Definitely worth a watch now that systems are getting more powerful and power hungry.
@mithikx2 жыл бұрын
I switched my build over to then Torrent Nano and a NH-D15 cooler. If you fit an exhaust fan to the rear of the case there's no way to get the NH-D15's 140mm fan to fit if it's towards the rear I/O unless that exhaust fan is really slim. While it is possible to mount the outer fan of the NH-D15 to the other side (towards the 24-pin ATX power on the mobo), the ability to fit the included 140mm fan to the cooler may vary based on the motherboard. For me it did not work as my fan contacts the 24-pin ATX power plug for the motherboard and would have sat too far out to close the case, instead I mounted a 120mm fan which was small enough to still have the glass panel close up; stuck with a Noctua fan (A12x25). While it may or may not affect thermals I can just about barely get away with it using the Gigabyte Z490I Aorus ULTRA and an i9-10850k, the former kind of being known to run the CPU hot under stock settings. With my CPU peaking at 91C in a sustained benchmark setting (which isn't ideal but for real world use I'm still in the safe margins in my use case). But I'm kind of pushing it with my parts choice, the NH-D15 in this case with something like a Ryzen 7 or i7 will do just fine IMHO even with a mild OC.

*My only COMPLAINT about this case...* The PSU has to suck in hot air that's directly above the CPU cooler. If they'd made the shroud under the PSU solid on the bottom, above the CPU cooler, then put INTAKE on the shroud closer to the front they could have designed this to use cooler air being blown from the FRONT of the case without changing the look of the case much. So move the SHROUD intake from bottom to the side that faces the front of the case. That's it (and leave enough gap under the PSU fan). That would make the PSU fan run much quieter (will vary by the PSU model)... honestly not sure how great air to the PSU is if the CPU cooler is close as the CPU fan is directed towards the rear. Obviously you're getting air flow to the PSU but it's not optimal thus in some situations the PSU will be much louder than necessary.

I'll probably going to modify it a little, especially to fit the living room (color) theme/scheme, but especially for watercooling, I see it could fit two rads plus pump pretty easy in there, but will probably first run on air to see temps, because front fan is pretty big and back has nice ventilation... Maybe would utilize a simple 3d print duct to remove the graphics cards hot rising air and channel it away from cpu intake to back outlet "mesh"

@10:37 I'd recommend removing that exhaust fan at the rear of the case behind the CPU cooler. Unless the airflow is synced up exactly, that will cause air to bounce off of it and recirculate back into the case. In this design, if it were possible I'd actually move the rear exhaust fan to the bottom of the rear plate to exhaust the area around the GPU, where there's no directed airflow. However, that would clash with the GPU... With the rest of the airflow design - I think this Nano case is better than the Compact. The Nano really uses the bottom intake for the GPU because the large front intake fan 's airflow is not flowing beneath the GPU... though that tight space around the GPU itself means there's no real exhaust at the bottom of the case (as I noted above). The Compact has an issue in that there's a large volume between the GPU and the bottom of the case with the front lower fan pushing air across it. Meaning that you will have less effective airflow from the front of the case because you are not constricting the flow of air from front to back, you reduce the pressure across the fan axis due to airflow entering from the bottom of the case. If it had been my design, I would have left the bottom of the case as solid.
@Dan-bh8jd2 жыл бұрын
But the Torrent compact can fit 2 additional 140mm fan on bottom
@Eternalduoae2 жыл бұрын
@@Dan-bh8jd Yeah, and that's not a great configuration. The point of cooling is to move the maximum amount of cooling medium (air, water, glycol mix, etc.) through a system which can be used to absorb energy from the system in question, usually through some sort of heat exchanger (e.g. a heatsink). TL;DR - too many fans decrease overall system performance. If you ran this system in a configuration with two fans at the front and two at the bottom (ignoring the back for a moment), you are not in an optimal configuration. Fans work by creating a pressure differential across their working axis, which is why static pressure fans have more of a "scoop" design in order to create a stronger pressure differential. This means that the fans in the centre of the case, pushing air in from the bottom mesh are creating a region of higher pressure due to not only their drawing in of air but also due to that air hitting the solid body of the graphics card. This region of higher pressure will cause the front fans to have lower efficiency - meaning that they will be required to work at a higher rpm in order to move the same volume of air across them. If you visit the Fractal Torrent Compact webpage, you will see an animation which shows the airflow effects of the two front fans (and also why no rear exhaust fan is necessary). However, this animation does not take into account the air drawn in (ambient chimney style) from the bottom mesh in the case. It assumes too much efficiency and lack of turbulence as a result of this "cross action" airflow. Which is why I said it would have made more sense for Fractal to actually just block off the bottom of the case... I actually have a blogpost covering all this but this channel automatically nukes any links in comments. If you want to search it's "hole in my head" at blogspot.

I was starting to regret getting the nr200p until I saw your comment 🤣. It does not look that big in the video dang.

But the air flow and noise, and cooling is much much better then NR200P tho

I like Fractals cases. Well thought out layout and features, plus an sort of understated design. And many variations, I don't want a glass sidepanel, but there is a variant with a solid side panel. The only thing I would like, was a case a bit smaller than their "Compact" sub-series (like Meshify and Torrent), that only supports mATX boards. I don't need a full ATX, but ITX boards with a good feature set are really expensive. I guess its not worth for them, building the exact same case but only marginally smaller.

Honestly this case looks like it has everything I would want, aside from a 5.25 inch bay. And the reason is because I would like to get a Blu-ray drive for my PC and I don't have enough space on my desk for an external USB drive.
@jgieling89582 жыл бұрын
If you don’t need it that often, you might be able to get away with putting the external drive on top of your case, though perhaps there are other factors that might make it not viable
@chrisfratz2 жыл бұрын
@@jgieling8958 ideally though I would want it in the case. Fortunately there's another case I'm looking at that fits what I need and want, but it's kind of unfortunate because this case also looks really nice (though it's probably a bit expensive)

Maybe flip the PSU to have the fan at the bottom? Looks like the top of the case doesn’t have an intake for it

Incredible how tendencies change. just a few years ago full tower was all the rage with 2-4 gpus, 10 hdds. My current setup is very similar to this one: a single gpu, an nvme a big sata drive and everything backed up in the cloud.

For a case like this you should route and manage the modular cables before putting the PSU in then connect them all up right before screwing the PSU in.

Looks like I now have no excuse not to get out of my 5 year old Define Nano S. Looks trickier to build in, though. Glad to be able to watch someone else make all the mistakes first. But it's literally 1.5cm in height away from being an mATX case, so why didn't they just do that? 2cm taller, 1cm wider behind the motherboard tray, 1cm longer for long boy GPUs; it wouldn't have been significantly larger overall, but it would have been significantly more usable. Or I could get the Torrent Compact with similar overall size and fewer compromises, but it is 30% larger and 60% more expensive.

A long pair of needle nosed pliers or something of that nature would help with those RGB plugs while the MB is installed.

When does the Torrent Nano go up for sale, not seeing it anywhere as of yet. Would love to convert to this Nano as I loved the Define Nano S when I had it.

That is actually a really interesting case. I wish I could afford to build an ITX system, but given how electricity bills are going to sky rocket soon here in the UK, I've got to switch to a laptop..

Beautiful one. Do you think a 3.5 slot (300mm - front is fine) GPU would fit the bottom? How many mm clearance do you see under you trio?
