Is Bully a bad choice for first time owners?

While we had had shepherd-pit mixes before, we stumbled into a Norwegian Elkhound puppy that picked my Mom as her person. My Mom was frail and elderly, and when I read up on the breed I expected a disaster. My Dad and I lobbied for a Lab or a Golden. Mom ended up with a sequence of elkhound bitches that proved to be highly adaptable to her activity level, and now I have a nine-year-old elkhound dog who, while he is a handful, is the sweetest disposition dog I've ever had. Do I recommend a Norwegian Elkhound as someone's first dog? Honestly, no. I've been lucky and have had some exceptional elkhounds, but they are a challenge if you haven't hd experience with the breed. Highly intelligent, independent, heavy shedding, did I mention independent? with a bit of stubborn streak, and with strong herding and prey instincts, but if you know how to handle them they can be the best dogs in the world in the right home. The breeder told me that Aanika, a retired champion who had whelped one litter before being retired from the breeding program before she came into service with my Mom, was a "once-in-a-lifetime" dog. Aani and I were at the kennel (Aani was in the whelping rom as the midwoof) when her great-great grand-pup litter came along,and that day the breeder chose a little male puppy for me, the previously mentioned sweetest I've ever had, Baldurdash! He came home with me at four months old and settled in with Aani and me. I've been lucky, I've never had a dog that wasn't a once-in-a-lifetime dog, and if you think about it, every dog deserves that description because every dog is as individual a its human companion.

My 5 year old intact male Doberman wants to meet every person he sees, and play with every dog he sees. He has had two fights with two different dogs and both of those dogs were the aggressor. Dobermans aren't aggressive. They are protective. If he is not provoked, he will not attack.

Far better trainers on KZbin that have this breed and as well as pointing out your responsibility to the dog and other people when you own one he shows you just what the effort with them can get you , an amazing caring loyal friend and companion, a work dog , an agility dog , and so so many other things ! Being so unbalanced to scare people of the breed leaves them as the next target when they don’t deserve it . ( American standard dog training ) think that’s the fella you need .

I got my Cane Corso for free the family didn't have enough area for 2 large dogs. He's a service dog. He's a year old.

German... he keeps his eyes on my ...he watches me all day and waits for my next moves .... anyone come close to my door.. like an a million repeated alarming LOUD barks.. but only if someone comes close to the house.. he never leaves my yard.. he's nice to the cats.. and he is a softyyy but no one knows lol

Doberman intelligence is different. It's not just vocabulary size. My dobie quite literally assessed situations and decided if she was going to follow commands - and it also depends on who was giving the commands. She manipulated the absolute hell out of the weak willed people in our house. She had no qualms using violence to protect her pack and our territory. Amazing dogs, but in no way a fit for everyone.

The most beautiful dogs .. my Rottie was everything he describes loyal, smart as hell , big baby boy, he is and will be the love of my life my soul dog I miss him everyday, lost him a year ago he was only 5 and half and I hope to get a girl next

Curious your thoughts on galgos or podencos. I saw galgos listed in your ‘not for first time dog owners’ but greyhounds here. We’re not first timers and are about to take on a podenco Campanero. There aren’t many videos out there about this sighthound mastiff mix. Have you experienced one?

I disagree with dog on dog aggression. My first Doberman was 125 lbs and was attacked by a Jack Russell and a Boxer. He was taught to ignore other dogs and was a gentle boy.

Our four and a half month old female is a handful. Someone mentioned they are sneaky and its true. She'll steal something she's not supposed to have and sit down next to an approved toy and chew the contraband while looking back to see if we notice every moment or so. She's been like that since the day we got her. VERY food motivated for training, too.

Would you prefer your doberman cropped and ducked or Floppy airs a long tail?

My second English Mastiff is just as gentle as my first male. My now female is 2 and using my training techniques Teaspoon knows who gives directions in the pack. I have found using a rubber and on the bum stops behavior that is not except-able works better since they are very sensitive and easily hurt feelings just a quick rubber and and a “no” stops that unwanted behavior. The pure size and deep bark is a warning for me someone around. I own a gun she is not used for attacking but someone coming on property knows quick enough they entered the wrong yard and quickly leaves. She’s my home alarm and I have her back to let her know I do the protective part she just sounds the alarm. Loyalty from a Mastiff is wonderful and reassuring that unwelcome people will move along.

I have raised a perfect gentleman with exercise, obedience and lots of love. I also love the breed so much I’ve rescued a female and have applied same training and she is now 2 1/2 years at 150lbs and goes by sign language when I give her directions. Our local Lowes employees has enjoyed Teaspoon learn and grow and very happy to be part of her trading just in giving her a snack when they ask her to set. She is very familiar with all noises and machines they use to do their job. They are truly intelligent and know when trined by sign language they are fast learners cause they know a snack is coming.

Meanwhile the Golden Retriever hangs out in back being the best pet you can have.

My weim/pit is the most chill dog ever. She gets a lot of exercise through hikes and beach time. She doesn't chase birds or any other animals. She just observes. She's so amzing!! But yeah, she does have mild separation anxiety but we're working on it and she is doing great for a weeks of training. She's soooo smart and funny.

Goofy but ridiculously intelligent, seriously protective but incredibly gentle and loving, friendly but can be intense, loves to train and play games but very very stubborn. Love our girl to bits, our first dog and yes it’s been hard work but worth every minute of it. Be sensible with a dobie, do NOT let them take control, lots and lots of running, playing and training and you’re good. 👍 Honestly never met a dog that loves cuddles as much as her. One thing I will say, they need to be part of the family, not just lie in a corner out the way. She’s happiest when she’s in amongst everyone, or as she likes to do on top of you snoring like a chainsaw. Forget about your personal space, my space is now her space. 😂

Live in a small apartment ... I am not home for at least 10 hours every day cause of work ... But i am a super active person.... Recommendation for a dog breed for me ? Something medium to large size don't like small dog breeds... Has to be quiet cause of the neighborhood and it will be many hours alone ... Was thinking of a sharpei maybe? Any recommendations? And here I am with a Border Collie, a BC x Rat Terrier, and did have a Cattle Dog cross! In all fairness, though, when I got them I was in a house with a yard. The baby is 12!

Not familiar with the Malinois personally, but Labs and BCs are wonderful to work with. People should know, though, that the Border Collie can be hyper sensitive to movement and sounds, as well as your mood. They are extremely intuitive, and come with built-in clocks. They can also learn bad things, as readily as good. Don't be surprised if it's smarter than you! LOL

Thanks Will Atherton, for all these helpful information! I wished to have a bichon frisé for decades. Turns out after talking with dog owners and googling - Bichons are the perfect breed for me. Max the havanese puppy is coming to live with me in 2 days time. He is my first doggie.

Had Rottweilers all my life. Now got the Bullmastweiler which is a blonde looking rottweiler, longer face like a rottweiler but bullmastiff colouring and chubbiness. Shes beautiful. Everyones always asking to breed. They are family dogs too, they dont have a rottweiler working dog/guard dog temperment although all the dogs i had they were family dogs so its not what im saying, just bullmastweilers will not be worked into a guard dog, they dont understand hurting people so are very gentle but more powerful or at least she is. shes same size as me 6ft stood up and only 2. Very clever, she seems to be self aware which is crazy for people to understand. I told her her dads going to heaven, she cried. he then cried. they communicated to each other by licking their lips. if you see your dog licking its lips, its trying to tell you something. she is aware she is a dog and she is so sad right now after losing her dad. wouldn't come near me thinking i killed him. understood heaven after the cat died.. i told her she went to heaven (as she died in my arms waiting for a vet appointment) i asked if she crapped in my room. She said yes, she did, tested her many different ways. Left no, right yes. I've asked her a lot about her, about how she thinks, talks. I asked her if her old mummy or daddy hurt her. i said look this way (left) for your old mummy or right for your old daddy and she putt her head downtowards me and turned away indicated i hurt her.. (because i had t put my other 16 year old to sleep) but videos of her crying. the loud cry is not them crying.. at all, its their excited/attention cry. when they cry, its a very very low cry. can hardly hear it and eyes water. her jaw shakes too. its incredible. i sound like i need sectioning but no im fine lol keep an eye on tiktok and youtube and ill upload videos of our communication. She knows what she looks like. who she is. its fucking insane. dog got put down 3 days ago now. still won't go near me and is so angry with me. told me shes angry with me. i explained what anger is obviously. ill upload the videos as your going to be sceptical but huge breakthrough here.

Rottweilers are the best

Me and one of my rotties were on the walk and some akita jumped over the fenced and chased us and my rottie stayed calm listened to my commands and the akita was trying to get into the fight and tried to provoke my rottie. Luckily some people pulled the akita away from us, I almost lost a shoe 😂 it was a mess. No one was harmed. But I am so mad at the akita owner to have a dog so angry and large and the fence so short so irresponsable. Also oone night when I had sleep paralysis my rotties protected me from the sleep paralysis "demon". My fave breed. Rottweilers are the best of ancient roman and german engineering 😄

I’m planning on getting an English mastiff cuz they are great dogs and I always wanted a guard dog plus I have enough time to train them cuz I work from home most of the time. Plus with some help in training and socializing the dog owning an English mastiff will become painless

One day I WILL own this breed. Not now, but maybe when I'm around settling age and I have to stay home more to spend time with kids. But my goodness what an amazing breed.
