Cavalier king charles spaniels have a very serious health issue due to selective breeding for the apple head look. 70% will show have brains too big for their skulls. This condition is very painful & may not become apparent until the dog is older than 2.5 years. Unless it is successfully treated (which is not easy), the condition can cause lifelong severe pain. Although adorable with fun personalities they are a breed I would want to not be continued to be bred nor promoted.

My first dog was, stupidly, a working line German shepherd. It was an absolute baptism of fire and like learning to drive in a Ferrari! It wasn’t an easy journey and we learned everything together as we went with many blunders. But we put in the hours with training and there is no one I would have rather learned the ropes with. I lost her at the beginning of this year to discospondylitis and I feel her absence in every waking moment. She was so exuberant and driven and lively. My house feels so empty without her. What an amazing dog❤

@@winstonelston5743 yeah, I did find a lovely dog who is literally the niece of the first dog. She’s really special and I’m so lucky to have her. Had big paw prints to fill but she filled them❤️ and I don’t sweat the small stuff anymore. Losing a dog for the first time taught me that everything they do that is annoying to me will be missed dearly once they pass on. Eg. The hole they chewed in the fancy carpet when they were a puppy will one day be the best part of the carpet ❤️

@@Andidejager. I'm so happy for you. The elkhound I have now is the great-great grandson of the dog I had when I got him, and she was a great-niece of her predecessor. Speaking of the annoying things, the second elkhound we had found my Mom's brand-new trifocals while she was out and when she got home the frames were unrecognizable and the polycarbonate lenses had dimples impressed into them where Moose had chewed them. Baldurdash has clawed through the sheet rock by the back door, and a shepherd I had many years ago had to go home with the owner of the pet shop that boarded him because he had dug through the wall into the restaurant next door after destroying a kennel crate, and a shepherd-terrier mix shook and threw her rawhide ball so hard it smashed the TV screen. _The Montefuscos_ was on...

@@winstonelston5743 just had to look up an elkhound and woah! They are gorgeous! You’re a lucky person! And I dunno about you, but I feel that family relation to a past dog is so SO special🥹 like they live on in some small way❤️ I will say, it was so daunting to start the entire training process from scratch with Siggy (the second dog) but I’m a lot more experienced now so it’s been a smoother ride than it was with Nietzsche (the first dog)😂. And dog training is really the most rewarding part of my life, even when it’s difficult!❤️ Haha as for the shepherd who burrowed through the wall, that’s very on brand for a shepherd 😂 they really don’t like being alone. They follow you constantly and panting and whining becomes the soundtrack to your life😂 and thankfully, I’ve found my dogs grew out of destroying my valuable things😂 no more storing my leather boots on the top shelf of my bookcase!😂

Well I have my heart set on getting a Rottweiler as my first dog. I've done extensive research and I plan on raising it as a puppy. I have a strong personality and I am calm and assertive. I have a high degree of confidence. I know that Rottweilers need socializing which I have plans for exposing it to other people, animals and situations and I plan on letting it run on leash while I ride a bike and plan on training it. I have a disability so I definitely have the time to put in the work.

I had a neighbor who had two rotties, adults when I first met them, and on that first meeting they proved themselves to be cuddle-bug-type lap dogs. I don't think I'd be able to manage one, let alone two, but I like the breed. I hav a fifty-five pound rthern Spitz-type dog, a Norwegian Elkhound, my fourth , and he's a rowdy but sweet-tempered challenge, and the best heating pad in the world. Keeps hitting the heated seats switch in my Crosstrek.

Beagles are insane, energy levels 110%. I wouldn't recommend a beagle for a novice. They also have short attention spans and are easily distracted. They have high prey drive. Beagles are surprisingly difficult to train. The only thing they really have going for first time owners is they probably won't become aggressive towards people if you mess up their training.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I've never owned a dog before in my life and really want one. I've read up on just about every breed there is. The one I absolutely fell in love with... the Cane Corso. Absolutely beautiful. Here's the thing, every dog owner I've talked to says no, that's a bad idea for a first dog. Most of the sites I go to with a few exceptions agree they're bad for a first-time dog owner. Now, a few facts about me. I don't have a family. It would be just me and my dog. I work a full-time job, fairly active. I plan on getting a good size place with a yard pretty soon. I was hoping to have a dog to go on hikes, maybe camping and things of that sort. My original plan was to get the dog as a puppy, go to a school, and get the necessary training both for me and my dog. And while I was at work, a doggy daycare type thing to keep my dog stimulated and more social. Seemed like a good plan. But I'm looking at other dogs, like the German Shepherd, which I'm learning there are different types, some that I should avoid. It's frustrating. Thinking that I may actually invest time and money on a dog breed that I don't really want. I may sound like a jerk saying that cause I know all dogs will be loving and loyal...but it's how I feel.

I'm not sure I agree with this. From my experience, Labs can be extremely difficult to get the attention of or keep control of when outdoors due to them being very curious of everything around them. Their high energy can also be difficult to deal with as well

While we had had shepherd-pit mixes before, we stumbled into a Norwegian Elkhound puppy that picked my Mom as her person. My Mom was frail and elderly, and when I read up on the breed I expected a disaster. My Dad and I lobbied for a Lab or a Golden. Mom ended up with a sequence of elkhound bitches that proved to be highly adaptable to her activity level, and now I have a nine-year-old elkhound dog who, while he is a handful, is the sweetest disposition dog I've ever had. Do I recommend a Norwegian Elkhound as someone's first dog? Honestly, no. I've been lucky and have had some exceptional elkhounds, but they are a challenge if you haven't hd experience with the breed. Highly intelligent, independent, heavy shedding, did I mention independent? with a bit of stubborn streak, and with strong herding and prey instincts, but if you know how to handle them they can be the best dogs in the world in the right home. The breeder told me that Aanika, a retired champion who had whelped one litter before being retired from the breeding program before she came into service with my Mom, was a "once-in-a-lifetime" dog. Aani and I were at the kennel (Aani was in the whelping rom as the midwoof) when her great-great grand-pup litter came along,and that day the breeder chose a little male puppy for me, the previously mentioned sweetest I've ever had, Baldurdash! He came home with me at four months old and settled in with Aani and me. I've been lucky, I've never had a dog that wasn't a once-in-a-lifetime dog, and if you think about it, every dog deserves that description because every dog is as individual a its human companion.

I've had an American cocker spaniel before, but he was a little big for me. Wonderful dog though. My best buddy. I'm looking at getting a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel right now. Perfect size and temperament for me, as I'm disabled and I want more of a lap dog than someone to jog with. I have a big, fenced back yard if the puppy needs exercise, though and I hope he doesn't mind 24/7 company because there is another couple who live in the house with 2 friendly Chihuahua mixes living upstairs. I understand that Cavs make good emotional support dogs - you just can't ditch them for long periods, which is understandable. I also like the Labrador Retriever, but they're a little big for me and with my bad balance, I need a dog I can look after safely. I also like the Papillon and the Cavador, but I think for my lifestyle, the Cav is perfect.

The only good one was a Golden. Staffies are an outrageous recommendation. I knew a couple who had a pair. Great with the family but killed cats and a neighbor dog who got through the fence. Greyhounds are great if your kid NEVER leaves the gate open. An adult lab is outstanding. The first two years can cost thousands in destruction. And the Cav? SMH They are medical time bombs. My list: Golden, mini or standard Poodle , English Cocker, Collie, and Rat Terrier. Any of these except the Rat Terrier would be better as a hybrid because of purebred health issues.

@thomassturge1274
@thomassturge1274 Жыл бұрын
Prob due to not knowing what you’re getting with a rescue dog, but with a pedigree or purebred their traits and health history is already known about. Too many variables with a rescue to be able to go into in-depth advice, esp as a lot will have issues and behaviours that need correcting, due to things like neglect, abuse, fear/aggression etc. For a first time owner (learner), it’s a lot to take in, and a massive commitment; it’s as much about training the newbie owner as it is the dog. I’m speaking from the point of view of someone who has never owned a dog and doing lots research by watching channels like Will’s. I love the GSD and Rottie breeds but I know they’re not right for me as a first dog, but I didn’t know that before listening to Will. I’ve grown up around dogs and even lived with one (already trained) but never owned one.
