I remember when he was coaching the Wings and at that time, I read a story from an NHL analyst who said that free agents in many cases avoided Detroit because they did not want to play for him. People deserve another chance but not sure there is any cure for being an ahole.

Babcock didn’t have a communication problem. He had a being a bad human problem. Big difference. He did things for no reason at all other than abusing his position of power. This is a problem with some people in positions of authority where they think they can do anything they want and harm others just to put others down. If you have met people like this, it’s almost like a mental illness but it causes a lot of harm to others. I hope that he has taken a hard look at his behaviour, but what he has to change is a lot deeper than “communication”.

We were so devastated when he left our city’s team to go to Toronto. If the wings were struggling with the greatest coach still coaching, how could they ever get back to championships with a lesser coach was the sentiment. Being a life-long Detroit Red Wings fan, I never really disliked Babcock. He won a Stanley Cup in 2008, and came within a win of repeating in 2009. When I heard some of the things that he did: (Mike Modano not playing in his 1,500 game comes to mind) I really didn't care for him much. He reminds me of another coach in none other than "Iron" Mike Keenan. Someone who is better with seasoned veteran players and not so much with younger ones.

Babcock failed as a coach in that 7th game against the pens. He told the ream to be patient right up until Lidstrom finally scored with minutes to spare. They lost by one goal because of his insistence of patience. Both back to back years in the final the Red Wings controlled play. When you own the puck, you should be owning the other team on the scoreboard, not fucking the dog. That game 7 loss to Pittsburgh was a coaching nightmare, and I wanted him fired two minutes after the Pens won. He is simply just not that good.

@skyehorvath9063 I do agree with you completely about that 7th game of the 09' final. They let that series get away. They were up 3 games to 2 in that series, and even if they weren't able to close it out in 6, they should have (in only my opinion) easily won that 7th game at home. As much as the playoff losses in 95' to New Jersey, and 96' to Colorado hurt, that loss to the Pens in 09' is still a bitter one to this day.

Mike Sullivan and Paul Maurice both stand firm on the line of being harsh while keeping good relations and being that strong leader. More coaches need to model their style from these fellas. Never meeting, playing for, or coaching with Mike Babcock, it's tough to judge him. The numbers don't lie, his teams have been successful and he has coached Stanley Cup winning teams. However, he is one of the very few hockey people that give the vibe of being bigger than the game itself, and that has always rubbed me the wrong way. People can change. Is hockey fun with Mike Babcock? Despite all the work, sweat, blood, and strife a team goes through, it still needs to be fun at the end of the day. Will he keep that element of fun, or will he suck the life out of everyone by being solely a drill sergeant?

Babcock's resume is overinflated by coaching stacked teams. The Canada team he won a gold medal was ridiculously stacked, they still needed OT to beat USA. The Red Wings were stacked the whole time he was there and only won 1 cup. 09 team had 3 50 point defenseman including Lindstrom, 2 of the best defensive centers of all time in Datsyuk and Zetterberg, plus Hossa and Franzen. Still couldn't get it done.

This man owes his entire career to JS Giguere. Ever since Giggy nearly single-handedly won this tree stump of a human being a stanley cup he's had everything handed to him and either squandered or nearly squandered all of it. He won a cup in Detroit? Did you see that roster? How did he only win one cup with them? Replace him with a better coach and they are a dynasty. All his head games ruined the confidence of a young, developing Leafs team that still cannot believe in themselves beyond achieving a single playoff win series since the day he took over behind the bench. Team Canada? Did you watch that Olympic tournament? They almost lost to Latvia because he was having the most powerful offense in the world play a safe and conservative style. I could have coached that team to a gold medal. His spiel about 23 different communication styles is BS of the highest order. If it were true, and it isn't, then a) you would need a lot more coaches per team to cover how to coach to all 23 guys plus the 5-10 extras who get called up during the season and b) he will absolutely fail because he only knows one communication style which is 'asshole'.

Franzen is probably the WORST example somebody can give about Babcock being bad lmao. Franzen for starters isn't mentally all there, so anything said by him needs to be taken with a grain of salt. With that said, Lidstrom has spoke up around all this drama happened, and said he had absolutely nothing bad to say about Babcock, and has never heard of these allegations ever in his life, even after he retired, and only a few years ago, Lidstrom did an interview, and said it wasn't true. I'm going to take Lidstrom's word over Franzen's 100 times out of 100.

As a Jackets fan I was surprised. But Columbus has an excellent GM and top brass who take chances that often pay off. I believe people can change if they want to & are motivated. I believe in second chances. Babcock has nothing to lose and everything to gain. So do the Jackets. The organization saw something in Babcock. He’s got the Xs & Os. If he’s got the soft skills now the team is in wild card in a year or two and so many are proved wrong. If not Babcock’s fired and never coaches in the NHL again…

J. S. Led the ducks to the finals, not babycock. He was lucky in Detroit to be joining a great hockey team, before got there and choked, up 3 games 2 and losing a final that they surely should have won for a second cup in a row. Never went pass the 1st round in Toronto with all that talent. The modono incident in Detroit was plain spiteful, the franzen thing, the mainer thing in Toronto. So Detroit native and lifelong Wings fan and also a fan of Toronto (when they aren't playing Detroit) and can't stand Babcock. I heard sooo many stories of him being an ass even to kids and parents when he did clinics and the like. I do have one nice story though. When my one son was little, we were eating breakfast at a Restaurant in Northville Michigan and Mike came in with his family. We were right up by the door and my son was in a highchair and covered in pancakes. Mike came in and was right in my sons line of sight and waved and smiled at him, I guess like a normal person, lol! Anyway, I guess people can change but I won't be betting on the Blue Jackets any time soon.

To shoot straight, Babcock looks like a player's coach next to guys like Jack Adams or Scotty Bowman, the guys who won most of the Wings' Cups. His style of coaching works when you have strong-minded players who take nothing personally, but are determined to go through a brick wall to win. This kind of leadership style is prevalent in sports and in business. In the old days, he actually commanded the respect of elite players, likely because they know the winning business. And I suppose when he got hired by the Leafs, even some of the players were looking forward to playing for him, believing they could win. But then things went horribly wrong.

Damn I remember this guy when he coached the Spokane Chiefs. I remember as a Tri City Americans fan that I hated him and his team. One night I tossed a beer at him, he was an ass. However, he did a great job with the Spokane Chiefs. As a lifelong Red Wing fan... I was like ahh shit. He did ok in Detroit, but he also had a stacked team at the time. No clue that he treated players like shit, but i get it. Many of us came from that age and I have had tough coaches, they made us better...well as much as they could.
