Good to see another video that caters to people who still appreciate vintage proportions. You say that dress watches have become less of a thing in the last few years. I had to wonder what you meant by the last few years. When I was growing up in the 60s and 70s most men wore a dress watch. But from the mid to late 70s sportier watches crept in.

For me the problem with modern dress watches is that they’ve gotten a little bit too far toward the “big and thick” end of the scale in a lot of cases. Dress watches are supposed to be subtle, classy, and understated whilst being beautiful and elegant at the same time. They’re not supposed to be wrist bling. And they’re not supposed to be so big or thick that they’re on show literally all the time because you simply can’t fit them under the cuff of your shirt. They’ve become garish and pretentious. It feels like people these days think that the correct size for a dress watch for their their wrist is one that fills the entire width of it. And to me that kinda feels like it defeats the point of a dress watch. I suspect this is why so many people are buying vintage watches from eBay and places like that these days. I wish more makers would go back to making 35-39mm dress watches that are maybe 8mm or 9mm thick max. They don’t even need to be automatic because it’s not like you’ll be wearing them all day, every day. So you’ll probably end up hand winding them every time you wear them regardless. I just bought a lovely little 35mm watch from the 60’s with a really great looking domed, grey sunburst dial and separate day and date complications at 3 and 6 o’clock similar to a Seikomatic Weekdater but a little fancier. It’s got a hand winding movement and honestly it’s SO thin. Without the domed crystal I bet the case is no thicker than 5mm. I really wish there were watches like that still being made, instead of 44/45mm monstrosities that look like you’re wearing a satellite dish on the end of your arm lol.

I have big wrists yet I really don't care much for the oversized look, I have wall clocks that are smaller in appearance.

@Bkesal14 Жыл бұрын
What are some watches you'd suggest that fit your criteria? I.e. smaller case size, slimmer profile, vintage aesthetics?
@sam_the_man Жыл бұрын
@@Bkesal14 it’s been a long time since I posted that comment, and I think it would seem that in the meantime some companies have really caught on to the prevailing consumer sentiment. I think at the higher end of the budget, the Longines _Conquest Heritage_ and _Heritage Flagship_ models are both really great modern reissues/reproductions of much older pieces they produced previously in the 60s I think. The _Conquest Heritage_ is my personal favourite because it’s smaller at 35mm (Flasgship is 38.5mm), and its domed dial I feel is a much more faithful reproduction of the dials from the era. Both are super thin considering they’re automatic, too. Also I saw that Rado reintroduced their _Golden Horse_ model - a sporty dress watch they produced from the 50s/60s onwards in many different forms. Its casing and styling seems to perhaps be a bit of an homage to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust, with fluteless or fluted bezel options. The main difference being the Rado sports a heavily domed dial as opposed to Rolex’s much more modern-looking flat dial. At the lower end of the scale, a few more budget-oriented brands have also capitalised on the call for a return to retro, with brands like Accurist and Geckota to name but a few releasing their own versions of the classic 60’s style bicompax racing chronograph (à la the 1968 Heuer Camaro) featuring tonneau/pin cushion cases with round bezels and dials. The compromises made here, however, are that the movements are usually either quartz or mechaquartz with no running seconds dial. Although I will say I picked up Accurist’s version, the _Retro Racer,_ with blue dial and orange and white accents, for half price at £70 down from their £129 RRP and I’ve been VERY impressed with it so far. It’s thin, its stated size of 41mm seems to wear much smaller because the lugs are so short, and the finishing is really great for the price. Sadly it’s since been discontinued it seems. If you’re not intimidated buying from Chinese sites like AliExpress, then I’d also fully recommend looking into the brand Mysterious Code. They produce some really lovely retro-inspired pieces, with their best I think being their interpretation of the 50’s style Longines bi- and tricompax chronographs. The model I picked up was a bicompax with blue guiolloché reverse panda dial with silver subdials, and I have to say for around £75 (available here: a.aliexpress.com/_EJ4RdTZ), I’m absolutely delighted with it. It uses the Seiko mechaquartz chronograph movement featuring a sweeping chronograph main seconds hand and has been incredibly accurate so far. The only downside for me with this brand has been their awkwardly modern and stereotypically Chinese-gibberish-attempt-at-English random brand name. Its just such a nice little watch at 38mm that I can bring myself to ignore that.

I have a Ball Roadmaster Marine GMT 40mm and it is a beautiful Swiss Made watch. I ordered it from the factory and they let you pick your serial number and engrave your name. I picked my birthday! I get asked about it all the time and people enjoy the story about it’s origins. The phrases “He’s on the Ball” and “Get on the Ball” came from this watch brand. The tritium glow isn’t overly bright but it makes reading the time super easy at night. It’s kind of a flex to ask my friends with a Rolex what time it is at night or what’s the story about their watch. I scuba dive with this watch, wear it to the beach, office etc and generally don’t treat it well and the ceramic Pepsi bezel, glass and the bracelet are perfect; the clasp is definitely scratched. You can certainly save some cash getting it in the secondary market but, for me, it was worth every penny to pick exactly what I wanted with my serial number and my name engraved on the back. It’s not the most expensive watch I own but it starts more conversations and makes me smile more than my other watches.

Hello Teddy! I recently discovered the brand Baume & Mercier. I think the Classima with gold details just looks amazing. Would appreciate if you could make a video about these watches. Thx for another great video.

Absolutely adore my Nomos Orion. Goes well with everything…I get a special rush wearing it with jeans, a hoodie and boots. What’s a suit? They’ve been collecting dust.

Baume et Mercier clifton or Hampton. Love them have one of each wear to work everyday.

That Junghans Meister is gorgeous but a bit pricey for a hand-wind movement and acrylic crystal. That being said, I might still go for it.

I have the Blume et Mercier with the blue grad dial. Most of my watches are sportier higher end. But for those dressier occasions this is superb and punches well above its weight.

Great topic and choices. Bit annoyed about the on paper changes to the two Tissot watches. Maybe they'll be better received in person

Hey Teddy, I know you've done videos on the Omega Constellation Globemaster, and the vintage Constellations. But what are your thoughts on the newer 39 and 41 millimeter Constellations? (The ones with the claws.)

A very good and informative video about an often overlooked segment of the market. Thanks Teddy.

The Hamilton Intra-matic (Champagne dial) is absolutely fantastic and an incredible value for money. I love mine!

Would love to see a review of the Rado True Square series. As I'm a fan of the series and don't see you talk about Rado much

SRPF53, a decently priced Presage with a sapphire crystal. I would still prefer a 6r35 but still a great piece in comparison to other Seiko watches for the same price.

It’s definitely a beautiful watch and I own one. I do wish it came with a 6r35.

I love your videos! I’m a big fan! Could you please do a video on the Frederique Constantine Slimline Monolithic. It’s so intriguing with its 40Hz Fc-810 movement. It’s so smooth it reminds me of a Grand Seiko Spring Drive. Thanks & keep up the great work!

That Longines Flagship Heritage champagne dial is gorgeous, most beautiful gold dial I’ve seen. The Hamilton too and great value but there’s something off with it being a Hamilton. Not exactly a dress watch brand.
