Ah thank you so much for this. I want to try a slightly green aligned blue that's more of a light-medium to get a more old fashioned but bright feeling on sunny days but a Victorian gothic feeling on dull ones, but I've been very worried about that making the room too cool feeling.
@NicoleSage
@NicoleSage 6 ай бұрын
Sounds like a gorgeous vision! The only thing I will say is that any really dark corners suck the light out even more if they have a dark colour on them, so do paint an A4 sheet of paper with the colour beforehand so you can move it around the space and see how it feels on both bright and super dark days, it takes a while more to decide but it will alleviate picking a colour that makes it feel too cold, hope that helps!

I would try a colour like oval room blue. Try 2 coats onto paper/card and move it around the room under different lighting conditions - including in the evening with artificial light - whichever lamp you would actually use.

Very helpful, thank you. I have a north / east facing snug with plenty of glass facing the sea (east). It will have an oak cladding to the walls and has a curved ceiling on the west side of the room which will be oak clad up to the curve, then have an LED light strip across the top to light up the curve. I need a paint for the south wall (no window)and curved ceiling - The wall and ceiling colour needs to be seamless. I want it to reflect coastal but also be warm as we will mainly it in the evening. After your video I am thing Oxford Stone or Joa's white. What do you think?

Sorry for the late reply on this one, I must have missed it. Your snug sounds gorgeous, YES to Oxford stone and Joa's white, I love Oxford Stone and have personally used it in my own coastal design, a sandy beige/mushroom depending on the light yet warms it up too when needed.

LOVE your video. I watched too many before I found you! We have a north facing living room, no ceiling lights ..would oxford stone feel too dark? I want the room next to it (tons of light) to be Inchyra Blue or Haugue Blue...would that be okay?

Thank you so much! YES - we have Oxford stone in our north facing bedroom now, so does look like a sandy beige and sometimes a mushroom depending on the light, it feels cosy and the red undertones warm the room up. Love those two blue shades, just be mindful on dark days, those corners will suck the light and feel even darker so best to test the blue shades on a piece of paper and see how it feels as the light changes throughout the days etc.

Thanks for this! I am about to move my 8 person tech business into a north facing office. The ceilings are your typical dropped ceiling sound proofing tile with difusing lights and there are three large north facing windows. Our team is a happy engaged group need periods of intense focus and a calming environment might get us too sleepy LOL. I love bright colors. I'd already pinned blue hague for the small conference room but i was thinking about rocking out the main area with India Yellow -- crazy I know. BTW we work at standing desks and the chairs are red. Thoughts? Concerns? Advice? Am I nuts?
@NicoleSage
@NicoleSage 10 күн бұрын
Ah amazing, congrats on the move! Haha totally get that, love your colour choices. I am personally a huge fan of India Yellow, it's bold, bright and feels like a joyous colour. I think this would work in an office, Hay and Farrow's Cream are also beautiful yellows but a little bit softer which may feel more comfortable to work within, maybe grab a tester and paint a sheet of A4 paper so you can test in the space and see how it sits? As for the red chairs, go for it! Look up the 'unexpected red theory' ;) - very on trend for the year ahead.

@NicoleSage
@NicoleSage 13 күн бұрын
Morning! I don't currently have a kitchen video (but I will work on that!), without seeing the space, I would be inclined to go for a warm white, and then introduce colour with accessories in the space, something with an under lying green such as Off-White or Lime White would bring warmth without a yellow tinge that some off-whites bring. If you're looking for a bit more colour, something such as French Gray or Ball Green would work well with your maple wood units.

Theres a lot of white woodwork and on the shutters and windows. I also need a colour for hall stairs and landing to complement the reception rooms. The front of the house is west facing with a fan light over the hall door. Any advice please😊

Thank you! Okay, so for hallways unless you want to lean into the darkness, a nice neutral with slightly darker tone on skirtings is a great place to start, you can build colour but it allows the other rooms to be a bit bolder. SO many options in reality and combinations, but something like Schoolhouse White on the walls and Drop Cloth on the skirtings looks gorgeous, you can have fun with the stairs and introduce something bold and punchy here, terracottas and reds are really fun, or a sage green for a bit of warmth, if you want things more traditional, try Railings on the spindles which will add definition. In the sitting and dining room, another soft neutral will keep things feeling warm throughout the day, look at Oxford Stone, Old White and Bone. Happy to share some more suggestions depending on what types of colours you are drawn towards, there is just so many different ways you could take a gorgeous period house! :)

Great video! What do you think of F&B Single Cream? It's warmer than oxford stone with red undertones. It's part of the archive collection which makes me worry it's an unpopular colour and there are also no 'inspiritation' pics on the website

Thank you! I do like Single Cream, it's a lovely buttery yellow shade but not one I have worked with before. They have some fab shades in the archive collection, but the only worry is not being able to grab a tester pot first so I personally don't tend to use them. Single Cream could appear a little too yellow depending on the light.

But I'm really not sure what to do. Can you help me in my conundrum!
@NicoleSage
@NicoleSage 8 ай бұрын
@@emmaandrews3969 Thanks for watching :) Okay, so I would personally lean into an off-white with grey or green undertones which will pair well with studio green but will balance well with the light the room receives - look at Wevet and Off white. You'll have a gorgeous foundation then for the green to pop and any accent colours you have on the shelves. Definitely get a tester beforehand and see how it looks in the light, paint onto an A4 sheet of paper so you can easily move around the room to see how the light affects it. Hope that helps!

I have an original 1950s booth light teal and white and want to keep fun teal/coral colours and have grey kitchen cupboards. So my question is using a white that is warm to go right through to bring together whole area and then I'm going to use accessories to bring in darker teal, and earthy colours to combine the area but still separate living from kitchen/diner what do you suggest 😊 thanks for sharing your videos❤
@NicoleSage
@NicoleSage 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! Your kitchen colours sound gorgeous and fun :) Okay, so three warm whites I would recommend that will tie together your colour scheme and flow are Dimity - red based neutral but a perfect base for an earthy approach, or White Tie and New White - they have a subtle yellow undertone but pair virtually with any colours. I'd get a tester of each, paint an A4 sheet of paper with them so you can move them around the spaces to see how they feel with the light in the different spaces. I'd also look at School House White - it's a stony white but particularly works well with greens and blues so would be a lovely complement to your teal. Hope that helps! Nicole x

Thanks for watching! A warm orange is great for warming a space up, I’d definitely be inclined to pair with a warm white to balance the intensity of the orange, have a look at Matchstick, String or Dimity - they have warm undertones so will work well in the North facing space. Grab a tester first so you can see how they pair with your specific orange, hope that helps!

Hello again. This time a North facing snug with an East facing opening to a conservatory. Would Mizzle work on all 4 walls, or perhaps 3 walls Oxford Stone and 1 Red earth.
@NicoleSage
@NicoleSage 2 ай бұрын
Mizzle is soft and warm at the same time so yes, typically darker corners suck the light even more so I would recommend testing on an A4 sheet of paper first so you can move it around the room to see how the light reacts. I love the combination of Oxford stone and red earth for an earthy scheme, a bold accent wall can sometimes feel quite stark in contrast to a neutral, so I'd just recommend trying to tie that red in somewhere else into the room so it feels intentional, perhaps with a painted side table for example. Hope that helps! Nicole x

@NicoleSage Ай бұрын
Morning! I'd lean into something with a bit more definition so it will balance with the light the room receives and the oak trim, a green such as Lichen or Vert De Terre would look gorgeous, and soothing for a small bedroom. Alternatively, if the room receives a lot of light, something like French Gray which has both green and grey undertones to it.

Leaning towards Green Smoke in my NE facing living room. I have lots of oak furniture, floors, fireplace (contemplating painting that GS also) and many openings, triple window, front door, staircase on one wall, 2 sets of double openings and one single opening. I'm usually very good at this but this room has been such a challenge. Being here 10 years, last project to tackle. Any words of wisdom?
@NicoleSage
@NicoleSage 4 ай бұрын
If you want to lean into the darkness, use green smoke and colour drench everywhere, including the fireplace and ceiling! This will make the room feel darker in the corners that suck light though which is something to be aware of - alternatively, pair with something like Shaded White, green based white which will complement it and balance the depth of green smoke. Sometimes it's easier for me to visualise when I can see the space, so if you would like more advice, please attach an image to a comment on my blog so I can give more targeted advice, thanks! - www.sleek-chic.co.uk/2023/07/farrow-and-ball-north-facing-room.html

Carpet - avoid grey and go for a cream, grey makes a room feeling instantly darker. For walls and ceiling, I would colour drench with a nice warm based white, either yellow or red or pink based. Hi there, I have just found you! :) Love your videos very helpful. I have just been advising someone on their North facing living room but I am learning aswell. So was just wondering... she fancies Beverley on the the wall that faces you as you walk in and then needs a complimentary neutral for the other 3 walls. On F & B colour card it says the complimentary white is Shaded white No.201. Is this a warm enough neutral for this space? if not what would you suggest. Looking at adding reds and oranges/terracota accents in the room. TIA

Morning, thank you! If it's a very dark north facing room and she's happy to lean into the darkness and cosiness then these will work well together. Dark shades will look even darker in the darkest spots, they suck light and will make a dark green look almost black so just something for her to bear in mind. If she wants something warmer, and brighter I would go for James White as it has a slight green undertone so will marry the colours perfectly; tidd.ly/48jQorB

I have a few recommendations for you, Drop Cloth is a gentle mid grey beige, so its not too yellow or grey but will pair well with your existing setup, if you want to create a darker, cosier feel - tidd.ly/4g5uFWV Bear in mind that your darkest corners will look even darker with that type of colour so if you want something which is really going to add warmth and lighten, I would go for Skimming Stone or Oxford Stone which will complement your existing scheme.

Hi Paula, I've got you! One of my favourite subdued pinks is Sulking Room Pink, it's got a lovely moodiness to it but isn't overtly pink. If you want something a bit earthier, look at red earth - a colour drenched look on walls and ceiling looks amazing for a cosy room. These tend to be warmer without being bright, but mid blues and greens can look really good too, here are some I would look at; Studio Green, Treron, Calke Green and Blues - Stiffkey Blue, Inchyra Blue and De Nimes. I love either the warmer earthy shades or the darker schemes, definitely grab a few testers of your fave and sit with them in your space for a day or so to see how you feel with them throughout the evening light, hope that helps! Totally get this, we have a dog and it's filthy constantly! I would personally use eggshell paint on the walls like skirting, more durable and easier to clean unlike emulsion which generally ends up taking the paint off when you rub it. You could also do panelling if you wanted something darker on the lower part of the wall. Is your hallway dark or does it get a lot of light? I can then suggest some shades that would work best :)

Look at Setting Plaster, Templeton Pink, Vert de Terre, Cooking apple green, if something more neutral Oxford Stone is great, we have this in a true North room and has a gorgeous warmth to it - is this also for a specific room as that might help me with some other suggestions, thanks!

Thank you Nicole. I should have been more specific. It's the exterior masonry paint that I'm struggling with. The house is closer to west than north. The only bolder colour I have tried is Lichen, but it didn't look nice. So far Cromarty and mizzle are the favourites. Tried peinoir which looks nice at the back of the house but just grey at the front. the house is detached and has ugly lumpy pebble dash type render. Most of the pale shades look just white in the afternoon sun.

@NicoleSage
@NicoleSage 7 ай бұрын
Yes, both pair beautifully - however, pigeon used on all walls in a North facing space will affect how dark the room feels if you are just using Wimborne white on the ceiling. If half wall panelling or doing an accent wall though then that would work well. Although, there's nothing wrong with leaning into the darkness though in a North facing room though and using it all over.
