When our Pacifica hybrid was in ev only mode(which was most of the time) it was great. I wish it was just the same van with a tesla powertrain and it would have been perfect. Kyle, EQS small correction. You can keep AC on after leaving vehicle, but they don’t call it dog or pet mode. I use it frequently in Florida when going to a second grocery store. You can also turn on AC from the app. When out to dinner with friends, I dazzle them returning to a cool car. Of course , this nifty feature is also available in every Tesla too.

Cool test and I generally agree with the results, but would also say I went with an R1S because of the cargo capacity with all seats in place. The small amount of extra room with rear facing car seats aren’t needed for very long and I prefer the upright seating positions in the R1S. Then you get just an enormous amount of cargo capacity on top of that. I get not all families are looking to road trip with the whole family plus all their stuff, but we do and we love it. Especially putting all our dirty or sandy stuff in the frunk, such as all our beach chairs and canopy etc when we hit the beach in San Diego.

I checked a Kia EV 9 with my wife today (with 6 seats). It is a big car with a lot of space for familys. Perhaps a little bit to wide for our Garage. In europe older garages have an relativ narrow "door". In the EV 6 and perhaps also in the EV 9 you can activate the clima with your App on the mobile if you are outside the car. But a Petmode in the car would be nice and easier. I like this test. When our kids were young, we went to holyday with 5 kids. The Citroën C8 was the best car we had in this time, because of the space.

I really appreciate this review. Car seats should have about two inches between the car seat and the seat in front of it. This allows for movement of the front seat during a crash and wont hit the car seat. Anyone over 6 foot would not be able to sit comfortably with a rear facing car seat behind them in these vehicles and they are largest EVs out there. I am super excited for electric minivans to come to the US. Hopefully they will have more room.

I have a R1S quad gen 1 and a MX Plaid. Oh yeah, and 3 kids in car seats. They're both amazing cars. Can't go wrong with either. MXP is more refined. R1S has way more space and 1 more seat. R1S gen 1 frunk is huge, and can legit hold 3 sets of walking bag golf clubs plus extra stuff. If I had to choose I would pick the R1S for practicality. Yes, calling the R1S practical is ridiculous. Just had to say that I LOVE this video. As a new dad of a 3-week old, she fits just fine in my model 3 with her stroller/bassinet/bags/etc. But getting everything in and out multiple times per day, I can tell is going to be painful so I’ve been cross-shopping electric SUVs lately even though I won’t buy one before the end of2025 when we’ll have multiple options with built-in NACS (and the daughter is approaching 2 years old). I was already leaning toward the EV-9 and this has done nothing to dissuade me of that notion. Still want to see the Blazer and I’m waiting for the Hyundai equivalent to the EV-9, and of course the ID Buzz, but this video has REALLY helped me a lot already!

Exactly. Pretty sure for passengers the EV9 is probably more comfortable but if you have passengers and Luggage the Model X offers more space especially considering the front Trunk too. The EQS with 3rd row is basically only usable for passengers because there’s no space for luggage left

Where to start! I appreciate the review. Some great points, and I think the final assessment is correct, as much as I would want a Rivian as a gearhead. I’ve got three kids, one at each stage of car seat in case you ever want to try this in the Austin area, we’d be glad to volunteer. My wife trucks them around in a Yukon with captain seats, and I just don’t see any of these able to replace it, except maybe the Kia. I do think we need to rethink family haulers being exclusively SUV’s in the EV era. I recently found my Lightning to be maybe a better road tripper than the Yukon on our beach trip. I was able to keep stuff I wanted clean in the frunk, and throw baggage and things I cared less about in the bed under the tonneau cover. The truck is wide enough to fit three car seats across and has a spacious cabin. I bet GM produces a Tahoe/Yukon with the big battery and acceptable all weather range for road trips, and it’s going to be a game changer. I’m already looking at the Sierra EV as my upgrade. Looking forward to more reviews like this, in addition to the performance content that landed me on your channel in the first place!

Kyle, the model X 6 seat (i have a 2018) recommends to turn off Easy Entry when car seats are installed. You can still manually hold the button but it takes longer since the slide motion drives slower. Both of our car seats still run into the front seats if it was enabled. My kids are grown but I find this very interesting and informative for families. You're definitely going to have to do a test on the ID Buzz and Lucid Gravity of many of the things you did here. And I agree, as much as super big SUVs like an Expedition or a Suburban don't do anything for me unless I was using them for camping it really does look like a beneficial vehicle for some one 6 feet 4 inches and taller. I'm 6 feet 2 and a half inches and drive a Model Y and it's enough for m but I have noticed that with my seat position it could possible be a little cramped for another tall person sitting behind me. Kia and R1S for the win but the small frunk and subpar software on the Kia is a problem. I will say that all of these companies should be watching this and taking note. Even Tesla considering it looks like they could possibly be developing their own van. Now, I'm not sure if that will be a delivery van, consumer van or robo taxi. But some of the same concepts should apply regardles what they end up making.

I don't use my frunk much. Actually, adding length to the front to increase frunk space is a lot less efficient than adding length to the back to increase trunk space, because of the height difference. This is also why minivans are so spacious: they chopped down the hood length and added length to the rear.

After owning my R1S for a year and a half it’s clearly a very well designed and the most capable all around EV SUV in my opinion. I would 100% buy it again. The R1S has significantly more storage capacity compared to the AWD EV9 (including the frunk space). For example with all seats folded flat the Rivian had 115 ft3 vs 83.5 in the EV9. Nearly 40% more. After having the R1S for a while I am surprised how many people actually comment that they like the looks of the headlights. Great review. I'd like to see more about road trip viability comparison. I feel like EV9 and EQS would be last place for a road trip since it can't use Tesla efficiently. I like EV9 a lot but I just couldn't imagine a 2000mi road trip relying on EA chargers.

The only electric cars that fo a 2000 mile roadtrip well are all over $100k so thats nor really sayinf much. The Lucid gravity would be the best and its 130k plus

Guys if you are trying to do 3 across car seats, while the latch system is convenient, the seatbelt install will give you some flexibility. Also, latch is only rated to a weight limit, which includes the weight of your car seat, so a lot of children outgrow the latch system by age 3. It’s never a dealbreaker to have fewer latches, as long as all the seats have rear anchors

Kyle, I'd love to get any kind of feedback from you on this, but first here's a couple of other things I would also consider. I'd just like to add, while the Kia EV9 is a great car, it really sucks in certain countries in EU. Slovenia for example, no app support at all and the software is just SOOOOO bad. I think that software and charging is a big factor to take into account, especially on road trips with tired, sick, hungry and overall just annoyed kids. The KIA EV9 had such big problems with charging all the time in Slovenia that the main reason I'm going with Model X is just the charging and software. Software and charging are a big factor with kids, we need to think about the little ones also, not just our comfort :) I was really thinking should I get an EQS or Model X for my family with 3 kids, (1 year, 4 years and 6 years) and I think that placing an order for Model X was the right decision. Reasons for me choosing the way I did and coming from an 2017 E class 220d sedan: Rivian not available in EU, didn't even consider it because of this. KIA was just an annoying car to me when testing. Software not fully supported and was just horrible / annoying and had charging issues in EU. Also for some reason I got motion sick as the driver, my head bobbing forward and back all the time for some reason. Model X just works and I like software and might be a bit biased since I grew up always wanting a Tesla. EQS was THE BIG contender for me. While more expensive the luxury and wow factor of the interior was pulling me that way and just coming from a Mercedes I can appreciate it. But after watching this video it eased my mind. Now the reasons I am still a bit offput by the Tesla. The interior is not a luxurious as it could have been even considering it's minimalistic design. It doesn't have any sensors like the other cars for parking, just tesla vision. Also I've seen so many videos about build quality issues overall or Falcon wing door issues. I'm just afraid of buying a car of this price range to be disappointed in the end. Also everyone says that Tesla service just really sucks. It's the time period where they MIGHT do an update with the front bumper camera and or some other stuff. But I have to buy a car like RIGHT NOW as I can buy it as a business expense (Country law incentive to go green) and it's already second half of August 2024...

That would raise the drag coefficient (e.g. R1S is 0.28 vs Model X 0.24). So the battery would have to go from 100kWh to >115. Doable in a longer wheelbase but not really Tesla's modus operandi.

Technically Y gets a 7 seater. And it would replace X as the smallest, but is by far (about 15k) cheaper than every 7 seater on here including the EV9

Hands down EV9 wipes the floor with those other imposters for a big family. Big= putting 7 people in the vehicle. Not even close. For imposters with 2 or 3 kids that don’t really need a 3rd row it may be a different story as some of the others score higher points for looks, premium feel, off road ruggedness, but just pure big family hauler, EV9 all the way. With that said, we still need a suburban size BEV on the market. I truly think if someone came out with it they could sell 75-100k BEV suburban size vehicles in the US at around the $80-100k level if build quality is premium

Great idea to remove the 2/3 bench seat. Reminds of old Mini Vans before the Stow 'n Go concept came out. Maybe Rivian can learn from this?

One use case most people don't think about when considering their most important requirements for a family hauler is flooding. Flooding is increasing in frequency around the country, with higher air temperature enabling the atmosphere to hold (and then release) much greater quantities of water. This is certainly most noteworthy along the Gulf Coast, Florida, and the Southeast, but increasingly much more rain is falling in other areas as well. A family hauler that can wade two or three feet of water should be scoring additional points in a number of regions. Normally, wading depth is a spec of interest to off-roaders, but I would argue that it should be increasingly important to people who have little interest in of-roading and simply want to be able to navigate streets and roadways around their homes in a flood.

As an EQS 580 owner, I’m very disappointed there is no frunk. I’d love to have the frunk and trunk well in EV9. EQS also has the weakest AC charging at only 9.7 kW. Come on MB engineers, get competitive. On the positive side, my EQS with rear wheel steering handsomely beats all these vehicles with a much shorter turning radius.

Kyle & team, question about R1S charging. I saw your ENTIRE 😅 Race to Vegas with the 3-row capable SUVs, and I’m wondering if the Gen2 R1S having a heat pump and purportedly better thermal management (per State of Charge’s video interview with Rivian engineers) will remedy the charging concerns that had Kyle convinced the R1S would finish dead last. I’ve been dying to get an R1S because of the usable 3rd row and off-road capabilities now that it has Tesla SC access… but I got spooked a bit by that video. TIA
