I think the best option is the Richard Le Grand Odyssea. Its 39mm but compact and is a great diver for the money. I've taken it away on holidays swimming in the pool and ocean and it has never let me down. The Proxima PX1697 is another one that I've heard good things about but I've never handled one personally so couldn't say for sure. It's hard to find good affordable divers under 38/39mm. Unless you're looking to go down the G-Shock route with the DW5600.

I would recommend the Citizen NY0040 variants. Wear smaller and slimmer, vintage design from the 90's true divers and affordable. Another option would be a Seiko mini turtle. Can still be found new for under $400 and as great as the bigger turtle divers.

have a look at seikos solar sne line at 38.5mm if im not mistaken. good accuracy, good looking, not bad pricing. it has sapphire crystal, screw down crown and 200m wr as well.

Watching this 'cos I've already got one, this and the mini GS Presage gmt are the best value seiko's out there, especially as mine was only £360.
