LOL Laphroaig Quarter Cask was the first scotch I ever bought! Knowing nothing about scotch, I looked at all the offerings at the store and picked it at random. I've since tried several others but always come back to it as my favorite! Band-aids, wet wool and tar make a great beverage!

Thanks Tadashi Ishihara, Glenmorangie is the best selling Single Malt in Scotland, so that says it all! We debated putting it on the list and if we had done a top 10 it would have been in there for sure.

Laphroaig 10 was actually my second single malt, after Oban 14, previously coming from only drinking JW Black Label. My first dram was off-putting, and found it difficult to finish the glass. Thumbs up for you guys! I can perfectly agree with your choice of Laphroaig: My first contact with whisky was more or less by accident. I had a dram of Lagavulin 16 and my first thought: this can't be meant seriously... After the first shock i directly had a mortlach 16 and - found it wonderful. But my curiosity was awoken and i decided to buy my own single malts. Because especially the smoke had still been in my mind, with my third bottle i went for a Laphroaig 10. And what shall i say: i fell in Love with that stuff from the first moment. And Laphroaig has taken a permanent place in my personal whisky bar. Big like and greetings from Germany!

Although I did love Laphroaig on my first try, I find that it isn't the easiest to introduce to people who want to make the jump from blends to malts. I find that Caol Ila 12 is easier on the begginers palate as an Islay representative.Besides that, this is a great lineup! The next time someone asks me about malts, I will start to offer them Highland Park besides G'morangie, G'farclas, and Caol Ila/JWgreen that I often use to introduce.

What great selections for beginners! Why not put in the kicker at the end? So for real Beginners, I would suggest Dewar's, which I personally cannot stomach, Cragganmore, the most popular Scotch among the work-a-day Scottish (I can always drink this), Glenfiddich/Glenlivet, Speyside stuff I haven't bought in thirty-five years, bullseye with the Highland Park, which if there wasn't the internet and I could still be buying for cheap, and Balvenie 12 DoubleWood, which still feels to me like a endearing lost lover with such pleasant memories. Now, as I am not a beginner I have cases of Laphroaig stored away. I'm happy experts keep choosing Macallan as the "best" whisky available, which, if I would have bought the 18 when it was fifty dollars, I'd sell it all off now, and buy boutique Bowmores'.

I like the choice of the Laphroaig QC, but the Lagavulin 16yo would also be a nice peated whisky to start with. I don't like the Highland Park, had it and sold it. Macallan is too commercial and way to expensive. Black label: no idea. Aberlour: great scotch, from there go for the A'bunadh and the 16yo. My 5 beginner Scotches: - Aberlour 10yo - Lagavulin 16yo - Glenfarclas 15yo - Old Pulteney 12yo (and then straight for the 17yo) - Kilkerran 12yo Thanks for the video!

I think you guys could revise placing Johnny walker in the mix as it's a blend. You guys could incorporate an islay un peated like coal ila, and maybe a real Highland dram like old pulteney, with a real seaside brine taste. Also incorporate a lowland like auchentoshan... this would give you a wider idea of the different whisky's we have to offer. FYI Aberlour is pronounced Ah b loo ur.

Johnnie Walker Green Label. I still like it if I want something easy. Or Dalwhinnie 15 and Cragganmore 12. All have a bit of everything we love about whisky. A bit of fruit, a bit of sweet, malty, a hint of smoke, a bit of wood spiciness. If those do not work at all, give them a Laphroaig. If this doesnt work either, you can be sure there is more left for yourself. Some people dont like scotch. Some people are strange 😆

May I suggest you give your views on Scots whiskey the day after you have sampled all those bottles! Scotland and ireland has the softest water in the world, this is why their whiskey's are no neat, some with peat some unknown whiskeys can knock you off your feet, good to have a gid bottle near by when there's no heat sip it by the coal fire in your favourite seat, other whiskey's won't/cant compete, taste it and it will make you greet I have tasted them all, whiskey won't make you tall as I am still small, so it's not such a high drop when I fall But just like guinness it tastes better where it's made, Scots whiskey tastes better as it has aged don't buy the cheap shuff as it will make you mind rage, Scots single malt whiskey are for those who have aged sip it at your leisure as you turn the page, so just enjoy the flavour of Scotland as today it is the rage!

Good review guys, good choices. I would just replace the Laphroaig Quarter Cask with a sober Caol Ila 12. Also, you are talking about beginners so, I am introducing my wife to the world of Scotches as I believe she is quite mature to leave Malibu and Coke and taste something better. Auchentoshan 12 (18 if you want to spend a bit more) I believe deserve a spot on this beginners list. She loved it and I believe is a good entry level of whisky for whom is not familiar with heavy spirits. The triple distillation makes it easy to sip it but at the same time gives a very pronunced Lowland identification. Do you agree?

Laphroaig for beginners?! Please no! It is okay on the way down but it has a horrendous chemical aftertaste - somewhere between petrol and bleach. Lagavulin is THE Scotch to introduce people to heavy peat. Hell, for twenty years I hated Johnnie Walker Red, etc. because of the "smokey" taste... thankfully I was introduced to Lagavulin and now I'm dismayed when a Scotch isn't pure, golden, liquid smoke.
@trennyandcwhisky7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting ajn spam. Lagavulin is a great option also, which version would you suggest for a beginner?
@PaulBarendt7 жыл бұрын
The standard Lagavulin 16 year is a great introduction to peat (better than Laphroaig). Think it's out of the price range, though, at $80. Complex peat introduction - Ardbeg cask finishes like Uig. Peat perfection introduction - Octomore. Well, I pour my Octomore Virgin Oak... it's unique. To be fair, Quarter Cask is over $50, though...

Black label: no. If blended whisky is on the list go for teachers. Less price better quality at every level. Macallan: no. More expensive than other single malts at similar ages. Also non age statement whisky is really above the level of a true beginner because they have not developed a palate to determine quality. This is more for intermediate levels. Go for an age statement single malt with beginner forward qualities and are affordable like Glenfiddich 12, old piltney 12. Highland Park 12: perfect choice for a beginner. Laphroaig: never give this to a beginner. Suited for those who have been exposed to something similar to Highland Park 12 or maybe a Caol Ila. You risk alienating the beginner and they may not return to scotch. Beginners should start with age statement single malts and Branch out to blends from there so they can understand what is being tasted and nosed.
@trennyandcwhisky4 жыл бұрын
Love your ideas behind this... first off.. this video is quite old now. Whisky changes rapidly.. especially when it comes to price vs quality.. I would say black label at the time was at a better quality than Teachers... now black label has gotten worse and teachers better, with a nice middle layer of smoke. One of the reasons we included Laphroig Q.C. Is because it was significantly cheaper than the 10, 48% and from my personal experience one you never forget.. made me very interested in peated whisky. In fact, I’ve found over all five new whisky drinkers this dram has a significant impact on showing just how diverse scotch whisky can be. Thanks for your comment! Hope you enjoy more episodes of Trenny and C, Cheers!!

Hey guys, just came back from the liquor store with a new bottle of Scotch. I found your video and was surprised to see the bottle I bought on your beginner list. It's the Laphroaig. I have to wait until I get home from work to taste it. How do you think it compares to a Lagavulin 16 or a Bowmore small batch? Those are the only 2 peaty ones I've had and they really grew on me. I'll let you know my thoughts once I've sampled it. Take care
@trennyandcwhisky7 жыл бұрын
i think this version of Laphroiag is really nice for a non age statement. It's bottled at a higher strength, it's got some nice medicinal, tar kind of notes. It's quite dense, i wouldn't say that it's one specifically for beginners, I enjoy this one a lot. it's a good showcase for something that have evolving character. The peat is strong on first opening of the bottle. Laga 16 is glorious stuff, but for the price point this one is a good intro to heavily peated Scotch. - Trenny

Laphroaig doesnt belong on anyone's beginner list BUT...I understand why you were adding it to get Islay into the mix. I would say Laphroaig 10 tho, imo.

Arbeg 10 yr is a classic. There's a reason why reviewers all over the world consider it one of the best peated whisky ever. We love it. The underlying whisky even if it weren't peated is very well made stuff. There's just the right amount of sweet and salty vs. smoke and honey. it has an age statement, bottled at a higher strength, non chill filtered and natural colour. Not to mention that the price has remained reasonable over the last couple of years. Cheers and thanks for the comment. - Trenny

Yes but it also has a range of smokiness and char flavour, from campfire to road tar.

I don't like Laphroaig because of it's iodine taste and smell. Who likes the smell of a hospital? Also there is nothing subtle about it and somehow I can't get behind the idea that just because something is extreme, it's automatically good.

I think a lot of people share your opinion. I'd say it's about 50/50 love it or hate it.

That's a fair assesment, there is however lots of sweet undertones to this one. I'd be interested in tasting a non- peated Laphroaig. - Trenny

Man encouraging people to just dive in at the deep end with Laphroaig because then they'll learn whether they love or hate it just strikes me as more machismo than good advice. There's plenty of peated scotch for a reasonable price that can introduce you to that world without running the risk of turning you off it. Ledaig 10 year is really affordable and "wonderfully peated" as their tagline goes, Lagavulin 8 year is an even better Islay that is not much more expensive than Ledaig. Taliskers not my cup of tea but is probably worth a mention. And if you really want strong peat the Ardbeg 10 is a better whiskey than many brands three times it's age and well cheaper than the Laphroaig half cask. You could at least have a little mercy and advise a drop of water boys. Also Dura's a good starter whiskey, it's relatively cheap and uncomplicated and I'd take it over your Macallan any day. Good shout on the Highland Park though.
@trennyandcwhisky7 жыл бұрын
One thing I definitely agree on is that the word "Machismo" needs to be used more often! Otherwise good advice Sven, we just happen to be those guys in the deep end with water wings on! Cheers. -C

Good review... great Scotches... BUT... best beginner scotch??? I would say they all would be fine Intermediate level scotches... except for the Laphroaig... jeeze!! Better beginners, IMHO... Dewars or Chivas, base blends... then nice upgrade to Teacher's... THEN to your good choices... THEN, if peat is enjoyed... up to the Laphroaig.. then, to the Lagavulin 16 and ta-da!!! Highland park 25. :-)

Great video. The first time I tried Laphroaig (10), I was almost scared after hearing the various reviews. Well at one of my wife and I's favorite bar/ restaurants, I tried it. Yes it was Smokey, bandaidy, burnt tire like and even some welcome sweetness. Long story short, it was not scared to drink but as you say, very memorable. It is my favorite scotch to date. These days I like to keep less expensive blends around due to cost. Johnny walker Black is just plain consistently good. J&B is nice but weak in general. If it was only a bit richer...

Unfortunately good whiskies in Brazil are super expensive. For an example: a Glenfiddich 18y, 750ml will cost you about 600-700 bucks. For a parameter, the min. salary for our country is almost 900 bucks. Meanwhile, in the US, the same scotch is at 100 bucks. =( Even the Black label, which used to cost around 99 bucks, nowadays is up to 200 bucks. Unbelievable.

Theres no way that Laphroaig should be on the list. Its more likely to put beginners off Scotch forever. In fact I wouldn't necessarily recommend any of those as beginner Scotch's. Maybe Highland Park at a push. I would recommend Glenfiddich, Glenmorangie, Glenfarclas 10 and a couple of decent blends.
@danemmerich67755 жыл бұрын
Why does it bother me when you guys say Whisky all the time when IT IS SCOTCH!! I would think this is the perfect time to say SCOTCH! Since they are all from Scotland. Maybe the Lavagulin 8 is a good starter instead of the Laphroig (punch in face) ? Just thinking out loud. Great Job guys!
Laphroaig - that's my scotch ! Once you get past the iodine, it's off to the races with rich smoke floating on butter. Great idea to list as a beginners scotch because you might as well cut-to-the-chase ! LOL

There are actually better beginners Scotch Single Malts costing far less than your selection and giving the newbie a much better Single Malt flavour and regional education. *Deanston Virgin Oak* A true craft Southern Highlands whisky, Non-Chill Filtered, Natural Colour, bottled at a high 46.3% abv. A perfect starters Scotch giving you a mouth full of malt barley creamy natural wood smoke caramel flavours. You can also experiment with adding a few drops of water and seeing how the character changes. *Tomatin Legacy* An intense combination of Highland Malty fruitiness and heavily charred white American Oak wood spiciness *Tomintoul 10* A light fruity floral Speysider. *Glenmorangie 10* A Northen Highlander. Syrupy peaches, oranges, melon fruity sweetness with a malty oaky spicy base. *Glen Moray Classic* A delicious light fruity floral introduction to malty biscuity melt in the mouth Speyside single malt. *Glen Moray 12* A more mature version of the excellent Glen Moray Classic for only a few shekels more. *Bowmore Small Batch Bourbon Cask* A gentle and mild introduction to the wonderful world of Islay peated malts and a rock bottom price. Slightly earthy smoky, coastal, sea spray, fresh seaweed but combined with a sweet maple syrup American Oak Bourbon cask. *Auchentoshan American Oak* A good all rounder and great white wine fruity Lowland malt whisky with a dominance on fresh American White Oak Ex-Bourbon barrels.

Go with Bowmore Small Batch. According to the box it has a "gentle peaty smokiness." I find it very fresh with citrus hints especially lemon. I also just tried the 12 yr and the 15 yr. Both are more complex, and equally delicious. The peat in these is not overpowering, and very sublime.
