I can confidentely say that Race Driver: GRID is the racing game and it will *Never Ever* be something alike. It's strong career structure, neat features, team management, sponsorships, the whole atmosphere, the frenetic soundtrack, Ravenwest's presence and how intense the AI can be even how evident the rubberband is. It's the game that breaks the taboo that closed track racing games CAN be fun It's the definition of how hard racing can be in a videogame. I bet for how incredibly detailed the car damage models were that car makers wasn't very pleased but we just don't plain crash cars just for the sake of it. (but they are incredibly fun) we just learn how these race cars are fragile if you're not carefull enough so it's actually integral part in racing because we all know what actually happens in motorsports irl and not having a similar experience in videogame feels quite limiting for a genre that used to push the boundaries in the past two decades... the absolute thril to keep your car intact throughout the race. Thats one the things that made this franchise standout from Gran Turismo or Forza. As much as I liked few of the sequels like GRID 2 and Legends the first game is simply *undisputed* and it deserves more recognition. Excellent video!

One more thing I'd love to mention is the replay system. Got to get back from the game after a while of Racing Masters and realized how GRID 1's replay looked like an actual movie for every replay. The shots, the vibration, there are sense of speed almost everywhere, and all tied together with the aforementioned godsent of the fast-paced OST. I know, the replay system's not something big to contribute to the entire gameplay, but it's fun once every while to see how you looked like when you raced on the track, and GRID delivered the best one there is. It's hard to find any kind of replay system as great as RD:GRID had, even with later game titles.

For me, GRID feels like Eurosport, Speed Channel, or Motors TV: The Game. Especially since you can actually pick the Speed Channel as a sponsor for your team! As a 3rd-4th grader when the game was still fresh off release, I loved how Speed Channel's motorsports broadcasts genuinely celebrated the world of professional motorsports and made you feel like you were really at the race track. So to play a game like GRID that did that in video game form was an amazing experience for me, especially since DiRT 2 would release in 2009 and do the same thing with its extreme sports aesthetic (which I actually liked; contrary to popular opinion back then). It's somewhat disheartening that none of the sequels were able to capture the magic or immersion of the first game for me, but perhaps it goes to show just how special GRID 1 was.

Great to hear that even from a developer’s point of view, you knew that GRID was going to be as beloved as it is today! From watching developer insights and some of the images during the credits, the passion and enthusiasm for the game was visible everywhere :) Also, I hope that it wasn’t too shocking to watch this video with my shader preset; although I can appreciate the yellow filter of the 2000s in a way, it’s something I wanted to change to make it look more contemporary and more appealing to viewers who did not grow up with games having this kind of filter, which in my opinion looks a bit out of place nowadays.

@@mrxbas Hahaha, I very much appreciate the removal of the yellow filter :) There was actually a hardware bug on the x360 that meant the gamma curves were off - so lots of the games around suffered from overlay black elements. this was partially the reason why games of that time had a specific, look the "Gears of War brown".

The physics are far from great, making it hard to come back from more realistic racing games, but the sound, the visuals, the atmosphere, the unlimited challenges, the constant fight with Ravenwest... I simply love these masterpieces, and nowadays they run very well on Intel Integrated graphics (intel sponsored these games). You are wrong about one thing: The Audi is not the only way to win the LeMans series. First I hated that every seson ends with the LeMans races, but I practised and grew skills. I won the highest class with the cheapest LMP1 car (Lola?) and also with a used Audi. It was a challenge in most categories, but after some hours of practice I could beat some of the higher class cars with a lower class one. I still don't like the LeMans part, but the whole game (Especially the 1st one) are the true diamonds of racing games. Great content, keep on doing such! Cheers from Hungary ;)

Fun fact, a huge part of why the arcade but insanely precise physics worked so well was because the developers used dynamic wind force while braking, the car received a massive frontal downforce by faking braking with strong frontal "wind", this avoided massive issues with tire friction model slipping, brake locks and so on and was in part why it feels so good to drive cars in that game.

As a devoted racing fan (i'm huge sucker for gran turismo style games, but also overall track racing games) i consider GRID to be one of the pivotal titles for racing games, and pretty much a starting point for a new sub-genre. Grid combined track base of it's predecesor (and games like Gran Turismo, GTR 2) and mixed with agressive AI and crashes straight out of hardcore arcade game. This new brand of track based racing games that takes from both sims and arcades was so unique and brand new, that EA made NFS Shift as a direct response (sub series that i like EVEN more). And overall GRID set new standards for adrenaline felt in racing game. On top of that the artstyle was pure magic so it feels timeless and still beautifull. And as i mentioned before i like Shift and Shift 2 even more - with a bit more complex driving model, and cockpit view so immersive that you won't use any other.

I have always said that Grid is the best racing game ever.. Its attention de details is beyond imagination! I played it on release on PC! Then 6 years later, I replayed it on PS3 and the immersion was still the same. I am counting on playing it again soon! It has the right content, game depth and purpose without all the BS of current market. Thank you for this video!

Damn, finally someone who appreciates GRID for the music, I personally think it's the series' strongest aspect, and Ian really outdid himself recently for Legends' soundtrack, especially the GRID 1's remixes in the Ravenwest DLC. If I could listen to only one song for the rest of my life, it would definitely be Razor's Edge
@mrxbas Жыл бұрын
I actually had a listen to the GRID Legends "Reloaded" songs (in other words, remixed GRID 1 songs) from Ian Livingstone and although they are quite different in pacing, they're indeed still quite nice!
@Ha_Pe_Wu Жыл бұрын
@@mrxbas I think the ingame versions of GRID 1's songs were sped up by about 9-10% because the official OST for GRID 1 has them matching the pace of Legends' versions so maybe when Ian was remaking them for Legends he just used the original intended pacing

TL:DR -- At the time, and still to this day, GRID is respected as the best arcade racer in recent times. I'm still playing this right now. I have all the GRID games and played all of them through in full. Code Masters are the kings of racing games. This video covers all the amazing things that make GRID a fan favourite among racers, even if they prefer sim racing. Progression, model physics, integrated storyline, the feel of extreme speed, multiple racing disciplines, and a low-key lore that was expanded upon in GRID Legends, makes this franchise a must have for any fan of racing games. I enjoyed ToCA and Dirt. ToCA and Cart World Series (Sony Interactive) were my two first racing games on the PS1 when I first got the console. At that moment, racing games became my favourite genre of gaming, hands down. I enjoy everything Code Masters and this to me was their crowning glory franchise. Some will say Dirt, others may say their F1 series. Sim is fine, but sim-cade or straight arcade is where the fun is. Thrash cars into a corner, trade paint with opponents and drive flat out with no fear is what makes this franchise top. Thank you for showcasing such an amazing game. With GT Sport and 7, Forza Horizon and Motorsport out there, sim has become the new hype. It's always nice to just dial back and just blasting around a track at full throttle for sheer fun.

One of my most favourite games of all time, played through it at least 3 times. Even though I installed it a few years after the game was released, I was blown away by how good its arcade or simcade side was done. Also totally agree - soundtrack just perfect.

Idk where in the Netherlands you live, but in Tilburg, there's an arcade called "the gaming factory" where they have the GRID arcade cabinet. You also just pay a flat entrance fee instead of on a per game basis. They also have a lot of other cool racing game cabinets if you're interested.

Grid was awsome ; i remember that one race with extreme high end cars where i was runing 2nd after a shunt at the start line on some city course; and the leader wouldnt give up an inch... was riding his bumper all along the race but could out brake it and had less acceleration that it ... that is ; untils the last corner on the last lap ; when he downshifted ; his engine blew up with an amazing smoke puff ( me not understanding right away ... moving out the way , on the inside ; as fast as possible while hard on the brakes ) and him lokcing up the wheels and spining out into the outside barrier of the corner .... EPIC moment of racing from that game ; i dont think i ever had something that close as a race yet with such a twist that made me enjoy the sim more than the race itself. what a race it was. that being said ; i also remember how bad the online races could get ; and real fast.....

Damn, good memories. I played this game a lot. One satisfying thing that I haven't seen too many games doing is keeping track how many miles you've driven the car and also when you were purchasing 2nd hand ones it would say how many they've got on the clock, directly affecting its performance the more used cars were. Extremely fun gameplay and graphics for the time as well. Heck, I would have absolutely no problem with the details of the game even now in 2023.

I've played the arcade version, it have a nice story. I was 20, i bought my very first cool car with my savings, a nissan s13 wich at that time was extremely cheap and i started to attend the local car meets. I ended up being friend with people from the honda club and we were going out all togheter at events and places, we really had tons of fun togheter. This group had a VIP, a nationwide know honda tuner which hold a reputation of being an extremely talented driver, and he really is. All this fun ended at a cinema night when we went into the arcade after the movie, the arcade had a four seat grid station and being all car people we istantly sat and racing. We started racing and after a lap i was leading, with the VIP on my butt and we were lapping the other two friends. He never lose, he never lost, he used to hold some sort of being an untouchable monster in tracks and in racing games. Yet he was doing it in front of his friends, clients and girlfriend against some unknow stupid kid who just had his first car. He could not belive what was happening so during the first race he cornerbombed me, taking his win with force. In the second race, since he was scummy i decided to stay behind for all the race, just to splitstream to victory during the final straight. It worked, i won the race into the disbelief of everyone. I've beaten the local legend in front of everyone and i was even praised by his girlfriend. "Oh man this little kid really know his shit, maybe he's better than you ahah" After that night he started to be openly hostile on me everytime we were togheter, used to try constantly to bring my "reputation" down with bullshit and soon after they stopped inviting me out. So at that point i understood all the fun with this new group of petrolfriend ended. Now 13 years passed, and when i met him at our car events he still holds the grudge lol, in a more mature way but the bruise of that spectacular L still hurt him after all this time.

Back in 2008 or so, I remember going to a massive local lan party (about 200+ computers on site) and watching this game being played on a massive projector at max graphics on one of the Europe tracks (the one that you go through the city) with all the reflections and HDR-like features. Blew my mind, back then I had a mid-end Geforce 8600GT and it was just barely enough to run Crysis at medium graphics... but this game ran amazingly good on my right, so we spent hours and hours racing through LAN multiplayer. The sense of speed and camera blur from the cockpit blur never stopped amazing me. You guys have to understand that at this time, the most advanced graphics were at NFS Carbon (Bump mapping on the roads with proper texturing), and then this came out, looking fresh and being the first "proper next gen" racer for that console generation.

It looks great. Not sure why some people prefer it darker blue. I'd mod the my team menu so that 'change name' was last on the menu, and 'Sponsor' was first. You can wreck a car instantly and be out of the race. Love it

Loved this game. For a “arcade” game I still love the handling of it compared to much more serious games today. The way the cars bounce over curbs and lose traction of individual wheels combined with the extreme damage model really made them feel real in a way I don’t think even Codemasters have gotten right since.

this was my only ps3 game for almlst 2 years, because hacking a ps3 wasn't in the sight of a 10yr old child (me) i didn't knew any english, I've been playing for months without even knowing that thetr was a campaign, and it took months for me to beat the game GRID is still my favorite racing game, drifting is amazing, the car destruction and sound design is still amazing to this day, the soundtrack is memorable, even tough it isn't playing the whole time i still remember it all of those years later it's weird for me to say this but i have an emotional attachment to this racing game, all of the later entries are still good games but the 1st GRID still gets a place in my heart

I haven't played too many 7th gen or newer racing games, but Grid 1 and Dirt 3 have to be a couple of my favorite physics/handling models I've played on. I think the ideal solution for most racing games would be to simulate weight/mass, inertia/bumps, and suspension geometry *extremely* accurately, engine/transmission *mostly* accurately, have a relatively *arbitrary/simple (but functional) tire model,* have a *mostly accurate aero* model that *changes midair so that cars jump/land straight* and you have a touch of midair control, then make all the *chassis infinitely/perfectly stiff* so that's not a factor that messes with handling. This way, the correct things are simulated so that setup and power/weight ratios matter, while the devs can dial in unrealistically high grip to make things easier/faster/more fun, and at the same time, jumping a car isn't a possible death sentence since you won't typically land on your roof/side/nose/tail unless you hit an angled ramp or otherwise REALLY force it to happen.
