Rotator cuff torn twice (second time was from letting down a compound bow at 70 lbs with a 90% letoff). This looks helpful, thanks! I recommend a follow up video with bodyweight only exercises as zero equivalent is nice sometimes too. 👍

Hey mtn physio! A couple months ago I tore my hamstring grade 3 level, I’ve been working out my upper body and rucking, when should I be able to start squatting weight and working out my legs? I haven’t tried yet because I’ve been scared.
@mtnphysio14403 ай бұрын
Hey there you should be doing some squats about now… strict hamstring focused exercises may be a little bit more. Love to look at it more and give you a more tailored approach message me at mtnphysio.com and we can jump on a call. Good luck looking forward to it!

High draw elbow causes me elbow pain. I am new to archery. Very late to the game (52yr) with former anterior and posterior labrum tears in draw shoulder. Surgically repaired with 3 anchors in each. My ROM is limited but according to Dr and physical therapist functionally sound. Ironically I'm having pain in my bow elbow(non draw) and bow shoulder. It goes away with rest. Iam working on stretching and strengthening them with your exercises. Also decided to get some private instruction to evaluate my draw technique.

Yes, please instruct us on how to balance our muscle groups to avoid injury. Worked jackhammer and air drills on construction for decades and rotators are really sensitive to use, especially if I do not warm them up before shooting. Warm up exercises would be appreciated before shooting. Good tip with the band.

I'm 70 years old and 170 lb. I have been doing squats three times a week for 4 months now. I do three sets of 20 reps holding 45 lb in each hand. Is that good? Or would it be better to do just body weight?
@mtnphysio14404 ай бұрын
That’s really good! Keep this up for sure! Just for kicks, maybe one time measure how many body weight squats you can do without weight just continuously. Let me know.

Lots of conflicting information on impingement injury. When you used the resistance band to simulate drawing, you seemed to be drawing straight back, not raising your elbow above your chin/mouth. That is the proper way to avoid an impingement injury according to Jake Kaminski who has a few videos on this. However, when Stetson drew his bow, he raised his elbow above the top of his head, exactly what others say cause impingement injuries. I'm interested in your full take on this disagreement.
@mtnphysio14404 ай бұрын
Impingement first off should never be used… it’s a terrible terminology that doesn’t explain what is going on. The true terminology that should be used is Sub Acromial Pain Syndrome. I like to keep my elbow about eye level. But really everyone’s anatomy is different so it really is subjective to each individual.

I just watched a vid by Kaminski saying the exact opposite. Granted he’s not a Dr it it highlights the ease with which people can get totally polemic about these things.
@mtnphysio14404 ай бұрын
Yeah I agree 💯. I’m talking from a bio mechanical standpoint to reduce injury to the shoulder, but I agree people can get so caught up on this and one sided they fail to take into account a lot of variables, mechanics, weakness, strengths and the entire bio mechanical and kinesiology aspects of it.
@bijano73204 ай бұрын
Is this the same advice and technique you’d recommend for traditional archery. I ask because the hand positions the string(supinated?) is the opposite from when using a release (pronated?).
@mtnphysio14404 ай бұрын
It is true the mechanics are similar but different.
@bijano73204 ай бұрын
Thank you for both replies! So you’d recommend the same High elbow, and push/pull draw?
@mtnphysio14404 ай бұрын
I like a push/ pull draw, elbow in a similar spot. Degrees can vary a little bit. but really it is building tension and keeping that tension built up. I think I am going to come up with a new video on this because I want to rephrase a few words and descriptions because it is really movement I that front shoulder/pec. I am in the process of building a recurve specific form too and have some fun ideas there to help. So stay tuned for that. Thanks for your feedback and interest
@bijano73204 ай бұрын
Looking forward to that! In the interest of science 😊 it would be great to get two folks of similar age/physique with no archery experience and have one learn your way and the other the common way (how I do it too so I’ll be trying your method now) and see which progresses with less strain and stress.

@Lizabethmoree-lv9bj5 ай бұрын
I ran into this mt physio guy looking at methods to draw a bow. I was struggling being new to bow hunting at 64 increasing draw weight. I’m pretty small and getting to 55 pounds has been tough. He showed a push/ pull method that keeps your draw elbow back and pushing forward with your post arm while drawing back elbow high. After putting this method to use I can feel the muscles in my ribs and back doing way more work. I went from 30 to 50 arrows a day in 2 sessions to 75 without any increased shoulder pain. This method gives me confidence I can get from the 49 I’m pulling to the 55 I want. All the other videos I saw on draw showed posting the off arm all the way out and reaching forward to the bowstring. That’s what i did last year and wound up with a very sore and inflamed shoulder. Posting that arm out caused me to reach past my nose with my draw arm and was starting with the bicep top pinched. I am very thankful for his video on draw that little detail change is going to keep me improving where I thought I might be stuck. Thank you I’ll be watching more, richnewcast

Thank you for the thoughtful comment! I really do appreciate it! You are exactly right! That bicep tendon can be a common issue. The best thing for that.. Other than what you did and change up your draw is specific bicep exercises. This is very important for archers and a key piece of the longevity pie! Glad to hear things are going well for you! If you had both shoulders replaced and the biceps tendons not reattached back to shoulder joints . Do you think that would make a difference in the amount of how much bow poundage you can pull. Even though I can do 25 pull-ups . A 60 pound bow is difficult to come to full drw. Want to increase to 70 . Use to shoot 80 pound bows . Back when was in my 40’s . Now 79 & want to shoot 70lbs.

I was taught to draw with the elbow high, bringing the bow up and lowering it to draw. I nearly blew out my rotator cuff just this past week. Haven’t gotten it looked at bc it’s feeling better today but, bad pain near shoulder blade, deep in the shoulder, sometimes in the bicep. I’m brand new bow Hunter and I’m a painter for work, would have sucked if I blew out my dominant arm 😂 thanks for the video man!

Yeah I have had clients respond to both. I am still trying to get some actual evidence with this. I do think that with the dorsum of the hand against your cheek it reduces tension in the bicep. But still to be determined
