabics. It definitely made for a gorgeous dial. I already have the Khaki Field Automatic 38mm, so I doubt I’ll get this piece. Really enjoyed the review as usual. TGV always adds wonderful context for his reviews 👌🏼

Already have one in the wrist and it has become one of the most worn pieces in my collection. As far as the movement goes, I think at this price point is completely OK. Mine is running -3s per day but your regulation remark is of course, correct. To be fair however, there are versions of this movement which uses plastic/synthetic parts (ETA C07.111 I think) and Hamilton does not use those. So thumbs up for Hamilton. I also agree with you on the solid case back. We should probably keep in mind this watch was meant to appeal to masses, perhaps first time watch buyers, who love to see the movement through case, even as utalitarian visually as it is.

Hamilton are such a great brand and have something in their catalogue for every taste. I personally own and love both Interstellar watches and am pleased that in releasing the Murph in a smaller size more people get to enjoy it. Makes you wonder why they didn't release it at 40 or 39mm in the first place. Even though it would not have been strictly movie accurate it would likely have suited everyone. Great review as always.

I love the Murph, always wanted one. I think Hamilton made a smart choice in offering a 38mm even if it’s not exactly screen accurate, for most this will be the perfect size. Next to the Omega Seamaster imo the Murph is the most iconic movie watch of the last 25 years. 😎

This seems like the perfect daily-wear watch. Yet, I do have some reservations about the movement you described... plastic parts? Possibly hard to service? Yes, I'd like this watch, but do I really NEED another? I already own a Seiko automatic field watch, and I also own a cheap Citizen quarts Eco-Drive field watch. I have beat that watch hard. It is all scratched up, and I wore out the strap. I replaced it with a ZuluDiver NATO strap, which is very comfortable. It has been ticking non-stop for 5 years. The lume is phenomenal. I charge it up once and I can read it all night. For a cheap watch that just plain "works," it is hard to justify pulling the trigger on this Hamilton, even though I really want it. Either way, great review.

The Hamilton H Series does not have a plastic pallet fork or wheel like the Tissot Powermatic 80 series, these are key components.
@Philbyyyy
@Philbyyyy 2 күн бұрын
There's more than one variation of Powermatic 80. Only the lowest tier has the plastic pallet fork. In any case plastic does not mean it will wear out faster. It's self lubricating so theoretically cna go longer without service.

Another very high quality video..thanks. I have the 38MM Khaki Field with the H10 movement. Mine is extremely accurate. When worn daily it hold somewhere around 1.5 seconds a day slow. Not sure what parts are plastic in it. My experience with regulating a watch is mixed. I've been successful with two Vostok watches, getting them very accurate. Not so much with the newer Seiko Alpinist....the reguating level was so tight I slipped off it and banged into the hairspring, causing the watch to become "bipolar". sent it back to Seiko and they fixed with full confession (was only about 3 weeks old direct from Seiko) and whatever they did didn't take long but cost me about 300 bucks total. So I'm a little gun shy about regulating anything more expensive than a Vostok these days, with or without a laser. This Murph looks a lot like the Khaki Field with a new dial and hands. Is the date still there under the dial?

Great review and an excellent video. My M-F watch currently is a hand-me-down from my dad, a 1969 Tudor Oyster Date+Day, Ref. 7020/0. At 38mm, it's the perfect size and for the day, on the large size. The contemporary Rolex Explorer was 36mm. I have quite a few vintage Hamilton, most military, and vintage chronographs but I really like this watch and will probably pick one up this year. A couple of corrections, the watch you show as a Hamilton 987 caliber-based watch 10:37 is actually not one. That is a post war 747 caliber. Also, Hamilton was not the first manufacturer to design watches explicitly for the US Army starting at the end of WWI. It is well documented that in watches were designed for military use and supplied during the war. At 10:47 you show an image of three vintage Hamiltons. I have this original brochure from the early 1990s for their Khaki watch collection. The farthest watch to the right, the “canteen” dive watch is actually a “put-together” that I wrote to Hamilton back in the day, that they had inadvertently presented a watch that was never produced and was a fanciful creation of someone with field watch’s movement and spare dive watch case. They replied to me that through their own internal research into the matter, agreed that I was correct and that they would make a correction if they were to reprint that brochure. Back then, it was snail mail for me, and I don’t know what I did with that correspondence and I’m not even sure if they ever printed additional brochures to correct the mistake.

I was going for the 38mm but on flesh i actually really loved the oversized 42mm. It's a beauty. Screen accuracy - the 42mm matches the prop watch size, though there's no morse code on the second-hand in the film, so the 38mm is more accurate. Neither the 38mm or the 42mm suffer that that stuttering second hand issue either ;). Agree with TUG that Hamilton would be missing a trick if they didn't start considering other colour offerings on the 38mm - especially earthy tones.

I owned the 42mm and I have a larger wrist close to 8". The 42 even wore big, I think it was the dial design. The strap was terrible and I found the watch uncomfortable even after a strap change. I tried it on the Hamilton bracelet as well and it was still a no go. I agree with TGV on the faux patina. Seems like they are trying to hard on this one. I had a hard time selling it even after dropping the price several times. Mine came with the limited edition coloured box. My feeling was that it being a "movie" watch decreased the value even more for some buyers/collectors.

Great job, thank you! I love this watch and am considering it for sure. However, your con section does give me slight pause. I'm weighing the Lorier Falcon and the Smiths, assuming I can get it, against this, at half-ish the price. Haven't seen those two in person. Would you say they give up that much to the Murph aesthetically? Obviously subjective. I think the Murph is beautifully turned out, but perhaps in person these others hold up. Love to hear your perspective. Thanks!

38mm is Perfect. The rest of your opinions are spot on and accurate. Considering the search for affordable heirlooms, it would be preferred to have an adjustable movement, lume on the second hand, huge on the engraved back, those wants aside... the price of around 400usd is incredible.. also... IMO I can't stand date on any watch where it's so small you need to have glasses on to see it.. absolutely pointless... make the date big or leave it gone... after years now.. still loving your channel, effort and loyalty to your crew.. cheers

I'm really glad they finally made this in a more universal size. However, I'll pass on it since I already have an older Khaki Field Auto with the original 2824-2 movement. The case design seems to be mostly the same, so they'd be a bit too similar. Like you I prefer the old 4Hz movement to the newer 3Hz movements with free sprung balance. I'm also not a fan of the fake tanned lume, which is a trend I wish would go away. Speaking of smaller Swatch Group watches, I've been fascinated by Tissot's unisex offerings lately, the 35mm PRX and 36mm Seastar. Any plans to get hands on with those? I did get a 36mm Longines VHP recently which has gotten a lot more wrist time than expected and has piqued my curiosity about other options in that size range,

TGV is the only one who talks about the powermatic 80 problem.... On the other hand, Seiko does use plastic gears for their date mechanism in the 7s, 4r, and 6r movements....

What is exactly a problem with P80 in this Hamilton? It doesn't contain any plastic parts, it can be serviced and regulated (maybe not by yourself but for sure by independent watchmaker(there are videos on youtube btw)), based on old ETA design, slower beat rate for even better theoretical longevity, much longer power reserve of 80h compared to prior 38h only. Maybe only it doesn't have smooth second hand because of slower beat rate but that is really barely noticable.

You should try to get your hands on a Serica 4512 if you can for a review. I think you'd love the California dial version.

My compliments on the review. So nice mix of history, technical specs and personal perspective. The 38mm dial size is perfect for my 6 1/2 inch wrist. Will be getting this once I recover from blowing out my watch budget.

Love this! Hamilton are an amazing entry level brand. Would like a 28800 beat in this watch. Great video.

Just picked up another field watch, a brand-new Christopher Ward "Sandhurst" (series 1) and I'd say it tops the Murph in several ways, being COSC certified, approved by the British Army, costing only $735, and coming with CW's five-year warranty. Plus I like the look better, but of course that's purely subjective.

A really great walk though of the watch TGV. The 'Murph' as per the film was an old watch, the lume had gone yellow, the hands looked old and possibly a tad corroded and it was a bit scratched up. The original release (I have that one) produced as a 1:1 had as some might say 'quirks'. It's big by todays standards but the one in the film is big. The lugs are long, yes they are but they taper down a lot so don't take all measurements as how the watch will wear on the wrist. There was no AR coating on the original release, there was no AR coating on the film version, remember it's an old watch. Anyway on my wrist it fitted OK and I loved the old watch vibe made with modern tech and assembly. Having seen the new 38 at the AD in the flesh I think Hamilton did a great job, it looks just like mine but has been on a hotter spin cycle than ideal. The strap does take a bit to break in but once it has it's fine. Should Hamilton make one with white markers and lume? Definitely yes. Should they add more or better AR? Yes. Should they do an 'option' for a 2824? It would be nice but probably cost more. The thing is that once all these changes have been done is the watch still a 'Murph'? Probably not but I would consider getting one if I could justify it.

Omg you took off the PAM!! Put it back on hahahaha. It’s great that Hamilton offers two sizes. I probably would wear the 42mm for my larger wrist. I just like big watches. I own the khaki Pilot automatic in the larger side. I regret not buying the Khaki Pioneer when it was available.

Offer the Murph 38 in a brushed SS bracelet and I think you have a great substitute for the venerated Explorer. Outstanding watch, clean simple lines and design. Perfect. I will always take brushed over polished every time. I did not catch whether it is screw down? I am assuming push/pull at 100m?

Someone correct me if im wrong but it was my understanding that the H10 is a version of the powermatic 80 that does NOT use plastic parts.

@@robertfatoulatchi9482 It's bot the same movement. Hamilton's H-10 has 25 jewels while the Powermatic 80 used by Tissot has 23, that one with 23 jewels has plastic escapement and thus 2 less jewels from the palet fork 🙂

Not sure whether 42mm is "oversized"? It kind of depends on our individual wrist sizes, For me personally 42mm isn't by any means _too big,_ but 38 would be verging on being a little bit _too small._ But for others, I guess 38mm is the better size. It just depends on the individual.

I hope I can find a local dealer with both of them in stock. I have a larger wrist so 42mm is usually fine for me but the lug to lug of 52mm seems extreme.

Excellent points on the movement aspects in particular. That's why I thinks the watches featuring the 6R35 for Seiko have the upper hand, as they simply are more serviceable by independents. Still, that Murphy watch is a thing of utilitarian beauty. Thanks for the review ! 😃
