I’m not exactly the kind of guy to obsess over online multiplayer games, but Rumbleverse is an exception. Let’s talk about why my favorite battle royale was shut down in just six months.

That was me and my younger brother at 40:35 We didn't think anyone else would be on so late at night, but it meant the world to us to see someone else just looking out at the city skyline one last time. Genuinely one of the most powerful moments I've ever experienced in a game. Rumbleverse really was something special, and even after something like a hundred hours I still wish I had given it more of my time. Thank you for this tribute. I hope to see you in Grapital City again some time! ❤️

Bro I teared up watching that. It was such a sweet moment and reminded me of all the good things about video gaming, having a good time spending times with like minded people just trying to disconnect from the harsh realities of the world and connect over a shared gaming experience. The thing about rumbleverse for me was the horrendous onboarding. You boot up, and you're brought to this main menu with just the worst UI. Zero onboarding, zero tutorial, zero explanation as to what is is you should be doing or where in the menu you should be looking.. Just a really odd choice. I ended up going into some sort of "practice" lobby.. I think? Just heaps of items lying around everywhere with incredibly unintuitive controls. Really put me off.

I found Rumbleverse in early November; I have never been happier to find something in my life. The pure cheesiness of the game made it so fun to play, even if my friends didn't like it, I loved to rush around pretty much constantly dying and having a laugh. I wish that this game will come back to life and we will be able to continue playing this game. But for now R.I.P Rumbleverse.

One of the most unforgettable rumble moments for me was in a February 1 match. There were 5 of us remaining and when the ring was moving closer to the ocean, everyone stopped hitting each other. We don't know players, but none were bots and no one was talking on the voice chat. Instead everyone was just using emote animations as we moved towards the ocean. It was a weird moment, but I think we understood each other when we all stopped fighting and just headed to the ocean, see who falls or gets counted out last. Luckily, I still have dozens of my Rumbleverse victory clips in my Xbox One and Series X as memories of an awesome battle royale game.

You strait up got me to cry over a game I've never played before, or even heard of. I think for me it strikes a cord because I'm currently working towards becoming a game developer and this situation is one of my biggest fears. Pouring my heart and soul into a game I know is good, only for no one to play it or be able to play it. At the same time however, it's heart warming that, even if I make something that doesn't manage to pick up traction, it will still touch the hearts of at least a few people, and that' all I ever really set out to do.

Sadly that was exactly the issue. The game looked good. It was fun to play with it.. for a week. Then you actually started understanding the workings of the game, and it unraveled. Perks are obtained solely through rng. Someone who played super passively and barely engaged in fights, might have more strength from their one single perk, than someone who constantly fought and has 3. Many elaborate and cool moves can be interrupted during their super long animation. So just fight 1 v 1 right? Well sorry bud, but 8 people are alive so that means you have to all be confined to a 5m by 5m final circle. And then, netcode comes in. Lag affects this style of game HARD, and to make things worse they didn't even attempt to hide it. It's one thing to believe you made the correct input, it's another when you can see your character make the winning move, only for the game to change its mind and kill you instead. This is compounded by "super mode" which let's you oneshot people, with an infinitely spammable move, and healing to heal back dmg taken while you were brainlessly spamming this move hoping the netcode gives you a free kill. But hey, it's not a oneshot, after all even in solo, you get revived if you still had your super meter right? Well yeah too bad the enemy gets half their super back because they landed the instakill move on you, while your meter is empty, and you have half their health. Obviously the game was enjoyable for many, and I'm not saying they were wrong. But with the incredibly generous monetization it had, and the game's inherent high skill ceiling nature, they needed long term players in droves. And yet they still made it so that skilled players will curbstomp noobies in general, but also that no matter your skill level rng can still screw you over. I can clearly see how playing it with friends could be much more fun, but the game is super unique. Meaning that out of your average joe's friend group there's a good chance you won't find people to play with. Every long lasting online game has decent solo experience.

33:24 This. This is the charm of a small gaming community. My favourite PvP game of all time is Titanfall 2 and before the servers went to shit, I knew nearly EVERYBODY in my region in that game and... Well not to toot my own horn but I was pretty fucking good so I'd very often see people leave at the start of a match and then get a message like "I'd rather leave than vs you" and while that did give me a big head sometimes, it was weirdly wholesome, the fact that I'd recognise everybody and they'd recognise me just made the community feel so close knit and it's a community I'll say I'm part of until the day I die. Edit: fucking hell this video has me tearing up over a game I've never played. The Undertale music playing towards the end hit DIFFERENT.

We were actually completely spoiled with those lootboxes. It gave a generous amount of cosmetics for playing, whether you paid for them or not (after my 300 hours of OW1 I got 100 skins and hundreds of various other cosmetics mostly for free). yakko, thank you so much for putting manual subtitles on your videos. i'm not hard of hearing myself, but sometimes for whatever reason (potato chip crunch is a common one) i need subtitles to supplement the audio, and it's always awesome when a youtuber puts in the effort to add proper ones. i've always loved your videos and this is just one more reason

This touched my heart. Right now TF2 is going through a similar struggle as a live service game, albeit more from dev neglect than what happened to Rumbleverse. Point is, we welcome all if you need a silly yet competitive game to get into, 15 years strong~
@ImGonnaFudgeThatFish

TF2 is only a live service game in the sense that it has an item server keeping track of collectables for every player. Otherwise, the actual gameplay can be handled by the server browser and player-hosted servers should Valve ever remove their own. TF2 came out originally as just a "multiplayer" game, a foreign concept these days, I know.

I too am that tiny pixel at the center of the Venn Diagram. I remember being so excited when I heard about this wacky cartoon where I could platform and grapple. I was so excited to play it when I got less busy. When i saw the headline that it was shutting down, I got a sinking feeling in my stomach, knowing that I would not get to experience a game that seemed tailor made for me. It was the single game i most regret missing. Then your video came across my dash. I realized i'm commenting on a video that's several months old, but it warmed my heart to hear about your experience with this game. You've got a new subscriber. I'm excited to see what else you keep publishing. Thanks for making a (semi) old man smile.

It's sad because this isn't even a recent issue with modern games, my first MMO was Zentia which shut down when I was about 11, I remember my mum let me stay up till 3 am till the doors shut. My mum passed away when I was 12 and she was very sick before that, so most of our relationship was built through playing games together, zentia was a massive part of it, and it's a shame I'll never be able to see it again. It was a beautiful Chinese fantasy mmo with really interesting folklore I'd never seen before - also it had a really fun mount system where you could catch mobs and ride them around!!! My favourite one was a gigantic hermit crab!!! I'm 21 now and I miss the game and the friends I made through it deeply, this video felt really nice to watch and reminded me of things like that ^^

I first learned about Iron Galaxy because of their work on Killer Instinct, and between that and Rumbleverse I think I can definitively say that they're one of the best developers an online community could want. I only learned about Rumbleverse's existence a few months ago by having a very very rare moment where I started browsing the xbox store looking for something to try, as I was extremely bored. I'm not much of a gamer, but this game resonated very well with me as an ex-wrestling fan. I got all my friends into it who had never heard of it either until I mentioned it. I don't recall ever seeing any kind of promotional content for Rumbleverse anywhere, ever. I don't necessarily agree with the idea of "Battle Royale" being a genre of it's own, this to me (despite being Battle Royale), was the best pro-wrestling game I have ever played. This needed to be marketed to a wrestling fanbase, which is "niche", but a demographic that would eat it up, as me and every single wrestling-fan friends did. As far as the gameplay itself, personally, it got to a point where I felt like the seemingly unlimited combos got a little ridiculous and was a bit of a turn off, and felt like I couldn't share the game with other friends without making new accounts so they can actually enjoy the game play before reaching the tryhard lobbies. Despite feeling overwhelmed by the combos towards the end, I had learned how to perform combos myself, and fully appreciated the competitiveness (and randomness) of Rumbleverse. I had stopped playing this game for quite some time, as I got really busy with work, but remembered it frequently and always knew I would eventually get back to it. Yesterday one of my friends and I decided to go play around, just to find out that the game is now dead, and today, the thought that I might not ever get to play it again is deeply saddening. I was under the impression that the game was just too good to ever go away, and that given my break I would come back to see major improvements, maybe new features. I was never one to care much for cosmetics, and I was happy with my character's look from combining some free stuff that was available. So personally I never spend a single cent on the game, despite loving it so much, and none of my friends I played with did either. I'd assume this was the case for many others, which explains how the cost of running/maintenance just didn't make sense to keep going. At it's core, the gameplay was amazing, and I hope that they find a way to bring it back under a new profitable formula that allows the game to thrive, and pay for itself to run, tho I fear it might bee too late at this point.

While I never played rumble verse much, (maybe 2 or 3 times) I put tons of hours into spellbreak. When I first found out about it I bought a supporter pack because I really wanted the game to be successful. It was a sad day when the game finally shut down, considering it was my favorite game at the time and I really thought it was something special.

Something you mentioned that stuck out to me was the human connection with people. I play a lot of fighting games and genuinely its one of the best things about them. The interactions between people and seeing someone you've played against before, knowing these people just from the colour they choose, how they play their character different from other people, all of it is so very human feeling and its what drives me to play them over other games.

Trios and Quads were added later for a limited time (not sure if this was because the game wasn't designed to be that chaotic or because they didn't wanna split the player base further) before being permanently enabled in the month before shutdown. It definitely was some of the most fun I had with the game, though, so I'm sad it wasn't there from the start.

We've reached the live service singularity! I wanted to play rumbleverse but as someone who is easily effected by FOMO, I was already feeling tied up with the daily lists of chores from other live services. It doesn't help that I like collecting, so when a game removes part of a collection and I didn't complete it I usually end up just dropping the game. If this game didn't have all the hallmarks of a live service game I'd have been more likely to play it I think! Something I'd dip into for a few rounds of fun without worrying about feeling a need to grind out yet another battle pass.

And here you are with an eloquent script, excellent editing, with solid jokes cementing the pacing. You intelligently analyzed the unique game design, shortcomings, and the social experience. Noted the infinite amount of awesome unique battle royale moments in every match. You immortalized the ephemeral experience of Rumbleverse. A gaming treasure that people sadly can't play anymore. Thank you for making this video man. If they revive the game, I do think they need to do what you suggested and make a streamlined tutorial. And make all the characters hot, while still retaining the silliness. God I hope they bring this game back with well endowed Anime Women THAT WOULD MAKE IT FLY OFF THE SHELVES

people and companies don't appreciate works of genuine art, passion, and craft enough like this game clearly was. Its not something I personally would have played (don't really play online games, esp competitive, but the online games I do play - i play by myself anyways), but it does make me so sad that a gem like this couldn't survive longer than it deserved to. Mad props & respect to the dev team for sticking to their guns and made the best of it, it really showed with those bot names 😹 & it also showed that really cared about their fans by the manner in which they went out. Maybe the world wasn't ready, maybe they were ahead of their time like you said. Hopefully there will be another chance someday, or at least hope for even more passionate & truly fun games like this to come. Awesome video my guy, you have my sub ~ 😸
