1983?? The design of that thing is WAY ahead of its time! That's honestly impressive. Remember what factory car stereos sounded like in the 80s? For $80, this thing would have actually made a distinct difference with the kind of music most people were listening to at the time. Major Wife Approval Factor as well, for folks that are into that sort of thing. Easy to hide away, not overbearing. Really cool piece of lost history there!

I agree, that was way ahead of its time. my first thought when i saw it was the bose wave radio. i bet you were the cool kid on the block with the 8 track radio if you had that sub. I kinda want one, even though I have 2 8's and a 10 in my truck. lol

Those Japanese, even their low power stuff was unusually well made. I still rock a mid 80's Panasonic combo unit on the back deck, 3 glorious watts per channel but the tuner pulls in every station and it has a soft touch tape deck. They may have made some cheap stuff but it was never junk. That and being outside for 10 years hasn't hurt it a bit.

So to Get to the 4 Real / I was sporting a Mustang AM FM with a cassette player that had NO rewind function . Also had a set SPARK-O-MATIC 6in round doubles in the doors and 6in ovals in the back . I also had a China made 10 lever equalizer that flashed 2 green pulse bars with the beats . I was SO COOL . Those speaker lasted about a season and crumbled in the California sun . I recently installed the 6 x 3 pioneer wx010 powered sub in my car, and was floored at how much bass that tiny unit put out. It pulls so little power that the instructions (and crutchfield confirmed) that you are to power it via fuse tap. Fits under the dash, easiest install ever. I had no idea that small subs were a thing back in the day.

Here's the thing. Yeah, it was 180$ on Amazon. There's a whole pile of combo amp and low profile subs available for 50$ less, and larger, and probably louder. But, I'm not amplifying my doors and rear deck. I put decent JBL speakers that took lower RMS in, just because I wasn't interested in going all out with a system again. The pioneer unit is expensive, but it's also adding just enough more low range and sound quality, and isn't drowning everything else out. So in my case, it was a really great option to finish out upgrading sound. I'm saying all this as someone who's had a couple really nice, loud, multi amp systems over the years and generally have high standards for the SQ aspect.

Impressed as to how much effort was put into "trying" to make the sub/enclosure as realistic as possible. The magnet was impressive too. Funny the tuning was around 140Hz, but the filter buttons were at or below it! LOL. Surprised that even with those 2 large amp chips, probably operating in bootstrap mode only did around 10 watts rms into 4 ohms. I was hoping to see the massive power draw using your Fluke remote "amp clamp"! You would have had to wrap the power wire around the clamp twice to attempt to fool the ammeter to get it off zero amps! LOL. That was good.

Probably the best operating item was a 15" dual-wound home subwoofer with an adequate speaker, crossover and a decent enclosure. Not audiophile grade but it filled my teenage bedroom plenty well to rattle shelves and be heard outside in the back yard with my window closed. Today I still have a few items in storage but I'd doubt they are of any use.

Nostalgic factor from the 80’s is a 8/10. Some dancing LEDs would have definitely made it 10/10. I’m sure a modern class D amplifier with modern high excursion mini-woofer works blow this out of the water but you have to remember this in the context of early 80s

It would be fun to get on Parts Express and find a nice replacement for it with a nice rubber surround and heck it probably have better specs than this speaker so it would be fun to retest it! 👍👍

reminds me of one time i found an old set of 90s computer speakers in a trash can including a similarly hilarious 3" subwoofer. wouldnt say it was designed to really add bass but just add SOME kind of low end for more warmth.

For how old that thing is, I knew that the surround was either going to be rotted or break apart as soon as it played. 25 watts is low enough and when I saw that the dyno only said 8, I couldn’t hold my breath anymore from laughing. Not even Dick Riculous could say anything about it. Lol

Surprisingly enough I have a Dodge 6x9 that's supposedly 15`w 4ohms and it's indestructible for my receivers. I've put it through 100w and it still won't blow.

You can refoam it or find a good replacement from parts express. Their dayton audio series are pretty good cheap replacements. I got a couple of 2" vifa drivers and a couple of 2" passives and built a mini tube out of PVC pipe and it jams louder than a JBL flip speaker with the same design.

I love the wool sound pad loosely shoved in the box. We know big bass is possible with the right small driver and an insulated, ported enclosure. Just look at some of the great little speakers BOSE has made over the years.

That foam surround can replaced. They have them on eBay. I've replaced a pair on some 1st generation Paradigm Atoms and a pair of vintage Realistic Nova-14 speakers and they all turned out nicely. Not sure if you've re-foamed speakers before, but it's really not hard to do. I could do it for you if you want.

We had a computer speaker setup that had a 2-3” “sub” in a wooden vented enclosure around 6x6x6”. You could hear the bass (100-500hz is my guess)upstairs when playing a NASCAR game.

I had one similar to these back in the day. But it was 250 watts and had a 6.5" woofer before they were cool. Lol. It was called a "Power Mouse" 🐀🐀🐀. It was made with wood instead of plastic though. And had a nice t-line style box with the amp and everything built in. Had led lights that flashed like a vu meter. Lol.

yeah 1987 i had a cerwin vega 12inch woofer in trunk of my bmw323i E21, at that time there was often a gas tank behind the seat so the woofer was mounted on a square board with aboat a 5 inch hole with a tube that you were suppose to route up to the shelf. Kind of open air but through a tube. Still got an old amplifier on the shelf that was pretty good Rodek R2180A
