For Mario maker, first of all YES you should play it, second you absolutely can play levels online with friends, you have to be switch friends and you have to download the level in advance (or you can choose a random level)

If you want to troll your friend while playing, go near him while holding the button Z-R (the big right button at the back of your controller) and press the Y button to carry him, then release the Y button to throw him so you can throw him off the course if that will be fun)

If you cap bounce after jumping, so you jump, throw cappy, dive onto cappy, you can press B for a rainbow spin to give Mario for air time to move, then you can dive again. This is used a lot in speedrun. TLTR: press b after one cappy bounce for rainbow spin

For Quin, in case he's reading: If you want to try Metroid, I'd suggest either Prime or Super Metroid. TBH Metroids 1 & 2 haven't aged that well, so Super Metroid is the oldest you should consider. That said, Super Metroid has aged great. It's jumps are a bit too spacey for modern standards, but it's still an excellent game all-around. (It was THE best Metroidvania in my books until Hollow Knight.) Metroid Fusion is also great. (Haven't tried the official remake for Metroid 2 myself, but the unofficial one, AM2R, is actually REALLY good, but idk if you do fan games.) Metroid Prime is another can of worms entirely. Surprisingly, the Wii version is decent with it's controllers, so it's a viable option if you don't have GC.
