I shortened my driver shaft 1.5 inches to 44.25 and will never go back to a normal length shaft. I haven't noticed any loss of distance and feel much more comfortable swinging aggressively with the driver. One more thing that help me was to go to a midsize grip with a few extra layers of tap. Now it feels like I don't have to grip the club quite so tight.

Many thanks for this video. I have tried a shorter shaft and it certainly helped consistency without any great loss of distance. However, I ended up changing to a normal length 40 gram shaft and choked down when the fairway was narrow and this seemed to have the same effect of keeping the ball much closer to the middle of the fairway. I think, as with all golf, what matters most is what gives you the greatest confidence. For me, it has been really helpful to watch your videos when you try out lots of different options since it led me to find what works for me.

John Daly said just lower your grip on the shaft, no need to shorten it. That way you will have more control rather than holding it at the heel of the grip. And it work like a charm for me, never bothered to change my shafts to shorter ones.

Hi Andy. Very disappointed to hear about some of the complaints omg it’s a physical game and you do a great job. With respect to shaft length. I picked up a Brnr Mini in May and my driving has improved so much and I believe it’s completely down to control and hitting the middle more often, improving strike. I didn’t see a huge fall off in distance because I actually hit so much more consistently. I also turned down the loft to maximise the firm ground. Had a break through injury and turned loft back up to the standard 11.5 and with the now wet ground was a little perturbed by the result. So will try again at 9.5 and see where that takes me through the depths of winter

I went extreme and experimented with a 42” and 40” shaft in my driver. I really enjoy swinging both. Yes, I lost distance compared to the 45.5” shaft, but the difference in control was worth it. WAY worth it! Like I tell my golfing buddies, “You may hit it past me, but my next shot will be from the short grass. Not the woods!”

I was volunteer caddieing for a ladies tour pro. She ducked it into the woods on a par 4. Stood over wood chippings and dirt, she took out her 9 iron and hooked the ball with so much venom, it sailed over the rightside bunker to 3 foot from the pin. She gave me the club and said completely deadpan, “Fairways are overrated”. 😂

Andy, Great videos! I have shortened my PXG Black Ops shaft by 2”, and my first few trips to the driving range and golf course appear to be resulting in a SLIGHT improvement in distance and a BIG improvement in accuracy (fairways hit). To shorten the shaft, I had to buy a weight kit and re-weight the club to get back to a reasonable swing weight. My thought on choking down on the grip is that it will have an impact on swing weight (by as much as 10%) … and the act of choking down will add another degree of variability (sometimes 1.5”, 2.0”, or 2.5”). The shorter shaft is certainly less subject to variability than choking down on the shaft. Robert

Thanks for the video, choking down is something I have done in the past and has worked. I recently lost my swing and couldn't hit my old driver at all, so I cut down the shaft to 44" and started hitting straight again and longer than before because my confidence was up and I felt I could swing away without fear of loosing it left or right. before I was averaging about 210y carry and am now hitting the same driver 230y and 240-255 total. Made a huge difference on my second shots and has got me shooting my handicap or better. Just need to get the putter working like it used to and I think I can start challenging my best rounds from years ago. Oh, and I did order a new Cobra driver with 45.5" shaft so I'll choke down on that one until I can hit it with out fear. Then when I'm confident I'll start moving up the grip until it starts to get away from me again.

Hannah A, takes it on this one Andy. Choking down it OK but, it can make you use the wrists a little more, liable to pull, but its down to each golfer to decide if it helps them. Control is a great positive, hitting fairways and greens is the aim, regardless of how it is achieved. Great video Andy as ever, cheers to you both.

I’ve commented before on shorter driver shafts with no response, but cutting down the shaft affects the swing weight significantly. Even at 62 years of I still have a lot of club head speed and shortening the shaft does the opposite for me and I spray the driver right. And it takes mad skills to add liquid weight to the head for proper swing weight. The pros have such fitters, we don’t.
@Keef1664
@Keef1664 24 күн бұрын
If you're speed with driver is over 100 mph then you're probably right. If it's less then you're better off with a lower swing weight! Just takes a bit of readjustment in tempo so try it, you might like it.

Great video. I am 6'1 and use a 44 inch Driver shaft. I tried choking down prior to changing and it just didn't feel right, the drop down to 44 inch's has added a head of control and I have actually picked up distance due to the better control and more drives coming out of the centre of the face. For me this also works and have taken the same approach with my woods and hybrids with the same result

Thanks for the video. That sounds like a great day to me and the slower pace of the video, scenes and music were a pleasant switch. I’m looking at trying to grip down as my 45” PXG driver hasn’t given me the accuracy. My thought was to take a couple rubber bands and loop them around the grip at 1 or 1.5” in and experiment with gripping down because like you, I prefer to have the wider edge of the grip at the end of my left hand. I’ll experiment and see what optimal grip down is so if I cut down the shaft, I’m not just guessing at how much. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts on the subject.

I find your views interesting on the driver being I am a virtually a complete novice and always found the driver the hardest club to get on with. I have just found the time to be able to get out with my dad and some of his mates. And then going for a fitting very shortly. Being 6 ft 2 nearly my junior Donna's I'm not quite cutting the mustard. And then probably look for some second-hand clubs in my range. I am actually left-handed but never had left-handed clubs when I was younger. Only some 1960 / 70 s in the shed. My aim is to get a handicap by this time next year your videos have helped inspire me to get out there and get involved. I have probably only played five rounds in my life. 3 on canvey Island 25ish yr ago. 1 Montego bay Jamaica 20yr ago . 1 Nudgee Australia 15yr ago. Nearly forgot the par 3/9 hole at Bunsy downes in Essex. See you out there choppers, any meets you arrange in the future I would be up for it. I could always ask Ron as well. Hi Andy. Great job as always. I recently did this with my "normal" driver after purchasing a TM Mini last year. Going back to a 45.5 inch shaft felt unnatural after the Mini, so I sourced a shorter but heavier shaft and put that in. Accuracy has gone up while distance loss has been negligible. Plus playing time drops because I'm not in the long stuff every other hole searching for my ball. I would recommend it to people that haven't tried it. Not a panacea by all means -the swing still makes the most difference- but when you can concentrate more on where you want the ball to go rather than how it gets there the game becomes that much easier.

Shorter is better for me also. I learned that by gripping down first and after a while I cut my driver down by about an inch and a half and added a little lead tape to get the weight right. I also grip down on all my clubs longer than an eight iron by a little bit. Especially at the beginning of a round until I find some rhythm. It’s also a great way to get better contact with woods off the deck. If my striking comes around that day, I may go back to gripping normal, but honestly if I grip down all day, I play better all day.

Hannah D this week - I've been struggling with driver so had a Trackman session with Nick Taylor at ForeGolf. A shorter shaft proved straighter and more under control. As an interim measure, I've put a ring of electrical insulation tape below the white pattern at the top of the grip. This gives me a consistent reference point to take up my grip lower down the shaft. Will try this and see where it takes me. I once had a driver with a 3wood shaft, which worked well. Eventually, of course, I got greedy for extra yards and went to a full driver shaft.

Cut down shafts really work, I’ve been doing it for the last ten or so years. Got sick of spraying balls around and having blowouts on otherwise good rounds (i.e. just a casual golfer & 88-92 is my target when I’m having a good day). Realised with a good grip, an easy 2/3 swing and 43.5” driver shaft I can reliably get 230/240 yards with a light fade.

“Andy D” Shaft length, I have my shafts + 1” minimum, I am 6’2” and now a sixty eighteenth year old and just starting to loose a bit of length all around my game so it’s a way for me to keep up a little bit but I also have the option to go down the shaft if I need a little more control or take a bit off a shot. My view is that have the full length shaft, if you have -1” which for me would be -2” ( all my shafts are +1” as I said earlier ) you then have the option of the extra length if you need a bit of “Overdrive“ to use an old motoring term. Great golf course and the video really did it justice, but alas your comments, Starbucks coffee nice?? McDonalds breakfast fit for a king??? But then being fortunate enough to be resident in Spain where we can get great café for less than 2€ virtually on any street corner café or a lovely fresh breakfast for less than 5€!! I used to grip down, and it did improve control, but I picked up a TM Mini Driver (11.5 deg) a couple years ago. With the mini I have much better results, and a lot more FIR's. Funny thing is when I play with my younger brother, I have a Mini Driver and he has a Krank with at 47.5in long!

Will try this next time out, I love my G430 driver which is the most forgiving I’ve had. With an handicap of 31.4 I need all the help I can get.

I use a TaylorMade mini driver: driver head on a 3 wood length shaft. But now I'll have to try choking up on the regular driver (which has been banished from the bag). Maybe choking up gives more leverage to sped up the release. Seems to be the same idea behind choking up on a baseball bat.

I use a 44” length for my TM M5 10.5 driver set to upright. I am experimenting with my TM M5 3-wood set to 13.5 with the same length shaft and using it as a make-shift “mini-driver”.

Both will change your swingweight which can affect your swing by making the club feel significantly lighter. When you cut down the shaft you really need to increase the driver headweight by adding a few additional grams to maintain your SW (you can get aftermarket weights on the internet for most drivers). The problem with the grip down method is that you will not be as consistent because head weight will not have been changed as set for longer shaft.

I’ve got a Callaway mini-driver and can’t see myself ever going back to a full length driver - every brand will be producing mini-drivers, probably starting next year. I can’t comment on choking down on a driver for the above reason, but I’ve got plenty of experience choking down on Irons. I like to play a bit with just a half-set of club (7 clubs). When I do, I only carry a 7 & 9 Iron + a SW. The 7 & 9 choked down become a 8 iron and Pitching wedge, respectively. So my choking down on the club is more to do with versatility than controllability. I have no issues with the control of these clubs when choking down. That said, I would prefer the “feel” in the hands/grip that my proper 8 iron and Pitching wedge give - but it’s a satisfactory compromise I’m happy to make so that I can enjoy just lugging around 7 clubs instead of my full set.

I got fitted 2 years ago on your recommendation at clarks. And the outcome was an inch off and I've not looked back. Like you I just don't like the feel of choking down on a driver. Great looking course Betws-y-coed I'll try and get our 4 ball to give it a try next year . Another great video nate cheers

Great video as always Andy! I like choking down since it gives me the option to go back up for more distance when needed. I use the Golf Pride +4 grips as that makes the lower part of the grip feel better when choking down. Cheers!

I’ve actually tried cutting an old shaft down to the same length as my 7 iron. I didn’t add anywhere near enough lead tape to bring it up to my swing weight so it was really light. Lost some distance but gained lots of control. As for choking down I do NOT like the feel. So I play a 43.5” driver.

Dear Average Golfer Another great video. I think am with you You have convinced me a shorter shaft is the way to go You are in good company GOAT Jack Nicluaus used a shorter shaft in his driver too throughout his career Albeit it may have been only a quarter of in inch or maybe half an inch shorter than standard.l look forward to seeing Mc D and Starbucks labels on your clothes ' a breakfast fit for a king' :such gratitude Although you may end up losing your amatuer status😃 The course looked magnificent too You need a label from them too. I liked your concern for thier viability You are a great ambassador for golf for us older golfers How rude of people commenting on your breathing Fully enjoy the fresh air whilst you can. l note you won the photo competition when H was n't there. But l couldn't help but notice H photos where better today Maybe they have more time to focus whilst you are focusing on the golf The photos are a nice finishing touch to what looks a great day out The pizza looked great too Another label for your jumper?😊 I forgot to ask about last week's great video ( senior moment) a wedge or a chipper in the bag? Chippers seem to be all the rage. I fancy one as l am finding chipping harder not easier as l get older. Maybe you could review them please?

With the shorter shaft you can dial in swing weight to how you like it. Also I find it hard to choke up to the same spot every time if I use the longer shaft and the grip is skinnier for my top hand. Who knows what the swing weight feel is when you choke up as test have shown choking up 1 " and a cut 1 " shorter shaft are not the same swing weight. I don't want to put that much thought in to it so cut it the length you want and add weight to the head to get it the swing weight you like and be done with it.

I prefer longer shafts, like in niche clubs such as the Heavenwood or the Apex UW. Less dispersion works for me via larger grips.

That pizza looked amazing. You can really hear that awful sound the PXG putter makes. Aluminum bat. I didn’t go shorter driver but went TM mini driver. Sort of the same idea and it’s been great off the tee.

Another great video Andy, and what a stunning course 😍 If I'm struggling with Driver or its early in the round and i haven't got going, or its a particularly challenging drive i will choke down on my driver to (hopefully) get more control at the loss of (posssibly) a few extra yards and i feel more confident stood over the ball.

I play a 46 inch driver, and I find that, if I really need to get a low flighted driver to go where I want it too, I always have the option of choking down on the grip and placing the ball a bit back and teed lower. Most of the time (I say again, most of the time) I get the result I want. For me to choke down on the club, though, I have to make a conscious effort to do it, as my natural grip position is within a half inch of the end of the grip. Sometimes force of habit leads me into places unknown to most mortals, when my strike gives me a low push right ball flight that is way off my intended line. I have a 6th generation PXG driver in 44 inches that I can play, but I really feel like the lack of those two inches really reduces flight and total yardage. I much prefer my old F9 with the longer shaft; it is at the minimum more satisfying when I strike it well.
I tried JUMBO grips on my irons and this happened.....
