My career path: 1. Get on a paid-on-call department getting my ff 1 and 2 certs 2. Join the airforce booking a firefighting job thanks to my certifications 3. I now stand out from other because I will be a career firefighter, I'm an EMT, and I'll be a veteran. 4. Profit
@gavinflake712 Жыл бұрын
I believe it's easier to join the airforce as a firefighter first cause they will pay for and provide your ff1 and 2 and then after that join a career department because they're going to pay more and have better benefits. The military and especially the airforce is one of the best ways to get certifications easily that apply to civilian applications. It will also get you in shape and teach you military bearing which fire departments love

@Gavin Flake I was able to lock in the job before going to MEPS because of my certifications, otherwise you wouldn't be guaranteed the job.

FF1/FF2, EMT, get hired, get paid to go to medic school. Finish 2 year EMS degree and find an ASN bridge, now you side hustle as an RN and get them to pay for your BSN bridge. Join military reserves as an officer, get your APRN paid for. Now you’re and officer in the fire service, officer in the military, side hustle as a nurse practitioner. Then get your FD to start a community resource paramedic program, and make you the chief over it and allow you to pick up OT on the weekends as a battalion chief. Pick up a hobby like flying and get a flight job when you retire as a FF or go work for the VA as a nurse practitioner to get two pensions or just stick out reserves for 20 And stick with the FD for 35 years and retire with 90-100%. Forgo the DROP because you’re so good with your finances a you already have 2-4 million invested and don’t need them belittling your pension by convincing you to retire early.

I have a similar plan. I work as an emt I just got my associates degree in pre-nursing and am applying for Fall 2024 nursing program ADN. I will transfer to finish my bsn. I’m about to apply for the Air Force reserves and do fire protection throughout the first couple years and then am going to give a run for pararescue and see if I can cut it. If I can’t I’m going to do Air Force SOST. When I get out I will work as a firefighter and do per diem or part time work as a nurse

This gave me hope. I’m a first year electrician apprentice at 22. I’m certain this isn’t what I want to do as a career but it pays the bills. I’m going back to community college to get my EMT, then Paramedic, then go through Fire Academy. I love how everything happens for a reason. Every step I take is intentional towards the life I want for myself. Thanks Mike!

My Path. 1. Wildland Fire Certs 2. Security Guard Certs 3.Emt Certs (must have ngl) 4. Life guard Certs. --- Assume you have all these ^ and you're still young and don't know exactly where life is going. This is the point where you stack your bag up. You spent enough time and money on certs already, you are more than qualified for respective employment opportunities, Get out there. Figured out you need more schooling at some point? Me too, Working Security/Wildland FF in the summer isn't it for me anymore- I want a Dispatch jobs with A/C. So i'm currently taking a 15 month vocational program. 1. Criminology and Emergency Response management (Certs/ASS Degree) 2. Cyber Security (Certs) That's it really- I only found you need a bach's if you either lack background/exp. If I wanted to easily increase my salary I can go further to become registered as a paramedic, and if I want more than that i'll register for flight paramedic.
@hedge63645 ай бұрын
Good I for for departments out west that don’t do EMS. But I’m a 33year veteran of the fire service and the departments out here require you to be both firefighter and paramedic. Most departments will only accept you being a paramedic prior to you applying for the position of firefighter. You have to test for the full time position but have to already be a medic. This is because our departments run ambulances and engine companies together and everyone rotates from engine to ambulance. The only two that doesn’t rotate is the Lt. and the engineer. Those are tested jobs so I do agree if you want something else to do yes get a trade job and make that extra money.

Its really important to consider your department, or the department you plan to work for in the future. For example, not all departments treat medics the same. Some departments have shortages and this will work against you in future promotions. Be tactful in your educational aspirations and make a plan to promote. This means. asking what your department looks for in advancements. Review your departments promotional guidelines. Talk to those in positions you want to promote to. Your time in the fire service will go by quickly and opportunities will pass you up if you aren't strategic in your path forward. Best advice I can give young guys is to be patient, research and make a plan. This will make you a better firefighter because it will give you a clearer view of your future, thus allowing to embrace each position and hone your craft in the now while preparing for the next steps.

Can you elaborate on ways that kids can plan to be firefighters but also plan to do college in case it doesn’t work out?
@TheDrewber Жыл бұрын
If kids plan to do college but also want to get into a career FF position, I’d recommend volunteering to show departments that they’re committed to serving the community. Those extracurriculars look great on a resume for any job, but departments love to see that. When I was in school I set some time aside to get my EMT to boost my experience a bit which in turned helped me get hired initially at a career dept.

I turned 18 2 days ago and just graduated… getting paid to go to the fire academy followed my a 6 week emt. This is because I have been a volunteer at a department, showed interest in learning, and the county giving funding for first responders because Of low recruiting numbers. See if your county is doing the same thing! Getting paid to go to school and coming out with a job is gonna be awesome. I’m super excited. Good luck !

Take a normal course load and don’t avoid sciences and social sciences. They will make you a well rounded graduate that will flourish in the fire service. Degrees will give you an edge over other candidates when you look to promote. Public administration and similar degrees will help keep your options open. Fire service degrees are too specific and will pigeon hole you. If people dissuade you from pursuing education they are giving you bad advice, beware. If you join the fire service you will always be taking classes both for certifications and continuing education credits to maintain those cents. Just remember, education is the only thing that can never be taken away from you.

@Rescue-mt7fl Жыл бұрын
Skip the fire science and emergency management degrees. When you go to become an executive officer, they already know you can fight fires. Additionally if you get injured and need to go into another profession or you are looking for another job after you retire in 20-25 years, those degree fields are worthless. Get a business degree. That is truly the best degree that translates across almost all jobs or trades. As a fire executive/chief, the primary focus of the job is business. Managing budgets and personnel.

Their are 8 different types if business degrees so which is best bro
@Rescue-mt7fl5 ай бұрын
@@Gunterforever great question. Truly, in my experience, it maters little. Most employers are looking for the name business on the transcript. My advice is first look at the local community college. Find out what they have that is a direct transfer to the nearest B school you are looking to get that degree from. Find out between both schools, what is a direct transfer. That will limit which B degrees you select from. Get as much done at community college as possible for much cheaper. Then transfer to your B school to finish. Virtually any business degree transfers to a massive array of promotional opportunities and second careers should life’s misfortune force you that way.
