definitely getting this one, currently using a 4x drill and it's still good. probably getting the raw hammer solid as well. when I was a conventional lefty I always used the low-end stuff , now that i am 2 handed, the low end stuff work even better.

Enjoyed the video Packy! Drilling your own ball was great visual. While you did leave many 8 pins I did not see them keep company with 6 pin at the same time. I remember way back in the day of polyester balls when urethane came out was the reactive resin of the day being stronger. Love you game but am biased being left handed as well but not two hander and OLD GUY!

I've been a dedicated Storm/Roto user for the past decade or so. In my sport shot league over the years, my teammates all have the Purple Hammer in their bags and make it look incredible. I can see why it's one of the most popular balls ever. I think with this rerelease, I'm going to be buying something outside of Storm for the first time in quite awhile. I passed on it back then and I regret it. So many have had great success with this ball, so I'm excited to see what this ball does for me!

Bowled 6 games on house with an original purple hammer that starts with a 7 in the serial number. Also had a Storm Trend with me. I stayed plus but saw just how crappy downlane it got. I learned firsthand why I will probably *NOT* throw it for league, ever. But I will have it in the bag in case I hit a sports tourney and the whole field decides to throw urethane.

I had several Hammers over the years. The purple one was by far my favorite. Overall favorite balls were the AMF Ninja and Triton Elite which ironically was purple also. I wore both of them out.

So... I throw very similar to you - which is an awesome point of reference. When you say you like that it needs oil and will hook a lot - I get that... but what urethane out there would you recommend that would NOT bite so hard - for shorter patterns.. etc. I would love a urethane that also does not bite quite as much, just to have in the bag. Current "weaponry" is Fatal Venom (primary) Jackal Ghost (for high oil) and recently got a UC3 Rubicon which behaves a lot like this purple hammer. Thanks for the advice, I just subscribed!

When I was able to bowl I had a Burgundy Hammer that hooked like all hell. I needed oil on the lanes because it just hooked very hard when there was not much oil on the lanes.

So, from my understanding, the reason why the Purple Hammer is so good is that it balances/manages the front and the back of the lane better than pretty much anything else out there (at least urethane-wise)? If not, what does the ball do that makes it so good?

When other urethane hook early they stop, the thing that makes the purple hammer so good is you can move inside and it won’t hook early and go forward, it will hook early and then keep bookie. This is why even playing right in the video I was leaving 8 pins!

Picked this up and bowled a 189 first game with it at the house. Needless to say i was pleased (as a two hander) at how obvious it was where i needed to adjust board wise. Still gotta get used to it but definitely no regrets day one

Hey! it's still in my bag and I still use it every session (mostly as a spare ball or if lane conditions aren't suiting my proton physx). If your lanes are super oiled it may be a little more difficult to pinpoint where/how you wanna throw this thing, but it still somehow got right on track right before the pins. great ball for me! expect this thing to either make or break you 😄 happy bowling @@dontswin

Can you chalk up the motion difference in surface change? I see the box finish is 2000 sanded perhaps your older ball has taken on some surface changes and softened it up over time? CtD shows the lane will polish up to approximately 3-4000 over 3 games which smooths out most bowling balls by my experience.

I'm ancient. I worked in the pro shop of the bowling alley built by the owner of the original Hammer company (Faball) 30 years ago. I wasn't great (basic 200 average house shot guy), but the original red Hammer was my go to, followed by one of the original prototype Xcalibur reactives. Glad to see the ball (if not the company itself) is still having success.

I loved my purple Hammer but what I can't figure out is when you search the history of the purple Hammer it shows a release year of 1995 and listed as a purple pearl, but there was a solid purple that released in 1991-1992 and is the version I purchased in early 1992. I have never been able to find any information regarding this actual first version and have started to wonder if it was a one-off test ball that they only had out for a year and then rereleased it as the true configuration of the purple pearl in 1995. I am unable to have an opinion on this myself as I quit bowling in the fall of 1993. I also went through a rough patch in my life and ended up throwing out all of my bowling equipment, so I no longer even have this ball along with a blue and red hammer, a pearl U2, and 2 teal rhino pros (1 yellow lettering and 1 purple lettering). I do however have the receipt for the purchase of my purple hammer that was in a bunch of stuff my mom kept and I was given just the other day.

My 2 year old purple hammer is awesome! I’d like to get a new one with a totally different drilling but just haven’t figured out what drilling to use. Want it to have a different look but concerned I’ll be disappointed and wish I didn’t drill it so different. In Dual Angle Layout System, Once you determined the Center of Grip, As a 2-handed bowler, where do you place your pin (center of middle and ring finger). or how many inches away from the Center of Grip do you place your pin (center of middle and ring finger)? It'll be nice to see a comparison between both purples. Just make sure both are at clean coverstocks and the same surface otherwise it won't be a fair comparison. Also, I have the old one but I can't throw it much because the surface I bowl on is very high friction and the purple simply hooks at my feet. Shinning it up just makes it weird and inconsistent.

I was able to use my Purple Hammer with Axis Weight layout at 360/1000 skip-sand on the 45 foot Rome Pattern by playing up first arrow. I am a Classic Full Roller with only 145 rpms and 12 mph ball speed, yet I was still able to shoot a 229 clean game with the Purple. The Purple Hammer is the greatest ball ever made!

@@TheHouseBowling I got my new Brunswick Purple Hammer and I must admit it is a "very" different ball from the original. It is much earlier and straighter and rolly. The original is longer and more continuous. The new Purple Hammer rolls more like a solid than a pearl. This is not a bad thing! I used it for the first time last night in my Sport League on Eiffel Tower and was able to average 180 for four games with it! It is the first ball I have used since I started my Sport league that actually made me feel like I was in control of my fate rather than a victim of the pattern. Also the new Purple is very pretty. Deep purple color with wonderful swirls and high contrast engravings. Truly a visual upgrade from the original. I made be my new favorite ball of all time...

Yes purple hammer is arguably the best of the bunch, it will hook more than a pitch black earlier than a pitch purple, and be much weaker than a widow!

A black chaos for strong solid coverstock and my web tour solid ( that just cracked last night at league) with the pin 1inch off my dad's pap , with magenta urethane hammer, black hammer ( the State side one not overseas) , blue pearl hammer, faball blue hammer , Columbia 300 blue beast and the original black widow urethane and now the new purple hammer. Your are right I love my urethane balls ALOT.

Obviously your not a Storm guy, and they have different covers, but how do you think this would compare to the Phaze2 as far as versatility?

There's no way to really compare them and it's not a company thing. One is a pearl urethane and the other a benchmark symmetrical reactive. The shapes are just not comparable enough to say.

Both would be usable pieces in the bag that do different things, the purple would hook much earlier and the Phaze 2 would get through the fronts a give a much sharper reactive shape down lane!

The balls themselves, like gunz said, are not comparable in terms of shape or motion, but to answer your question regarding versatility, they are quite similar. The phaze 2 (which i have 3 of) can be used on quite literally almost any pattern. The purple Hammer is also extremely versatile, but it typically taps out when the pattern is too long. I personally have used the purple Hammer (which i have 3 of as well) on every length 44 and shorter. The thing with urethane tho is that you have REALLY understand ball motion to know when it looks good and when it’s not the best option. So the are both extremely versatile, useful on a lot of different patterns, but just in different ways

I thought it was the ratchet, but that seems to have come out much later. Oh well, is not a big deal. Oh a separate note, I'm trying to find a ball that will work for me when the oil starts to dry up, around frame 15 on league nights, that will help me keep a shot profile closer to my ebonite destiny pearl for longer, Rather than having to move to my backup T-zone line. Would the ball in this video be a suitable candidate for that? If not, do you have any recommendations? P.s. I bowl one handed, and I don't use inserts.

Try and move and stay ahead of it before the oil changes and you split try and move before then! Ask a righty what they do!! Generally moving inside a bit and slowing the speed down is a common move to start with!

Do you give ball advice? I'm trying to get back into practice after 30+ years. Back in the 80s-90s I averaged low 2-0s (maybe 206 best season). I used to throw the ball very hard with lots of revs. Good strike ball, a little erratic with spares, typical teens-20s bowler I guess. I used a black urethane AMF Angle, a polyester Columbia yellow dot, and an ancient black hard rubber three dot for really dry lanes. I feel like my release isn't too much different, I still get some revs on the ball, but I can't throw it nearly as fast and I'm getting a little too much hook. I never much felt the need for a soft extra-hook ball (e.g., a yellow angle) because I'm fine with just moving right for oily lanes. As a matter of physics, only the terminal angle into the pocket really matters, so if there is alot of oil I usually just moved right and started rolling straight up the three to five boards. What would you recommend as a first new ball for an old man, something like a medium hardness urethane? Does that purple hammer you're using fit that description or is that more of a soft urethane? Also I notice alot of people seem to be going with 15 pound balls instead of 16, is there a reason?

@@dontswinI've been going a little bit, and I'm discovering that the big challenge now is trying to regain a smooth approach. We old-timers all learned the approach that ends in a long opposite-foot slide, but that doesn't always work very well when you're a bit older and heavier. Even as a 20-year-old I struggled a bit with the slide, probably because despite being very fit at the time I was still 200+ pounds. To me this makes some of the pretty weird-looking modern approach styles more understandable, because they skip the difficulty with the slide. I'm thinking back in the day, one of the top pros was Mark Roth, and if you remember he pretty often didn't slide but rather did a little hop at the end of his approach. He probably had difficulty with the slide as well (I met him once, he was a fairly big guy). That workaround was certainly successful for him! Anyway, still working on that, I'm going to just buy a spare ball for now and get my timing and approach worked out before trying to select a good strike ball.

Your correct, I always worked that slide specially with a 5 step approach. When I was little like 15/+ I used a very short approach. Now my legs are fairly long cause I'm 6'2" so my stride is longer and very powerful at the release. I can't bowl thinking about many little steps any more. I am a little apprehensive using this new purple hammer ball for the first time. This is definitely gonna take some time@@njmikeche5575

@@TheHouseBowling I’m also lefty 2 hander new to urethane and my PAP is 4 3/4 over 2 1/4 down. Would this still be a strong layout for my specs? What would a weak layout be? Nobody has a clue about no thumb layouts around me so I’m forced to do my own research. Any help/advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for the great content new sub here

Why a Purple hammer urethane though ? I have a Black Widow 2.0 & even an origial 2003 widow 1,0 that hooks, dozens of balls hoof even moving right (or left) why is urethane any better ?? Ith my new 2.0 Widow i can stand in front of the ball return 45 bd or 25 bds left of center & hook to pocket (im the 67 yr old 2 hander that sent email about coming to Columbus Ohio for $. Of course the new season has started now - lol)

@@TheHouseBowling Definitely a mix of both! It's great to see the different leaves since they show how the ball shapes up on misses too and much room to the pocket we might expect (given a similar condition). I meant that comment as a compliment to the ball actually, as it kept driving so hard through the pins to keep leaving those 8 pins 😂 Really rare to see that tbh, especially on Urethanes! Much easier to manipulate a ball to finish flatter than to get it to drive harder so this ball is definitely a winner (as we all expected lol)

Drilled it just like my best purple that I had...strong layouts give me a smoother motion and helps the urethane ball pick up every time!

@@TheHouseBowling I only did it for 3 months, and then messed up my elbow and had to switch hands while I let it heal. The extra revs were fun to play with, but not having a coach in the area for it meant I was better off just sticking with one handed.
