Hi guys
My name is Sanjay Gupta and I am a cardiologist in the UK
I wanted firstly to apologise for not having put out any videos for a couple of months - i think i had tired myself out but hopefully now am feeling a lot better and rejuvenated and plan to start again
So today’s video is on the subject of atrial fibrillation and in the role of diet in preventing atrial fibrillation
The first thing I always say is that any condition can only develop due to four factors:
Age
Genetics
Bad luck
Lifestyle
We can’t do anything about age, genetics and luck.
We can however try the best we can to lead a good lifestyle.
In terms of lifestyle, it is of course important to ensure that we get regular cardiovascular exercise, minimise our stress levels and maximise the quantity and quality of our sleep.
Diet is very very important and whilst I always say it is important to eat in moderation, minimise processed foods and alcohol intake, i have never spoken about what kind of diet would be good to prevent Afib
In my research to answer this question, i found an interesting paper which was published in the circulation journal in 2014. The lead author is Martinez-gonzalez and basically what the investigators did was about 7500 patients between 55- 80 years who had risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure , smoking etc but who did not have atrial fibrillation and randomly assigned them to one of 3 different diets:
A mediterranean diet supplemented with extravirgin olive oil so they had to consume 50g or the equivalent of 4 or more table spoons of extra virgin olive oil daily
A mediterranean diet supplemented with mixed nuts
A control arm which consisted of advice to reduce all types of fat
After a follow-up of 4.8 years the trial had to be stopped early because patients on the mediterranean diet had a lower risk of stroke and cardiac events. 72 patients developed Afib in the MEd+EVO group, 92 in the low fat diet group and 89 in the Med diet+ nuts group.
They also found that there was 38% reduction in the relative risk of developing Afib in patients who were on the mediterranean diet which was supplemented with extravirgin olive oil.
The investigators hypothesised that the reason for lower incidence of Afib in patients taking the mediterranean diet with extravirgin olive oil was due to the antifammatory effects on the oil. Fib is thought to be brought about by inflammation and inflammatory markers in the blood such as CRP are found to increase risk of Afib in the future. In this study the EVOO represented 22% of the total calories from the mediterranean diet. So i think that although we need lots more studies like this, if you are looking to change your diet for the sake of your heart health then i would recommend a mediterranean diet which is supplemented with at least 4 tbspoonfuls of EVOO.
Thank you so much for listening. I will paste the link to the study on my Facebook page. YORKCARDIOLOGY1
I would be really grateful if you’d consider liking,c commenting and sharing.
I could really do with more people visiting the channel and my website. Thank you once again

I've had A-fib since I was twenty (I'm 61 now). When I have an episode and require to cardiovert, I take 2 tablespoonfuls of cod liver oil, 800 mg of potassium, and 800 mg of magnesium, which restore me to a normal sinus rhythm within a few minutes to an hour. Works every time. I do adhere to a whole food plant-based diet, don't drink, smoke, or do anything else ridiculous. I also take specific supplements daily. They are: 1600 mg magnesium, 800 mg potassium, CoQ10 with PQQ, Garlic, Vitamin E with all eight components, sea salt, iodine, vitamin B12, 5 g of powdered Vitamin C, I tablespoon of Omega 3 from krill oil, lutein, zinc, cinnamon, chromium, and milk thistle. I drink at least a gallon of water a day, purified via a Big Berkey filtration system. I don't get much exercise, as I am in a wheelchair (due to a truck accident 15 years ago), but I do my best to move as much as possible. I hope this information is helpful. Blessings, Jesse.

I became total carnivore about 10 years ago. My Afib settled down to maybe once or twice a month. I am lost all the extra weight, I have no metabolic disorders…no diabetes, hypertension, etc. etc. doc referred to my blood work as “pristine”. Anyone tell me a carnivore diet is bad is so wrong. Sorry so many people are still eating carbohydrates and those horrible oils.

Congratulations!!! Just getting the AFib under control is totally worth it. I have AFib as well and I'm on the fence about the carnivore diet. You mentioned AFib, HBP, and sugar levels being regulated. How are your cholesterol levels?

Good to hear from you, doc. Hope your dad's doing better. Not only your instructions (may I consider you one of my doctors?) but the comments of your other "patients" are similar to what I have experienced with Afib. Their many suggestions on various ways of stopping it by yourself are not only interesting, but potentially very helpful to those with Afib. Thank you, & say hi to your dad from all of us--your "patients." Tell him that his son has done well & he should be proud!

I have just discovered Dr Gupta's channel as I am researching my Palpitations that are recent. Due to a terrible shortage of family doctor's in Winnipeg, MB I am unable to get a referral to the cardiologist who repaired a tear in my heart a few years ago. Anyways, I have gone through these presentations and I have identified stress and a lack of Magnesium as possible causes while I wait to see a Doctor. This is very helpful and has put my mind at ease. Thank you !

I’m 75 and had daily AFIB episodes for a couple of years, medicated hypertension, and what I thought was normal age-related aches and pains, even though I had been on a low-fat Mediterranean diet for a decades. My primary care MD, who is a holistic practitioner, suggested I might try a Ketogenic low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet because my labs indicated that even though I was eating lots of fruits, vegetables and no added sugars, I was consuming too many carbs. After a month on Keto, my AFIB episodes gradually but completely stopped, my blood pressure reduced, my inflammation was less, and my A1C and fasting glucose reduced dramatically. It’s now been a year and I have been able to stop any blood pressure meds, I’ve never had another AFIB episode, and my arthritic and tendinitis pain is almost gone. This combination of benefits is very common with those who have converted to a clean Keto lifestyle.

Someone mentioned how much your videos reduce anxiety and increase motivation. This is absolutely true for me as well. I started taking magnesium back in May this year after seeing your video on it's potential benefits. I think it has reduced the severity of what feels like AFIB events and given me more stamina. I stopped taking the magnesium (and all caffeine) shortly before going on a MCOT heart monitor in July/August for one month because I wanted to start the test with a "clean" system. Then in the last week of being monitored I went back on caffeine to see if it made a difference. Much to my surprise, my MCOT came back spotless! Even one severe episode I reported using the device was apparently not an AFIB event, hard to believe because my heart felt awful. My surgeon said he has no idea what the event was or any of the other miner events that I reported. I think the magnesium has reduced the severity of what feels to me like an AFIB event, but I have no way of knowing if that is why my heart monitor came back shockingly clean to the point that my heart surgeon said there is no point in doing the ablation surgery. Your videos keep me motivated to keep putting effort into my diet, exercise, sleep, overall life style, magnesium and reduced caffeine.... and I really appreciate that because it is hard to stay on track with a "life style change" for life. I started using a FitBit to track my walking and sleep and will try to stay very focused on a mediterranean diet with olive oil and of course magnesium. I am in my early fifties at 244 pounds, walk an average of 4.5 miles per day measured over a week (that includes all walking, even around the house as measured by the FitBit Charge basic unit, no heart monitor) and sleep a weekly average of just over 4 hours per night (also measured by the FitBit, which I believe to be accurate). I will reply to this comment in October to let you know how I did with weight loss being the main goal for now. Thanks again for all your videos !

I’ve been an ethical vegan for the past 9 years living on a plant based diet. I developed what has now become persistent AF following the insertion of a pacemaker 6 years ago. When advising a plant based diet, emphasis should be made on a whole foods plant based diet. As advocated by the PCRM. Thanks for this video btw. I’ve been following you for a while.

@SasjohnO Do you mean to say that due to a previous problem you had to insert a pacemaker which then led to your developing AF? Sometimes, pace maker is inserted as a treatment FOR AF, that's why I am asking. Hope you are well.

my spouse has afib and by accident we found that berries, particularly blueberries, raspberries and blackberries with a good yoghurt, cleared her afib for some hours. repeated it 20 times and get the same result so presumably due to antioxidants or resveratrol content of berries. so we now finish a meal with a berry desert based on what berries are available.
@Ruktiet
