He seems to make a solid point if you ask me... He basically states the exact conclusion I have came to while deciding upon an upgrade for my Kindle. To be fair, Kobo seems to offer great hardware, but having already invested a bit in books on my Kindle, I may be slightly bias towards Amazon's offering. If I'd want to just download the books from torrents and let them on a device, I'd probably go with the Kobo H2O.

Calibre is the great equalizer. It frees me from the Amazon "ecosystem" and allows me to read any book on any reader for as long as I want. I got the Kindle Voyage when it first came out, and I just ordered the new Kindle Oasis for its warm light and bigger screen. I feel that these two readers are still the best for my particular needs.

+LazyScoutJace Pampered by the Paperwhite and Voyage, I reckon. There really is an appreciable difference. When you feel like upgrading, do yourself a favor and get an ereader with a 300ppi screen. Books, graphics on product packaging, posters, etc are all printed at 300ppi, sometimes more, but 300ppi is the standard. Get one with a frontlight as well, those are really handy. I remember spending years trying to refine a technique for using the lamp in my room to read comfortably, but I never did. Now, I don't even have to worry about it anymore, and the fact that it's a frontlight makes it super easy on the eyes. Happy reading!

Thank you! After seeing this, I decided to buy a Paperwhite. I'm very happy with it. Took a few days to get used to the touch screen sensitivity after the Keyboard Kindle! I decided against the 3G model, as when I estimated how many books I'd probably be able to buy with the difference in price between them, and how little wifi that would probably take to download them, the 3G free wifi didn't seem so free anymore! And I agree, the Voyage is just too expensive compared with the features in the Paperwhite. So thank you for making the choices very clear!

Ruben BFM getting a kindle really turned me back on to reading. i was finishing up book 1 of the game of thrones books and about to take a long flight so i bought a refurb kindle keyboard (i think it's the 3rd gen) and i have read so much as a result. obviously i wasn't going to bring 2 500+ page books on the plane with me so the kindle allowed me to finish book 1 and start with book 2. but beyond the weight benefits, i find myself using it all the time. there are months when i don't use it but then i inevitably pick it up again and start reading and can't put it down. i also find it makes me sneak a few pages here and there on the kindle app on my phone which syncs nicely with my kindle.

I used to be a kindle fan before I realised how restricted the format was. With kindles you're using a proprietary file format, which basically means you're limited to using Amazon hardware and Amazon apps to read a book with. Every other e-reader and most public libraries (especially outside of the US) use the epub format. So you can buy an eBook at the best price from any store and you know it's going to be compatible with your device (just like with MP3s). Unfortunately, while it makes sense to buy books from different stores if you're using a tablet, it's not so easy if you're using an e-reader. If you want to buy a book over WiFi you're locked into one particular store and you need to use a USB connection to download books otherwise. This is why I say, for the most painless and versatile reading... Just use a tablet. It'll be one less device to pay for and you get the added benefit of instant free books from your local overdrive library. They're also quite well priced too. The Asus memo pad 7 (recommended by The Verge) and the Google nexus 7 are both available for around £129 which is similar to what you'd pay for a kindle. So here it is: If you're an apple type of person and don't mind paying for an all-in-one experience at the cost of freedom then go ahead, get a kindle. Otherwise, if you want pure versatility you're better off with a tablet. (Especially if you like to pirate ebooks!) The kobo devices are great but the store is expensive. The nook devices are crap but the store is well priced. Meanwhile the Google play store is beats Amazon on titles and prices and you can also use it with any android tablet you like. Hope this helps.

I personally own a basic kindle and am in love with it. Why would you dis a kindle with such a great price. You said the screen was inferior? Why would you say it's inferior when the screen works great and that's all you need for a great read. Did you know that when you read something with a higher resolution you may seem to enjoy the experience but it actually strains your eyes and may have detrimental effects to your eyes in the long run. Don't disregard the kindle basic just because you think you own something more superior. And I swear to God you were probably paid by amazon to make this video.

"More books to read on Amazon"That assumes that I want to buy books or that I might be interested in supporting Amazon. I'm not. I read a minimum of 100 books a year, and cannot afford to buy every one of them. I mostly download books from the library (I am a member of two) and sometimes from Gutenberg Press. I would like to remind watchers that you can use libraries to meet a large part of your reading needs and use the money you save to buy the e-reader which supports both the Overdrive and Libby app and PDfs. Now, you may be wondering because that was not even discussed, which e-reader is that?

In 2019: The Kobo Clara HD is the best choice: Same price as Kindle Paperwhite. Same 6" 300ppi screen. No ads. Overdrive integration for checking out library books directly from your e-reader. Adjustable color temperature on the backlight for nighttime reading. It is the winner in every single category except for *buying* books and in that it is not waterproof while the new Paperwhite is.

Kobo has more formats. Yes, that could be right but with Calibre that doesn´t matter at all. I have transformed Epub, pdf and docs easily and sent them to my kindle without any issues. Thing is... You aren't at all "committing to an ecosystem" unless you ONLY use Kindle, and the only excuse for that is simply being uneducated... Most other ereaders give you much more control over how you use them. Hell, I rooted my Nook, and can run the Kindle and Kobo apps anyway, along with dozens of useful Android apps. So with that in mind, look at the other features. The Kindle doesn't have waterproofing, doesn't have physical buttons, has a worse backlight than most of the competition. And you get freakin ADS on a piece of hardware that you supposedly own! And your little point on selection and price: I would bet you my salary I can get every single book you get from Amazon for cheaper, using a source that benefits the author more than Amazon does.

I did a lot of research and came to the conclusion that the Nook Simple Touch was the best option for me. Balance of price, build quality, ease of use, and design that allowed for comfortable grip for hours of reading. I've had it and loved it for nearly three years at this point, I think. No idea why he shit all over Nook. I usually purchase my eBooks anywhere except B&N and sideload. His review was mostly over his preferred shopping place over hardware, it seems; and that shouldn't matter for a wise consumer.
@illitero
@illitero 9 жыл бұрын
All true, but that ignores the point that I made that other outlets exists other than the major ones fawned over. The result being lack of DRM/proprietary formats and titles with multiple options of format. So then, again, if an individual were wise with these options, it comes down to hardware. I liked the Nook Simple Touch because it had the best sideloading policy at time of purchase. I have a decent sized library with none of them purchased from B&N.
@illitero
@illitero 9 жыл бұрын
I meant policy as referring to what the companies allow their products to view; not all eReaders are as open as others. I have no clue what your're trying to prove. I appreciate the intelligent discussion, but I swear we're debating facts from the same side of the table, haha. All we're doing is corroborating each other's points.

"What I mean" can be "easily found" by "reading words" that I've typed. I don't give a shit about popular outlets that have proprietary formats. Many people don't give a shit about popular outlets that have proprietary formats. There are so many more reputable outlets that respect choice in format and flexibility, and end users that take advantage of that. Amazon isn't the end-all of digital literature. You're being so obtuse it hurts, dude. Please stop.
@illitero
@illitero 9 жыл бұрын
There are authors and publishers that offer DRM free content. And for those that have DRM like Google, it can be registered with any standardized formats. _That's all I care about._ You clearly know your shit, I'm not contesting it. You seem to love your Kindle, and that's perfectly fine. Coming across as some Kindle evangelist slurping down Amazon spunk like a good little boy isn't fine, nor does it make me care. Neither does analyzing and quoting things I say like some smarmy douche. You demand clarification on one of the least important things to clarify. You're running circles with your self-aggrandizing, pseudo-intellectual attack and talking down to me like you're disciplining me for some grievous EBOOK CRIME, so for that: fuck you. This is done.
@illitero
@illitero 9 жыл бұрын
FINALLY, you state your point clearly. No idea why you didn't start with that. Brand doesn't mean anything to me, and I know I've been clear about that. I listed what I liked vs other options, yet stated I have never purchased anything from B&N. Hardly an endorsement. I like the simplicity and lack of flash; I wanted to READ. I was also clear that I purchased the thing nearly three years ago. A lot has changed, I'm sure. Amazon's features are great for people like you that can take advantage of them. Again: that's cool, no problem there. Saying that I liked something doesn't make me hardcore for it. Arguing and "running circles" and talking down about somebody's preference because they don't match your preferences is very much self-aggrandizing, because none of it matters. I enjoy what I enjoy, and you enjoy what you enjoy...which is apparently behaving like some stuffy 19th century English professor. "Ohhh my lexicon is infinitesimally larger than yours ohhh mmmmm! I'm a very important and cool person attacking people about eReaders mmmmmmm! IF I COULD I WOULD STUFF MY BOTTOM TO NEAR BURSTING WITH TINY, DELICIOUS QUOTATION MARKS MMMM!!!!!!" Haha, I'm having fun now! You're far from stupid, but you're dumb with how you approached this. So...fuck you. Again. And you're not allowed to have the last word on my comment, so double fuck you, you weird nerd.

I have updated several of my kindles to that alternative os with great results! You are able to switch between the two operating systems easily. Also there are several kindle versions out there that you can easily pickup a used kindle 2 or 3 for less that $50 in great condition. I personally picked up a kindle 2 for $33 plus shipping on ebay and then installed my os on it and had a great ebook reader that if damaged I didn't have much in it. ***** You get ads for a cheaper price. If you don't want that, pay a few bucks more(I mean a single ebook will often cost more than the difference) or just wait for the next big sale and get it even cheaper without ads. What is indeed ridiculous is the amount of people expecting lower prices without any downsides. It's not like Amazon doesn't tell you upfront that the cheaper version has ads. It's not their fault that so many people are stingy.

Ultimately, Apples iPad Air 2 is the best e-reader you can buy. If you cat afford that, get the iPad mini 2.- The Verge

I enjoy hating on the Verge as much as any other commenter, but this video didn't come with a strong bias and came to the same conclusions I did when I was looking for an eReader during Black Friday. The Kindle is better for an average Joe but the Kobo Aura is more versatile (plus it comes with virtually unsecured Linux for better hackability). I bought the Aura because it was much cheaper then.

I use to read heaps, But I sorta lost intrest for a while, after getting a kindle paperweight I was reinvested because it's so much easier. consistent weight, don't need a light. AND BOOK DEMO, letting you preview the first few chapters of ANY book and buying it immediately, honestly I don't think I can go back to clumsy paperback books and awkward holding positions if your at the beginning or end.

I think the navigation is way better on a Kobo than kindle. Kobo are more tab oriented, so you can see more info on the same screen. Kindle has to load more pages to do anything, so it takes longer.

Miles off the mark. Keeps saying "it's just about the books" or "Kindle has everything you need". Except it's 2018 and they still can't sort the colour temperature of the backlight. Bright blue/white light for a device many people use before bed is simply unacceptable. The Kindle is only marginally better than the Kobo Clara HD but even if the gap were 10x as big, this is a dealbreaker.

I disagree with his statement that ebook tablets are bad quality and overpriced. They use a different kind of screen technology (Google it up) that is more expensive then a regular LCD panel, that is why they don't compete against tablets spec wise.

I have both the nook touch and the kindle the kindle died after a software update. It was 1 month out of warranty. I contacted Amazon executive offices and they sent me an email stating that they would not replace it. I was a prime member and did a lot of shopping with them. I will never buy another nook because they simply do not stand behind their products. The nook is still going strong even though I purchased this 2 years before the kindle.

Just build an e-reader like this Russian Yotaphone: one side is a LED (or AMOLED) screen, the other side: the best e-ink screen available! We all want to be able to read comfortably, read outdoors and save battery life too, aren't we? And please: for comfortable .pdf reading we need a minimum 8" screen and better hardware/apps. Better yet: make a screen a standard letter size for .pdf files, or even larger. Hey Kindle, Kobo and Onyx Boox, are you listening?

Kobo is the the e-reader with the best features. Expandable storage,bigger sorage capacity, broad veriety of file types supported and it's has the better design. I live outside usa and don't get most of the special offers with kindle so it is not "THE BEST E-READER" it's purely subjective. Besides all this talk about platform is unnecessary because if you want to save money you can just buy the ebooks from amazon and then just transfer them your device. So in essense this video is nothing but a cleverly disguised advertiesment.

Thank you, I have two paperwhites, one is wifi only, one is 3G with wifi, plus the kindle gen 2. The worst thing for me is the paperwhite with 3G, the battery wont charge, Amazon tells me it lasts 5 years, mine did not. I cannot buy a new battery, Amazon do not sell batteries, Amazon’s advice? But a new ereader. I am a pensioner, I spend a lot of my day reading, but I can’t afford to buy a new ereader each time I have a battery malfunction. There is a company in Texas which sells the batteries, maybe twenty or so dollars, postage is a lot, $50 but after placing my order they informed me that new shipping laws won’t let them ship to Australia. So...I am stuck with a device I love but cannot charge. I bought a Kobo years ago, but haven’t used it, I think I have three books on it, maybe it is time to use the Kobo. Thanks for the information, maybe I should stick to my iPad forget the paperwhites.
