Rivian only makes sense as an ego/prestige buy unless you regularly face off-road conditions. Seemed to me he was way too kind to the Rivian in the scoring a few times (e.g., value and driving scores). The EV-9 is plenty fast and wins by light-years in everything that would matter to most buyers.

I love my EV9. Few things you missed: - The little plus in the mini HVAC screen brings up the full controls on the bigger screen. Then hitting that button again will take the big screen back to where you were before - the EV9 has the ability for you to manually pre-condition the batter without putting anything in the map.

The vent situation in the R1S has a super practical application. My wife hates having air directly blowing on her. I want the vents pointing directly at me. Since the vents position is software-based and linked to driver profile, when either of us gets in the car, the vents return to our preferred positions automatically. It’s actually great.

I respect Edmunds reviews, but this one was a bit off. The only thing the R1S and the EV9 have in common is that they both have 3rd row seats and are EVs. That's it. The R1S is a lifestyle vehicle....it is a vehicle dedicated *primarily* for off road adventures that *happens* to go on the road as well. I understand that the argument around Edmunds' office must have been something to the effect of "People don't take their vehicles off road that often, so we will review them as people will use them"....but that doesn't change the fact or purpose Rivian had for the R1S, which they have extensively spoken at length. This review is like someone grabbing a fire extinguisher, using it as a pillow, and then complaining that it isn't comfortable enough....because folks 'will most likely use it like a pillow" There are specific reasons for the internal and external dimensions, including the width of the vehicle, and they're all purposed to be able to make the vehicle get in places no other vehicle can. Although I appreciate Brian *so very lightly* touching on this, that should have been the whole review. The point of this review should have been how "road friendly" the Rivian was regardless being primarily designed for off road use....and how close it managed to get to the EV9 even though that car will take a trip to the body shop if it did anything remotely close to what the R1S is capable of. I think Edmunds' is professional enough and capable of viewing things objectively that I'm sure they will be willing to re-shoot this video and pick the right subject matter to study between these two.

This review seems very subtly biased or sponsored by Kia. The reviewer did not mention ev9’s limitations at superchargers and missed to mention a number of features of r1s. did not know there are charge ports in the 3rd row, did not know the 2nd row screen had a child lock preventing him to change temps, air compressor, 110v outlet, frunk can be used as a cooler, higher resolution cameras, more cameras and sensors enabling future upgradability, off roading capabilities, projector dynamic headlights, towing capabilities, lfp battery available in std version, way better mobile features. Kia also charges a subscription for using phone as a key. He also picked the worst exterior color and black interior colors of Rivian to compare with the arguably the beat exterior and interior colors of ev9. There was a very subtle undertone to make the ev9 sound better for family hauler function without describing the versatility of r1s.

A few things to consider about this comparison: 1. You had to go through an explanation between price, power, etc. because you picked variations of these vehicles that were not matched closely enough. Of course the Kia "did a little better" in braking than the Rivian, it's lighter. But, you also failed to mention that even the base-model R1S is a tad faster than the EV9 you tested. 2. You went on and on about the 3rd row in both of these vehicles and drew attention to the fact that you'd be uncomfortable if you had 2 clones with you for a long trip and had to ride back there in the Rivian. But, how common is this scenario? Are there families of 7, full-grown Mormons constantly driving around on road trips? The answer is no. Most people will use this vehicle for things like dropping kids off at school, going to soccer/ballet/baseball, taking the kids to the movies, picking up groceries, etc. The common family lists 2.51 people per family in the US, so there just aren't huge families driving around like you tried to portray. 3. You completely glossed over the fact that Rivian offers several options for this vehicle depending on what you intend to use it for. Not only can you choose larger, 22" wheels and lower-profile tires, but you can also select all-terrain, 33" tires on 20" rims, and that doesn't even take into account the available off-road package! Aside from that, you never even mentioned the drive modes! The Ev9 has 4 standard: Eco, Normal, Sport, and Custom. IF you buy the AWD version, then you get a Snow mode. The R1S has 3 on the base model of All Purpose, All Terrain, and Snow. Within all of those modes, you can still customize things like the ride height and ride stiffness. The Kia doesn't have the same amount of control within these. However, the R1S also offers buyers the option to include all of the following: All Purpose, All Terrain, Snow, Sport, Soft Sand, Rally, Drift, Rock Crawl, and Conserve. There's even a towing mode and every one of them has adjustments that the driver can make within them. You didn't even mention "Kneel Mode" where the R1S drops down to its lowest height when placed in park to allow easier access to the vehicle. 4. You talked for less than 30 seconds about the capabilities of the R1S for strictly off-road use to basically sum it up by saying that it had a lot higher clearance than the Kia and you shouldn't use it like that unless you wanted to visit a body shop. True but, lacking. While you did mention the camping mode self-leveling, you didn't talk about any of the other cool features like the built-in air compressor (which allows you to go off-roading, air down, then air back up before hitting the road, pump up your bike tires, soccer/basketballs, SUPs) or multiple charge ports in the trunk and rear cargo area. There are also things like exterior lighting, built-in safety gear, removable speakers, and other storage areas within the main cabin. 5. You were incorrect about a lot of features in the Rivian regarding things like the AC controls in the back and the charging plugs in the 3rd row. The Regen braking on this SUV is also amazing. It's much better at helping to retain charge than my previous Tesla was. 6. Storage you did elaborate pretty well but, again most people are going to only be using the front and 2nd-row seats. The 3rd row in my Rivian is always down so that I can accommodate all of my camera gear. Ultimately, this comparison was mismatched, in my opinion. The Kia is still a great vehicle, but it's not nearly as versatile as the R1S. If you're someone who goes to the mall more than anything else, yes. You may like the Kia better. But, to really represent the R1S for everything that it offers, you shouldn't have done such a lazy video. If Edmunds needs someone else, let me know.

@Tokamak3.1415 Ай бұрын
@@vzheka1981 The top end EV9 and base R1S have some overlap, but this review really seems slanted towards the Kia. The EV9 is basically a minivan in SUV skin. The R1S is designed as a truck. The EV9 will be much easier to repair if it gets into a fender bender at the supermarket or school parking lot where it will be spending 90% of its time. Lower insurance rates as well. The R1S will be costlier to own and operate, but if you actually intend to put that ground clearance to the test the EV9 would fail most tests that the R1S, Model X or EQS could pass. The reviewer giving the EV9 a higher tech score while not understanding how powerful the R1S' infotainment processor should pretty much tell you how much background research they did. The R1S could run most AAA games at 720P and possibly 1080P, not happening on the Ev9. I like the interior of the EV9 more but from a function standpoint the R1S appears to hit more wins on a radar graph.

Out of spec did a range test on the EV9 GT line and got 266 miles and completely drained the battery. I do not trust Edmunds number of 302 miles. Why would Kia undersell their range by that much? In that case, the base R1S is priced exactly in line with the EV9 as they are both comparably equipped except the Rivian has air suspension. For me, 270 mile range is just not enough for a family car that we will be taking on road trips so that is a deal breaker for me for the EV9. I also want good snow and off road performance for skip trips and off grid camping. The only thing the EV9 has over the R1S is passenger space and comfort, including ride and driving noise. So if that is a priority than go with the EV9. But everything else, including cargo space, range options, performance, off road capability, and IMO looks and vibe, go with the Rivian. So for me hands down the R1S is the better all around vehicle.

As someone who has really dug into the hidden underneath parts of the vehicles, all I have to say is don’t underestimate the value of a car designed, engineered, manufactured, and supported by large and long-established vehicle manufacturing company versus a small new startup. I love what Rivian is doing on paper but I recently just bought an EV9 myself. I hope Rivian is still around for me to revisit this same comparison in five or six years, and maybe the outcome will be different; but today, I easily landed on the E-GMP platform.

Agreed just unfortunate they won't stick a larger battery. 99.8kwh is good (although IDK if this is net or gross). But to comfortably get around 300 miles on the highway going 75mph you need a net/gross capacity around 125

@@RealElectech I didn't mean to imply that the parts were of low quality. I'm specifically talking about the design and engineering. Smaller startup -- even Tesla (maybe ESPECIALLY Tesla) -- tend to start with a clean sheet when designing a vehicle. In some ways, this is great. Back to the case of Tesla, it has allowed them to design their motors, cooling, wiring, charging, etc. in a very innovative and efficient manner. However, in many cases, it leads them to do things that are less than ideal with suspension, manufacturing processes, etc. because they don't have decades of experience of why their "this way seems so much better" methods might not be optimal in reality. Once again, look at Tesla... fantastic EV backbone wrapped in a total dumpster fire of a vehicle.

His only job is to review the cars, and before reviewing, it's better if he spends more time diving into all the features. He surprises me when he says Rivian doesn't have an option to adjust the distance for adaptive cruise, no adjustments for rear climate, and lack of charge ports on the 3rd row. He also mentions that they have a long-term R1t. Rivians software is not close to Tesla's but ahead of Kia's. Both cars cater to different markets same like some of the videos where they compare the new Santafe to the Defender 😂

I HATE Captains chairs!!! Yikes!!! I prefer the bench seat that sits 3 comfortably and then 2 smaller bench seats in the 3rd row. The rear 3rd row is for kids or smaller adults. Row 1 & 2 fit the big 6’3” linebacker men of my family well. I absolutely love the seats and my R1S gets so many compliments on them. The EV9 interior looks cheap and unrefined to me. The shape and color of them gives me the ick😖What you call trickery😮 which is a negative description of the R1S and reflects your strong bias throughout this review comparison is essential for some of us who want and need adventure vehicles. Driving a R1S is a supreme experience and I feel joy driving mine home from work or to the store and feel secure on more challenging roads and rainy weather conditions.

I had access to the Kia EV9 GT line as a Canadian customer did not want it, I had an offer on my 2023 Tesla Model Y AWD long range all written up, as I had such a bad issue with Tesla and their 7 pin towing connector still does not support 12volt AUX power so with the larger battery of the EV9 I thought it would be a great choice. Just before I decided to throw the switch I thought I would check BC and Alberta EV charging situation especially EC (Electricfied Canada) the main reason why I decided to sell my 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 was the DC charging situation, and on Plug Share it is far worse than it was last year. We have had great adoption of EVs in BC so the DC fast chargers are getting overloaded and the reliability due to the heavy use has gotten far worse, which is too bad, much more reports of 1 hour waits at chargers, with only 1 of the 4 functioning was the deal breaker, too bad as I love the EV9. I hear in the USA EA seems to be improving, likley at our EC cost. Forgot to mention my dealer has a 200 EV9 backlog, likely 2 years away if I order one now, I hear in USA much more readily available.

Over the past 20 years, the average size of American households has decreased. In the early 2000s, it was about 2.6-2.7 people per household, and by 2023, it had declined to 2.5 people. This trend reflects demographic changes like fewer children per family, the rise in single-person households, and an aging population. The gradual decrease is influenced by shifts in family structure and lifestyle choices. On what planet do you need three row SUV in the USA?
