TSM I'm 47 and can barely finish playing hoedown (I'm a drummer) without collapsing from exhaustion. And he is one of the coolest, in an interview he talks about how he loved touring and recording, unlike so many musicians who whine about having to tour. Carl accepts everything being a successful musician entails and loves it. Rock on, Keith and Greg rock in peace r.i.p.

Me too, but also in 1970. Precision, musicality, what ELP was all about. Only Pink Floyd come close.

Nearing 70 in this video and still one of the all-time greats! Carl's solos are unimaginably inventive, replete with technical and artistic bravado, and remain to this day standards by which drummers are compared. Few rock drummers, save the great Neil Peart (R.I.P.), can captivate an audience for 8+ minutes like Carl.

At 8:20 when he's rolling on the snare, his sticks are almost vertical. Nobody that I've seen has ever incorporated that in the drum solo. Carl is amazing. Going to see him in November of 2021!!

I can't imagine how he accomplished this in the 70s, let alone in 2017, when he's 67 years old! So much energy! Mind-boggling! The man clearly is not from this earth.
@Crezelltree42615 жыл бұрын
Kristin Zelber:He obviously has to be in great shape for a man his age.You couldn't do what he does & not be.Drumming is purely physical.Age is not always a barrier when it comes to your passion.This man inspires me.I'm not a drummer but I love seeing people good at what they do regardless of age.
@Assimilator7023 жыл бұрын
If we shouldn’t be able to play at the age of 70 why don’t all us drummers just quit now and stop wasting our time? I don’t understand why people think life is over and some arbitrary age. If someone takes care of themself 70 is not too old to do many things.
@Crezelltree42615 жыл бұрын
His energy is amazing.The solo would exhaust the average drummer.Palmer, at his age,rocks it effortlessly.This man has a special talent unique above others.No way you can check out this solo & doubt it.

For his entire 50-year career, he has looked like he could put down the sticks after a show and then relax by running a marathon. Pick any photo from any era he's played in, and he has always been fit as hell.

The best percussionist ever. He's always been in great shape. My very first concert was ELP in 78 and he's been my favorite percussionist ever since. It would have been awesome to see him and Neil Peart on the same stage.

Man, Carl is still very good. I would love to see him play an ELP set with Rachel Flowers and a good guitarist/bassist/singer who can sing like Greg Lake. This needs to happen. C'mon Carl, reach out to Rachel and give your fans a big thrill. Keith lives and breathes in the body of an incredibly gifted 25 year old blind girl. She needs to do a tour with the last survivor of her idol's band and we need to hear it.

@tonyvandergaag8765 You never know. I mean, Rachel was basically approved by Keith himself. He even sent Rachel his recently restored Synthesizer and asked her to try it out for him. Carl might say to himself, "You know what? Keith was good friends with her, and she loved him. I think Keith would've approved. I'm going to do it for both of them." One can always hope.

IMO, CP is the best drummer ever, but you can't say "no more drummers like this one", because Neil Peart is still playing. What I will never understand is why CP is always near the bottom of the list if you Google "greatest drummers ever", but yet John Bonham is always in the top five. This guy is always cheated. They talk about Bonham and Moon being the greatest. There is no contest. Palmer is the greatest rock drummer of all time.
@19Graywulf5 жыл бұрын
For some reason he's often overlooked? Maybe because people don't know their 'rock history'? Few younger folks will remember Atomic Rooster, or crazy world of Arthur Brown. ELP was constantly 'crucified' by the UK music press as 'pompous etc'. Yet they were truly the first 'super group'. Another great British drummer was cozy Powell, he should be in the top 10 of all time as well.
@Crezelltree42615 жыл бұрын

I think there's 5 drummers that are equal, understand the different styles, if You want to play, look up Buddy Rich, he's almost the first to do stuff like this. EVERYBODY HAS THEY'RE OWN STYLE. Close now, soft spot for Moon the Loon.
@WalkerLangley20024 жыл бұрын
I agree. Not to mention Bonham mainly focused on just the snare, toms and kick. Palmer on the other hand focused on everything, even if he played just one or two notes on a certain piece of the kit. I still regret even listening to Bonham in the first place.

Roger daltrey said that one of the drummers he wanted to sit in for Keith moon after he died was carl palmer esp since ELP broke up around the time keith died but roger was outvoted by Pete and john who both wanted Kenny Jones instead but Pete said years later roger was right about Kenny not being right for the who but yes there were a list of drummers roger daltrey wanted and carl was on his list.

Great comments on here from everyone. Been following ELP from day one! Never saw them live or heard Palmer solo. The military or jazz-grip used by Mitch Mitchell and I recently saw the Ginger Baker interview/ farewell tour and demonstration video. Ginger was using it as he spoke with the interviewer. I don’t want to really rate him, but he is one of the greatest of all time? He is in a class of his own, just like his peers. Keep on rockin’ in the free world? No one today can compare with the old-timers! The rock groups of today have dropped the ball and can’t surpass any of the groups or drummers of old. Thank you, KZbin!

Neil Peart of RUSH had announced his retirement from drumming a few years back. Loving progressive rock from the 60s and 70s, I loved ELP, Yes, and Rush to name a few. Rush fans were bummed and I suggested a day or so before that Carl Palmer could fit the shoes if Alex and Geddy wanted to continue. Both Peart and Palmer are stand out, super human drummers. Little did I know that Peart's illness was being keep secret from the public and he passed a day or so after that. My intent was to show what an incredible drummer Palmer was and to inject some hope. 2 different styles, equally as dazzling. My dream was Rick Wakeman on keyboards, Palmer on drums, Geddy Lee on bass. Lifeson and Steve Howe on guitars, and playing 1/3 yes. 1/3 ELP, and 1/3 Yes classics in a long 3-4 hour set.

Carlos Isais, now I really regret not attending last year's show, when I had a chance. Hopefully, Carl comes back this year. I'm so grateful that I did get to see ELP in the 70's during the Works tour, and in '92, during that tour. It's amazing to see Carl still so active, and still progressing after all these year's. Keith and Greg surely are missed, though.

Props to Palmer and his ability to still put out this sort of performance! Alas, I still love Neil Peart more. NP was the greatest from a composers standpoint. A brilliant mind, that never ever missed time or technique. Creative in his arrangements beyond any I’ve ever seen with bruttish driving force, and discipline of a drill sargeant. Yet these two are indeed cut from the same cloth. Respect...
