The bowflex dumbbells are a safety hazard. I have a set of these adjustable Bowflex 41 kg dumbbells. During recent chest press workout, the heaviest disk suddenly came flying down towards my face which I dodged by some miraculous neck reflex. Upon inspection - the disk is held up by tiny, plastic coated ledge, which sheared off completely and released the disk from the handle! Have contacted Bowflex and attempted to force an inspection and reconsider their design but they were completely uninterested and only offered me a discount for my next dumbell (what a sick a joke).

I used to stop by a big fitness store often and they had Bowflex and Powerblock dumbbells on the show floor, as display models and at least one of the Bowflex bells were always broken but never the Powerblock ones. I went on craigslist and bought a pair of the old square 90# ones and never had a problem with them. I prefer black painted steel because I know how to touch that up as opposed to urethane costing or plastic. If a weld broke, and it never has!, I could fix that too unlike plastic. I think Bowflex dumbbells became popular by being out pretty early and looking more like traditional dumbbell as compared to Power blocks. Some people can't get over the block thing even though they work for almost all dumbbell exercises just fine. I worry a little about the longevity of some of the newer dumbbell systems...even some metal ones have plastic inside. I never drop bells, never have but if I did I'd trust Powerblocks more than the others I've seen. Powerblocks just seem like the safe choice to me. Of course Coop and his detailed reviews may convince you some of the new ones are good too. I've only handled Powerblocks and Bowflex and of course solid and plate bells...

It’s a u shape so if you have the upside facing you on bench press even if it fails it won’t fall on your face. Also if you rack them into the housing incorrectly all the time eventually over time it will deteriorate the plastic faster. Takes more maintenance but it’ll last you if you take care of them
@jayzjek Жыл бұрын
@@swimming8158 i encourage you to try what you propose and you will quickly find it's "impossible" to do in practice. The very fact that it's a u shape means that the center of gravity is below the handle and so the dumbbell will always rotate towards the slit facing upwards. That is unless you've got stronger wrists than pecs.

I've had the Powerblocks 2 separate times (When they first came out, I moved, and now again for the past 5 years) and the only issue at all would be the single dumbbell moves like front goblet squats and over the head tricep work like skullcrushers. The best real dumbbell feel that can get heavy are the Ironmasters; they are the semi-screw in and expensive. Those Nordic ones are pretty cool, but expandability is important. I'm a small guy and can exceed those weights doing presses and DB pulls. But I guess this supplements a rack too.

It’s all preference. I got the Powerblocks Exp 90s, Core 50s & Bowflex 552. All have pros and cons. Each great for certain workouts. That’s why I decided to keep them all. My rank is Powerblocks first, cores two & the legendary bowflex three

I almost got the Nordic ones as a first adjustable pair, but I kept seeing reviews with the same point of failure (at the locking point of the primary adjustment) with a very short warranty not covering it and no replacement part options without paying to ship back to them. Then I saw your recent Snode review and decided to go with their sub-brand LOYO 50. Basically, it's a slightly less durable version of AD50 with 9lb increments, but very affordable and still droppable at most angles. They shipped quick in incredibly durable packaging.. The weight steps are large, but so far so good! Thanks for the reviews!

buy a pair of cap dumbell handles for $15, a 1 in micro plate set of 4x 2.5lbs and 4x 1.25lbs for $40, and a set of main plates 4x 10lbs for $60. You now have a pair of dumbells that can be adjusted up to 30 pounds by 2.5lb increments. This is a total of $115. Quick-select dumbells of the same price AND the 2.5lb increment only go up to like 15 pounds. Think of it, if you're jumping from 25 lbs you use for curls and going down to 15 lbs for your rear delt flys, the time you take to adjust it is also letting you recover for the next movement. You don't require high speed adjustability. "BuT wHaT aBoUt DrOp SeTs??" Do myoreps instead, pick a weight that lets you initially do 12-15 reps with really slow eccentrics. You'll live.

I have the Powerblock elite 90’s and love them. But your one point about the Nordic track having increments that occasionally jump 5lbs instead of 2.5lbs is the same with the Powerblocks. That’s always been a complaint of mine. It’s 25lbs-30lbs no 32.5 option and does that all the way up 35-40 45-50 etc… my Issue is they advertise it as consistent 2.5lb increases which it is not. Yet I seldom hear anyone bring this up.

The Nordics change quickly and are good for having as an alternative to the Ironmasters, interleaving sets, etc. The only minor grip I have with the Nordics is that it's difficult to tell which lever direction is for 2.5 vs 5# until you pick them up. Other than that they have been great. Fwiw I have been interested in the Powerblocks for a while but kept getting put off at the price, availability, model confusion, and cost of the upgrades. Maybe someday but for now the Ironmasters & Nordics cover what I need.

Adaptabell is definitely not cheap. So yes, prices went up since this video but even then lets just look at what it costs to get enough for a pair of dumbbells. 50 dollars for a pair of Grips, then its 120 for a pair of 25 pound plates (x2 for 2 grips) -- for 45 pound set is 200, then you'd have to buy the higher weight capacity grips for 150. So on the cheapest side you can get a set of 20 pounders for 190 dollars plus tax or 50 pounders for 290 dollars (50 for handle, 120 for 2 sets of 25 lb plates). Want the whole set? 150 for handle, plus 160 lb set (x2) that is 950 dollars. That's insane. Yes you can curate your weights but it is not cheaper and in fact more expensive. I'm sure they're nice.

But they go to 90lbs! I got them pre-covid used for $350 with the stand. I was in a similar boat. I was using the 552’s then upgraded to the 1090’s. Never had a single issue after using them for years. I even bought them used. I never dropped them. They served their purpose and I knew what I wa signing up for. That being said I did experience some FOMO with these other styles of less bulky quick adjust dumbbells. The bulkiness of the bowflex finally got old to me. I switched to octabells(nuobells) and they are everything they’re advertised to be in terms of why they’re better than bowflex. I don’t know if I’d ever go back to bowflex but I also didn’t exactly have an issue with them. Also at this point I think bowflex has got complacent with their products. Coop: you were hardly fair to the spinlocks. You might have pointed out (since some people completely new to weight lifting will likely see this) that you can buy all the 10 or 12.5 weight plates you want on Craig's list and load those this things up well past the weight of the introductory set. You might also have noted that you can buy spinlock handles quite cheaply that are longer than those and will allow you to load up a lot of weight. (Years ago, when I was starting out and did not have an Oly barbell set, I used to load up a pair with 25 lb. plates and do deadlifts with them. ) You could also point out that you can use the same plates on barbells (had 295 on a "standard" 7' bar with no problem) and plate loaded devices.

Are these prices for a pair or just one dumbbell? Because I’m a 14 year old trying to get into weight lifting and wanna do so at home and don’t have too much money on me

I haven’t tried the norditrack ones but I would say powerblocks is more durable than that but it seems the norditrack ones has more of a real dumbbell like feel from the looks of it?

9:38 Is that 350 for two or 350 each cause 700 for two you're way better off spending another 150 for higher end ones that go up to 70 or 80 lbs
