Of the ones I've tried from your list I prefer Woodford. It has a nice cinnamon bite to it which is the type of thing I go for. I also just finished a bottle of Knob Creek. I enjoyed it but not as much as Woodford. Thanks for your videos.

I agree totally that Bookers should be on this list. Why should a beginner be required to drink a lower quality bourbon before advancing to a classic? The same with Scotch. My first Scotch remains a favorite, Laphroaig 10-Year Cask Strength. I've heard many say beginners should not start with an Islay...but it got me hooked! (My first bourbon was Old Grand-Dad 86 proof. Showing my age, huh?) Great video guys! Thanks.

Greetings from the home of the Derby, Four Roses 80 Proof for less than $20 a bottle is a fantastic beginner Bourbon and won the Peoples Choice Bluegrass Award here in "Bourbon Country" Kentucky. The lack of a burn and fruit and caramel butterscotch highlights make it the best beginner whiskey I've came across. My brother a Dr in Colorado was able to find it but it's not rare just largely unknown outside Kentucky. I don't work for "Roses" I do a you tube webcast "Kentucky Bourbon Traveler".

Being a Scotch-guy and just a few steps into the bourbon journey, to me your most controversial pick is the Jim Beam white label. Yes, you can get it in every supermarket (I should mention I live in central europe at this point), but it was responsible for me thinking "bourbon is rubbish" for a lot of years. Luckily I came across a Evan Williams 1783 (which is also dirt cheap) on a whisky fair, that made me realise that bourbon is not uninteresting at all. At this time Four Roses Single Barrel is my favourite, but I already have some unopened contenders on my shelf, waiting for me to get into a bourbon-mood. One more thing: Many US and Canadian youtubers complain about scotch being hard to get and expensive, while bourbon is relatively cheap and widely available. Well, it's exactly the other way around at my place. Really like your videos and your laid back, tongue-in-cheek approach. Have just subbed. Keep on entertaining me guys and cheers from Vienna/Austria.

All of your choices are good ones. I either started my bourbon journey with Maker's Mark or Elijah Craig 12 long before they had that fire. I came to bourbon after trying Canadian and then Scotch, and I enjoy most of it. I agree with all of your choices except the Booker's. For some reason the bottle I got a couple of years ago did not thrill me. Maybe I should try a bottle from another batch one of these years... Now, I know you guys love to hate Duke whiskey, but it's not really bad whiskey at all. The only terrible thing about it is the ninety dollar price tag. If it was being sold for $30 I would be drinking it daily!

I think the choices you list for beginners are good especially the Woodford, Buffalo Trace, & Eagle rare. I definitely would include the small batch 4 roses in there as it’s sweet and a real easy drinker. I disagree with the Jim Beam and Bookers. The bookers although flavorful tends to be a bit harsh for new palates and I’m not a fan of the JB unless there’s some Coca Cola in it! Thanks for the video gents

I used to think that Bourbon is all rubbish till i found Elijah Craig, my favorite one. what i like most about it is it's teakwood flavour and i bought like the 6th bottle or so. best bang for the buck and heads and shoulders above all that Jim or Jack rubbish. Btw Blanton's is also very good, imho

I agree with your recommendations. Booker's is my all time favorite Bourbon. Despite the high ABV, it goes down smoothly neat and with little or no alcohol burn, which is quite pleasantly surprising to the palate. I would also recommend Larceny as a beginner's bourbon. I enjoy Larceny neat, but it also works well as a mixer. It also has a great price point.

BTW Elijah Craig invented bourbon by shipping corn whisky, from Bourbon County, in charred barrels. The barrels were charred to clean and sanitize them, because they previously held fish. When the whisky arrived it took on the flavors and color from the barrel that we all love today.

Hi you two, I'm not sure if you read these comments but it's worth a try, I'm in the UK and normally drink Brandy as I have a sweet tooth (I also have a connection with France), I do drink Whisky as well as it was something my dad used to drink and I started my spirits drinking on Glenfiddich 12yo, I've been trying to find a very sweet (but not sickly false sweet) but also smooth Whisky (so that counts Jack Daniels out then), which I'm having trouble trying to find with Scotch, can you please recommend me a Bourbon that is creamy toffee sweet, smooth, not too spicy but still has a decent flavour and is pretty easy to get as the choice in the UK is pretty crap (the well known brands are easy to come by but not smaller makers), unless you're prepared to pay stupid amounts from a specialist Whisky retailer (which I'm not really prepared to do), I managed to find a bottle of Four Roses small batch but after a short time it seemed to develop this horrid pickled gherkin (cucumber) taste (you know the little green slices of pickle you find in a Big Mac), which put me off trying Bourbon again but I'm willing to give it another try, hope you can help please, many thanks Pete.

Like your channel. May not agree with all the choices for beginners. Have to say that Bookers may be a little to much for a beginner to really enjoy all the flavors coming at them. Not to say they should not try it, just that after someone has been enjoying bourbon for a while and learned more about the different flavors to notice. Then come back to some thing like bookers to then enjoy what it has to offer. Growing up in KY, bourbon is a staple to the idea of tradition and quality. Always love seeing people show there love for KY spirits. Keep up the good work on your page love it.

Thank you T and C. I guess I have a bit of an unfair advantage since I live in Louisville, KY. Lol. The market is getting insane. Booker's has gone from $46 to $76 in a year hear in KY. I enjoy the "Willett" taste. The Old Bardstown is fairly poor, and I was surprisingly disappointed with Rowan's Creek. The plain Willett pot-still Bourbon is excellent and almost refreshing. I appreciate the flavor profile promoted by Kentucky Bourbon distillers KBD. Not quite a love-it-or-hate-it distillery, but distinctive. It's funny how much I dislike JB White Label, yet love some of their other offerings, but if you are mixing Old-Fashioneds, or Manhattans, Old Grandad 114 can, quite simply, not be beaten. Thanks for the great work guys!

Pretty good list guys. When you limit your list to eight your always going to leave some good ones out as others have already indicated. Three of your choices are not bourbons that I like all that well neat or with a bit of water or ice, and those are Jim Beam white label, Evan Williams BIB and maybe Weller Special Reserve. I would have deleted those three and included Jim Beam Black label, Evan Williams 1873 and maybe Larceny instead of WSR. Of course that still leaves out a bunch of great bourbons, including 4 Roses that you mentioned. What about Old Grandad, Wild Turkey or Henry McKenna BIB, etc.? I like Booker's, but I'm not sure I would have included it in a beginner bourbon list. Instead of Booker's, I would have probably included Knob Creek Small Batch.

Bourbon Mash bills vary.... as stated, regulated corn minimum for bourbon is 51%, the variable is the secondary grain which is either Wheat or Rye. they all use malted barley for the 3rd grain.. the malted barley is the chemical reactor that converts starch to sugar

It is the youngest brand produced by the Buffalo Trace distillery. You might have mentioned Makers Mark, another wheater, which is produced in such quantity that it's available everywhere. And the 46 adds a lot of character while remaining enjoyable for a novice. Gotta agree with C about the mouth feel of Booker's. Love that sensation when the alcohol vaporizes. I wouldn't recommend starting there, but it's a great sipper for a lazy afternoon.

As far as bourbon is concerned Makers Mark is definitely not considered to be a harsh one. I think it's just because you're new to this type of spirit. Try it on ice or with just a dash of water and see if that helps. Or just give it another try neat, the bottle usually develops as you drink it down so many by half way you'll be loving it?!

Sounding a little sick there, Trenny! A nice lineup of whiskies. I'd put my top two of your lineup as the EC12 and Weller (though I'd spend the few more dollars around me to get the Antique). However, on pure beginner rankings I think Buffalo Trace is probably the ideal bourbon for its sheer drinkability/complexity... My subjective definition of a beginner bourbon being one that is cheap enough to mix while also good enough to sip on its own. I am also one of those people who would say Booker's is not a beginner's bourbon for a couple reasons 1) cask strength 2) price around $100USD now 3) pretty significant variability between bottlings. But it's typically damn good and I always have a couple of bottles on hand. :)

I actually agree about the Booker's. I couldn't believe the amazing flavour and the amount of things happening in my mouth when I first tasted it. It was the reason my journey into whiskey made a hard right from scotch, to bourbon in the early stages. If you take it slow, Booker's is great for a beginner. Just add a bit of water or ice if you have to the first couple times. Nothing beats the flavour explosion. Everyone that's tried it here at my place can't believe their mouths, either. Good luck with your videos. Good content so far. Sub'd.

Hi you both... Let me tell you something I learnt about how we Indians as a people drink Whisky! I grew up in India and I have concluded that it is something the British left behind in India mainly the Culture of Clubs in the Tea Gardens of the North East And the South, and also from the Army Officers' Messes all over India! What I am coming to is that 90% of Indians to this day have to mix Soda Water with their Whisky even if it is the most expensive single malt! And in addition to this, we tend to eat a lot of spicy hot snacks while we drink! Would love your comment!

@HiawoofaZ
@HiawoofaZ 7 жыл бұрын
Sebastian to be fair, the price hike was justified. It's worth every penny of $70, and they know it. The demand for it is way up now, so it was to be expected. I don't think it's arrogant, but I wouldn't pay $100 for it if they try to get up there. Every bottle of Tommy's Batch (2017-01) is sold out in my city in Kentucky. I grabbed 2. it is supposed to be really, really good this batch. even my home town only has 1 bottle left of that specific batch. I can't blame them for the price hike, and people are buying them more than ever.
@sebastian6481
@sebastian6481 7 жыл бұрын
The thing is it is $100 in Canada (and we don't get those unique batches like Tommy's Batch, Roundtable etc.). Countries that have government controlled liquor stores changed the price the day the new price for Bookers was announced. Over night I saw a $60 bottle become $100 because of a greedy marketing ploy (which they then backed out of in the US and said it will gradually over two years become $100) all because their rye got Jim Murray praise. Bookers is decent and like C implies in this video it's a good entry level barrel proof bourbon experience... for $60.
