Yeah, the best part of this video is when you owned up to the fact that no matter what you do to a Chibson, it will never be as good as a Gibson. Having said that, I agree that getting a nice Chibson and then upgrading it with Gibson parts is the way to go if you want to save a few dollars and gig with a "safe to bang up" guitar. They really are getting so much better these days. Not "Gibson" better, but yeah, far better than an Epiphone. I have five high quality CNC routed Chibson bodies from a private builder which I was able to fix up with high quality hardware. They are absolutely amazing guitars in their own right. I play them far more than I play my Gibson.
@TheworldofMattiasАй бұрын
Yeah, they definitly are different guitars and that´s why it could never be a Gibson. They look alike but they are not the same. I have a theory on how to get them closer to a Gibson but that takes structual change so I have had a tuff time confirming it. However, I think I´m on to something and I will tell you all once I´ve tried it out.

I really love that guitar. The top is exactly the way I want a burst. Only thing different I would have done is not crack the nitro. I try really hard to keep my old Gibson looking new. I don't want a new guitar looking old. I never understood the relicing. Unless it's like Dr. Nitro making exact copies of guitars that are famous. Other than that that thing is gorgeous! It's a shame it looks like I was too late for the Cathy guitars.

I've done the same with my ebony standard 60, built with nibs. Total fretwork, bone nut, Grovers,all Gibson parts, and accessories. R90 neck ,dirty finger bridge, API bridge and tail. Still have eight hundred or more ,bucks in project. Still, in my heart it's still not a Gibson. Could of obtained a real studio or other model. Still not sure I am happy. The chibson is a great player the way I want it,now. But it cost 60 % less than a real standard. I'm just a cheep bastard.

I have a question about the additional nitro you added. These guitars come with nitro finishes and then some are slightly or heavily reliced. Did you just paint right over the relic? I assume the nitro fuses to the nitro from Cathy? Is it weird if any of the relic is embedded below a coat or two of new nitro? -P
@TheworldofMattiasАй бұрын
Hello, this guitar is not reliced, but I did it on another guitar and that worked great. I think there are a difference of nitro paints. Some are pure nitro and some are a blend with poly in them. I think Cathy and other builders in China uses a blended version. I however use 100% nitro from #Nitorlack and it works well with the paint and laquer from Cathy. If the layers "blend" I do not know but the end result is really good!
@KarlSheridanАй бұрын
Great job Matthias, it looks and sounds fantastic. Did you spray nitro over the existing poly and put it in a freezer ?

@JuanJaimАй бұрын
Great video!!! I might spray some of that lacquer on my Chibson. I see you finally got yourself a reamer, pretty handy tool, too bad sometimes you just can fit it everywhere (like in the case of enlarging stud holes). I know what you mean about the "slinkiness" of strings. I've heard it has to do with your bridge saddles and nut, they're probably smoother on this Chibson. But I think it may also have to do with the angle of how strings come from the tailpiece and meet the bridge. I find strings feel slinkier on my hollowbody/semi-hollow body guitars than on every other, in some cases it might be the Bigsby or the trapeze tailpiece, but even with a regular tailpiece-bridge setting, and I mean 0.010 feeling similar to 0.009 on my Strats, Les Pauls, etc.. I think in some cases it might have to do with how I cut the nut (not the best looking job, but it stays in tune!). Anyhow, many variables there!
@TheworldofMattiasАй бұрын
Yeah, it’s not easy to understand why some guitars feel in a certain way. Over all the Chibsons have a slinky feel and Gibsons have a more solid feel. The one thing I know differs is the angle of the headstock. I really don’t know what else it could be? 😅🤘
@bobmanners8624Ай бұрын
Now that you have both styles, can you hear any difference between the bushing mounted bridge and the direct mounted bridge?
@TheworldofMattiasАй бұрын
Hmm, maybe some. But it’s hard to tell if it’s the bridge posts or the solid top that make a difference. No difference in feel though. But definitly better tone!

@@TheworldofMattias i just wish they would get those little things right, they put the logo on the headstaock and thats what would get them in customs if not covered with a sticker....and its not like Gibson are not aware of these chibsons...but who do they put a lawsuit against??...as there is no one main maker. So i dont know why they just dont make a actual replica with correct knob positions and gibson sized pickup rings....then i may consider buying one to put better pups and hardware in.👍 neither p4m and jason or cathy zhong (the main brokers) do not have ones that are proper replicas...there is always something not right with them visually. i have decided that after 30 years of playing, i owe it to myself to just finally save up and buy a used gibson les paul trad or standard used off reverb.
@TheworldofMattiasАй бұрын
Well, I agree about the shape and positions of the knobs and swithches. It would be nice to have them in the right position. The headstock angle is also something that they could quite easily get right. The logo, no I´ve gone from thinking it´s cool to don´t want it! I´d rather have my own logo on there :) Buy a Gibson! You won´t be disapointed, I own 8 and I love them all! If you want a cheap, but great playing guitar, but a "The Paul/Firebrand" or a 90-00 Studio. Great value guitars! Back in 2019 I ordered a Les Paul from Ali Express, pretty much all the same specs as a real Gibson R9, long neck tenon cost me an extra $15! Anyway, the guitar was completed/finished in nitrocellulose and shipped to me with no hardware installed. Like most instruments, it benefited greatly from a fret leveling and crowning, the neck has remained stable and the bone Nut I cut goes a long way to promote excellent tuning satiability. Cost of this guitar husk was about $385. I spent another $650 on all Gibson hardware and electronics, its been a fantastic guitar and compares nicely with my 1986 Les Paul Custom. The only issue I have with my 2019 Chibson is the fret wire, its kind of soft and seems to be of the same type used on Chinese made Epiphone instruments. I believe the vintage correct ABR-1 Bridge and installation really do a lot for the guitar's resonance. Cool content, I really enjoyed my build and as I stated, the guitar has been a great instrument for me. I also enjoyed watching your build, thank you for sharing.

I had a chibson factory build me a custom les paul custom.. Instead of the gibson logo, my last name is the logo, and the inlay on the headstock is a smallmouth bass jumping out of the water.. The fretboard is inlayed with a fishing pole and fishing lures.. It has a beautiful flamed maple top finished in bourbon burst.. The body and neck are solid mahogany with an ebony fretboard, stainless steel frets, and a bone nut.. I installed gibson hardware and electronics.. I went with the Nashville tune o matic bridge.. 490r/498t pickups.. Groover locking tuners.. It's hands down the nicest looking, playing, and sounding guitar that I own.. It's better than my Gibson Les Paul Standard and my Fender custom shop strat.. I probably have a little over a grand in it, and thats including the case.. If you find the right seller.. They are working with the same factories that make the high-end epiphone guitars.. They have the equipment and skills to build high-quality instruments..
