Mtn Physio shares exercise advise for Eastons Bowhunters Basecamp.
Shoulder pain doesn't have to be a part of bowhunting. Too many people suffer from shoulder pain while shooting their bow and preparing for the season which can limit their success in the field. Dr. Preston Ward, Board Certified Orthopedic Physical Therapist, and owner of Mtn Physio shares his expertise with you on a few key exercises you can and should be doing regularly to prevent and recover from a shoulder injury.

I’ve had to lay down traditional archery for a year now and it literally about brought me to tears in a bow shop because I couldn’t come to full draw on a 35# recurve and taking advice from these videos has made me work back up to my 50# bow and I can look forward to getting me a new stick and string!!

Watching this at week 6 after a SLAP repair. Two more weeks until I can start using resistance, this video is EXACTLY what I was looking for and giving me motivation to PT everyday!

Hey doc the top of my front shoulder has been bugging me lately, haven’t been shooting much the last month but still bit of pain. Gonna try these band movements to stretch and strengthen 👍

Dear doc I’m 21 and new to archery, maybe 2 going on 3 weeks in, I’m shooting a 55lb compound and my left arm that holds the bow I’m starting to hurt when I draw. the pain is above the collarbone I believe the top trap? I’m pretty sure it’s over use imo because I’m shooting everyday for maybe a good hour or 2 or 3, any advice you could give on this situation? I’m trying different band exercises you suggest !

Hey welcome to the best sport around!!! I am sorry to hear about your shoulder! It sounds like overuse and I would suggest these exercises along with some rest. Shooting daily for 2-3 hours in a row is fun but a lot if your new to the sport. I have a dosing schedule for new archers I can send you I typically include a few rest days on longer days you shoot. Lots of conflicting information on impingement injury. When you used the resistance band to simulate drawing, you seemed to be drawing straight back, not raising your elbow above your chin/mouth. That is the proper way to avoid an impingement injury according to Jake Kaminski who has a few videos on this. However, when Stetson drew his bow, he raised his elbow above the top of his head, exactly what others say cause impingement injuries. I'm interested in your full take on this disagreement.

Impingement first off should never be used… it’s a terrible terminology that doesn’t explain what is going on. The true terminology that should be used is Sub Acromial Pain Syndrome. I like to keep my elbow about eye level. But really everyone’s anatomy is different so it really is subjective to each individual.
