@@Jeontastic Not a lot of people major in it, at least at my university. K-12 Schools don't teach it well at all due to their obsession with memorization, when in reality, math is about finding an alternative way to figure out the problem. Pretty good video. I got my Ba in music in 2013 and got my MBA in 2014 because at that time, everyone had a BA or BS, and I needed to set myself up to stand out and got a masters. Now we are getting to a point where everyone almost needs a masters. I would say if you’re gonna do anything? Double major? Make one of them business. It’s such a fluid degree. Marketing, accounting, HR, sales, IT, MIS, economics, etc. You can almost do anything with it (in terms of landing a job). With automation, you almost have to choose a career that will 1) get you decent money 2) won’t be phased out. Anything that requires you to be with people + has a demand for? Go that route. Go into IT. So many people (like myself) know Jack squat about computers and information systems. There will always be a need. Business, go into operations, or accounting, or HR where you’re leading a team of people. I work in accounting, and I’m having to learn put myself ahead of the curve with coding because soon high schoolers who know how to code and know that language can easily beat me out of a job if I don’t ever learn it or adapt my skill set. So I say always aim for a degree that will land you in a place that will always be at the epicenter of adaptation and innovation so you can earn a decent living and always fine tune your skills. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk

Shane, i'm in favor of marketable double majors but even more in favor of getting a single undergrad followed by a grad degree in the secondary topic. The reason is that double majors tend to be perceived as "more of the same" whereas grad degrees are necessary for many upper level positions that an undergrad would not be qualified for. I think that getting lots of education in one's chosen profession is a very good idea though. for me, it has helped tremendously to have a broad education in terms of job security, mastery of the topic which helps to reduce stress in the workplace, and advancement. however this only holds true if the skills are marketable and being applied in the workplace. if those hold true then you'll soon be recognized as the resident expert.

Great vid. To be honest instead of double majors I look at it as "enhancement majors". That is, any second degree which improves your overall ability to do work in your first degree. These are majors that are common to most industries so you can "get in" and enable you to lobby for the job you really want. Business, Information Technology, Business Analytics and Education fit the bill pretty well IMO.

@abigaildoyle75544 жыл бұрын
I did a double degree in IR and linguistics and I have to say although it's a great dream, it's kind of unrealistic. I genuinely think it'd be a better idea and open many many more doors for you if you studied economics or statistics in addition to a foreign language instead (multiple languages, really, and something more niche than romance languages). Literally everyone who wants to work in government or international organizations has the exact same degrees and speaks the same languages. Unless you go to a top university and have amazing internships you won't stand out, it's a degree that's not specialized enough to have a lot of good options. With economics you could easily find a good job and get into an organization like the UN with a lot of work experience. Out of everyone I know who did a degree like this many of us have traveled, many of us have worked abroad and pretty much everyone I know has just ended up being a teacher, a lawyer or doing some totally unrelated work they could've done without those degrees. I absolutely loved my studies but if I knew then what I know now I'd have chosen something more practical and specific with good job opportunities. Specifically economics.

You need to double major in something that makes sense to a business. Theater and neuroscience are completely different industries and skill sets in one does not translate well to the other. For example i did a double degree in electrical engineering and business which gives me technical expertise as well as knowledge of key business areas like economics and accounting. This is highly desirable as they are both key components of most businesses and i am working on getting an engineering management role in future (currently early career engineer on 96k a year)

When you live in a country that doesn’t offer the option of double majoring in college :) It sucks , I wanted to double major in business & engineering but omg , seems impossible 😞

As long as you have a solid plan on one good major, you'll be fine

I am from the British education system which law is an undergraduate degree. My previous roomate is doing a dual degree in computer science and law. He had always been coding or diving in the legal databases... No life...

Really good video! I was wondering your opinion on MIS and Supply chain management dual major. I was planning on doing MIS and Accounting but I just don’t like accounting that much. However I really like supply chain management.

College freshman currently dual majoring in Game Design and Computer Science. Comment put before watching the video. Let's see what amazing advice you have to say! :) Edit: Finished watching your video: guess I fall into the section of Number 2 and Number 8. Game Design is something I'm super passionate about and Computer Science is something I enjoy doing.

How about a video on whether graduate double degrees are worth it? For example a lot of law schools offer a 3+1 option to get your mba as well as your jd

I am about to become a DPT while majoring in business. Totally worth it! The only thing I haven’t enjoyed is all the years I have spent studying and the fact that I still have some years left. The best decision you can make is to double major! (Except for the fact that in America you will have much more debt to pay).Glad education is technically free here (Costa rica) Loved your channel! 😊

But for economics and other majors wouldn’t it be correlation not causation because wouldn’t millionaires and the rich send their kids to college or something. Idk what I was going with this

What do you think about an immersive degree? It’s a relatively new degree with a focus in areas including VR, AR, XR, 360°, 3D. A few universities/colleges have begun offering them.

Hi, Shane. I've managed to get myself into a degree that has both management and chemistry embedded into its curriculum. I think it's a great program and after following your videos, I think I made the right choice. It's sort of like MIS, but instead of computer science it's chemistry. Would love to hear your thoughts on it since it's a relatively new degree so there's not much information on it.

I might cover that in the future Miguel. Stay tuned

Would computer information systems and biology work well together? Currently a sophomore at a community college and going to transfer to a 4 year. I really want to change my major from psychology to something else.
