I just got a 2022 Kawasaki KLX230R as my first ever dirt bike. I was drawn to the reliable motor, low maintenance, electric start, fuel injected, and trail tuned suspension. It doesn't have top end WP shocks or anything but it's probably going to be a far better machine than I am a rider for a very long time. So far it's been a fantastic machine and clocked in brand new at around $5k. I'm happy so far.

Im a Vet rider who finds himself gravitating to the older higher performance trail bikes, like the WR250F and KLX300R/KDX200. I think more newer riders should start out on them for $3-4k and learn maintenance on these easy to work on, reliable bikes. And then sell them for the same price they paid.
@DirtBikeChannel2 жыл бұрын
You make some decent points. That said, one issue with that is the the newer riders are usually not as adept at maintenance and things of that nature. It works for some, but not all, you know?
@riccochet7042 жыл бұрын
@@DirtBikeChannel KLX300R is pretty low maintenance. Oil every 60 hours after the first 2 break in changes, valve adjustments every 100 hours. My issue with it is it's an extremely heavy bike. Right around 320 lbs wet. It's a lot of bike to handle weight wise. And for a new rider that's going to be dumping it that can be very off-putting when they have to expend so much energy picking it back up.

@@DirtBikeChannel Reiju Rangers are great beginner/trail bikes & so are some offerings from Kawi, etc....Honda CRF250F is avery good beginner bike. I started on a Honda CRF 250R. Bit of a fire breathing dragon. I then went to the Beta 350RR 4 stroke. Great low end power but heavy. Now i have a Beta Xtrainer 300 2 stroke. This bike is for us shorter people. It’s frame is 15% smaller than other full size bikes. It has a 300 2 stroke, but has a smaller pipe and so it is dialed back. But, you can put a full size pipe on it and change it into a full 300RR race addition. So very flexible to grow with. I used to be a fast rider, but now as i have aged, i have dialed back my speed. this xtrainer is the best bike for slow technical. It is a mix between a trials, and enduro. It is only 216lbs. Way more power than a 230 or even the 250x but 30-50lbs lighter. Seat height starts at 35”, and can be lower. that’s 3 inches lower than the others. Game changer for beginners as well as intermediate riders and even advanced older folks.which is me. It is so light. It does have soft suspension, so not a whoops kind of bike. It does have power to do whoops, just not a suspension for it. Sooo much fun!!! And its much much cheaper new than other new bikes. KTM, etc.

My daughter is small 5’4” and timid so she should be good for another year or 2. The other best thing I did was take my kids to a riding clinic/class after a couple of months of riding around. Was leaning towards the beta xtrainer but also the 200rr and 300rr just because of the suspension. I would say I’m between a novice and intermediate rider just because it’s been awhile for trail riding. Open to other options but needs to be easy to plate because of some of the areas I would be riding requires it. Love your videos btw

Perhaps the former Gas Gas and nowadays Rieju EC 300 Ranger! It's a reliable bike perfect for beginners which can become a keeper eventually.

I was going for a yz125 but found a used 2008 ktm 125sx 15 min from my house so picked this one up instead and love it so far. I'm a small guy at 5'7 135 lbs so it's got plenty of power for me. Only used it in wood trails and grass fields so far but when i get better and more confident i plan to take it to a track close to home they also have a enduro trail that seem pretty fun.

The 200 Beta would be my first choice. Sherco 125 or Ktm 150 would be my other choices. If I was getting back into hard enduro. If I was just doing cross country stuff or even hare scrambles I may do the 300 beta, sherco 300 or Beta 390 RRS. I am on the shorter side so I like the smaller lighter two strokes and set them up for my height. I can throw them around. I use to have a bored out YZ 125 with weighted fly wheel and better gearing for the woods. I could take that bike anywhere. I miss it.

Need to check out the rieju MR 300 ranger (rebranded gas gas) I just bought one as I’m only 5’7 and the seat height is only 36”. It’s an entry level big bore enduro bike that has very smooth power and very usable low end torque. Steps ahead on the beta xtrainer but fits in the same category

It's great see your passion and enthusiasm for the dirt bike sport and wanting to get more people out riding dirt bikes! In my opinion, a 125 2T wouldn't make a good beginner bike. The 125 motor doesn't like to be lugged and you need to know when and how to use/slip the clutch on tight trails. Unfortunately, most new riders are still learning how to use the clutch. Just my .02

We will have to agree to disagree :) That's exactly why it's a good fit IMO. If you are going to learn to ride aggressive, thats what you want.

You've got great passion and enthusiasm for getting bums on seats. Good work and I applaud this. But I do feel that suggesting starting out on a 2 stroke 300 could be a bit dangerous for a novice rider. Owning one myself, I'm a bit of a monster at 6'8" and 145kg, I don't find it at all hard to tame but I've had guys ride it and they are literally overcome by the power. In big open paddock this is not a problem but on a trail...... The 150 class enduros are awesome, as you stated, as are some of the more friendly 250 4 strokes ( I've never had the pleasure of riding a sherco as no dealer support nearby ) There are many, many less experienced riders at most trail rides around this area on TTR230s, KLXs, trail CRFs, DRZs etc all having a blast and with the lower powered motors they're not getting worn out, not stalling much, and not having to spend much on maintenance other than keeping fluids up, chains tensioned occasionally and, from time to time, new tires. But one thing I feel you didn't mention is that the bike comes in behind your local support. I'm not sure what is like in America, but here in NZ and also over in Oz, the Japanese brands are well covered for dealers, and you'll find a dealer for ktm/gas gas/husqvarna in most regions, but Beta, Sherco and specially TM ?

I bought a 2022 yz250fx on your recommendation. I'm an experienced trail and dual sport rider looking to go faster, do some mx, and maybe even a hair scramble or cross country race. Hope I got the right bike but wish I gave more thought to the beta 200. But I'm 6'2" 175lbs without gear.

What is a good bike for me after all these years thank you And I love your channel. Thank you again.

I honestly think if you really are new to dirt bikes and want to do like some Forrest / trail riding, even going on a track blasting round, you don’t need any more power as an adult (unless you are massively overweight at 200lbs+, even then you really should be getting yourself fit and lean before thinking about riding dirt bikes) you should be riding like an 85-105cc bike. Say for example, a CR 85 will go 65mph, and the seat height is only around 34 inches. Get a strong spring and the front forks resprung for your weight and you will learn immensely faster than jumping on a full size 200cc or even a 125 is too much for a beginner, they aren’t like road bikes and you can even find yourself in trouble on a 2t 125 if you’ve never ridden before. I think it’s a necessity to get on a ‘small’ bike and learn how to use the controls, get comfortable then move up to a full sized bike. I never recommend anyone unless they are like 6’4 to even get on a 125. I get why you are recommending the beta 200 and ttr 230 etc but I don’t think they are the best option for learning at all due to the size and weight and you can get in trouble fast on those bikes also. I think this is easy to forget if you’ve grown up riding dirt bikes from 50’s, to 60/65’s to 80/85’s then to 125’s/ 250f’s the learning that took place throughout the years on these bikes.

Good suggestions. I want to get my GF on a bike and I have a TTR230 for her to hop on but I'm worried that a heavy bike with drum brakes and crappy suspension will give her a bad experience. I wish there were more of a performance-trail segment of the market. It seems like Honda and Kawi are trying to fill that role by updating their CRF and KX trail bikes.

Hey Kyle great video. From personal experience i have slightly different views on what's THE best bike for a beginner. im fairly new to this amazing sport. i've been riding for almost 3 years and i started riding when i was 20(currently 22 going to be 23 in 2 months) i can agree getting a 450 is the worst thing you can possibly get starting off. However from personal experience i don't think getting a 125 or 250 2 stroke is the best option(for riders with ZERO experience). Even with the 250 4 stroke i still THINK that for a person riding with zero experience, the power might be a little overwhelming. I personally started off with a 2016 yamaha ttr 230 for my first bike and i truly believe it is the GO TO first bike for anyone that has zero experience. Looking back at it now do i think it's slow? yes lol but at the time i truly felt like i was able to master the craft and truly learn how to ride. it had enough power to do ANYTHING i needed it too and it has been the most reliable bike ive ever known. The motors are truly bulletproof and maintenance is super super easy. Parts are also cheaper on the bike which i believe is important since new riders are bound to break things. After having my ttr for a little over a year i decided it was time to upgrade. i purchases a very very clean 2013 KTM 250 xcf. i love this bike alot more than my 230 BUT i still don't regret starting off on my 230 due to all the things i was able to learn. i still have my 230 as an extra bike to have around and as a spare bike to ride on while the ktm is at the shop getting the valves adjusted. Overall i love being team orange but it does require more maintenance than my 230. Just speaking from personal experience! we all have different views!
@Doughillman2 жыл бұрын
100% agree. It's not 1978. Four-stroke dirt bikes have existed for quite some time now. There's ZERO reason for anyone to be starting on a two-stroke. It's FAR easier to learn solid off road riding skills without having to deal with a peaky two-stroke powerband as you do it. I'll second the TTR230 (or the CRF230F) as the best first bike for the vast majority of riders. Bulletproof. Tractor engines with a broad, flat powerband. Low enough that most people will be able to get both feet down, which instills a lot of confidence. Electric start. Fast enough for most single-track duties. Can you ride it on an MX track? Sure. Are you going to be launching triples on it? No, but that's not what a beginner bike needs to do. And as long as you don't destroy it, you'll be able to get most of your cost back outta it when you sell it in order to get something else. (Though, I'll never sell mine. It's still too fun to ride, even though I've got other higher performance bikes in my garage now.)

I’m over here like 😳 cause I ride a 450SX-F on trails, haha. But these bikes mentioned are great beginners. I started on a 300EXC and went up from there from a couple 250’s to more 450’s. I do however have both a 250 and 450.

Hi Kyle, I am thinking about getting into trail riding. I mountain bike now. Can you help me choose a dirt bike? I had a Honda CB220T street bike once (for whatever that's worth!) and took a couple classes on how to safely ride it. Can't remember anything! P.S. I'm also old (60) but in good shape. 5-9, 175 lbs. Can you help me? The Honda CRF250F is widely recommended but it sounds like the suspension on that is not very good at all ... otherwise that might be a great choice. It's looks slow and easy to maintain ... but it would sure to nice to have good suspension. Should I get a 2 stroke or 4 stroke?... the internet seems to have proponents of both. The Beta 200 RR has recently come up on my radar (with soft suspension) also the Yamaha WR250F looks awesome (with stiff suspension) but the WR looks too powerful and like it's made for very fast riding. I will be riding forest trails near Sun Valley Idaho. Tight twisty, sometimes rocky, single track! Great videos, thanks for any advice you may have! Jim

I would honestly be very interested in seeing you review a couple lesser known brands. As ive been looking into what to buy to upgrade from my 2002 ktm 300 exc I started looking into other brands and found a coupme I had never heard of but I am intrigued by. TM Racing, and Rieju. At this point I will probably stick to an austrian bike and get either a ktm or gas gas but I would love to see you review the TM and Rieju bikes with a comparison to the ktm bikes

Just bought my son 2023 ktm 150 xc-w. Never road before and made oval track in about two acres of yard. He’s at about 6 hrs on bike. Feel like I hear if I had dual cylinder engine and sounds like misfire and engine just isn’t snappy at low end like it was when first got it and lags a bit to get to high revs. Sounds better at higher revs. Could he have fouled plug due to learning and keeping revs low that quick. Any advice on something to check. I’ve been spray oiling filter while I ordered twin air buckets to do filters. Maybe I over oiled filter and then Im seeing about sensor going bad. I’ll take any advice you got. Love your channel. Im learning a lot from your videos
