Ive watched hundreds of lawncare videos but you gave the best explanation of NPK I've ever heard, up-down-all around. I think pre-emergent is the best way to stay weed free and have a good lawn but so many beginners forget about about fertilizing. Awesome video, thanks for all the info.

Leesah, thank you so much for the kind words! Pre-emergent definitely cuts down on the weed pressure. Once you get your grass thick enough, the weeds have nowhere to attach their seeds into the ground and you don’t need any kind of weed killers or preventers. Thanks for watching.

I stage my fertiliser inputs too, (cold season) but all organic, with a stuff that is similar to the US Milorganite and another nice fertiliser that I use is a sheep wool/horn meal mix, slow release phosphorous perfect for our summer season, it adds carbon to the soil too, nettle tea is high in iron so I brew that stink up and feed it to the lawn as well as a molasses spray in the winter and early spring. I think you need the soil free of chemicals to work it's magic, and a textured mass to help the soil retain moisture better, my lawn is currently a deeper shade of green than my chemical neighbour's robot mown yard is right now, even though it is only a quarter as big!

Did you ever tell us your origin story on lawn knowledge? This is more than just "Dad knowledge", and I know you're a teacher. Once all that snow melted, I noticed I really need to thicken up the immature growth I have. Last year was had for dandelions and crab grass. Plus I have muddy areas that I need to seed too. So I have a lot of work to do.
@lakehouselawncare1755
@lakehouselawncare1755 3 жыл бұрын
😂 dad knowledge. I love that. Grass and soil biology has become a passion of mine and I’ve learned from my own mistakes along the way. For your situation, you could use the Scotts starter fertilizer with the crabgrass preventer. It has the same active ingredient as Tenacity, so you could also seed with it. For the dandelions, you could spot spray them with a weed b gon or use a stand up weed puller like I do.

I get that most people aren't that into lawncare, but everyone should really get a soil test. There are a lot of areas in the country that have enough phosphorus in the soil to last for decades. These starter ferts and others that contain phos are just not necessary for a lot of people. I would focus more on Ph and getting that into an optimal range. That will have a much larger effect than dumping unnecessary nutrients on your lawn year after year. I would even go as far as saying most people could get by on a nitrogen-only plan, however you have to be careful with things like urea and AS, but they're a lot cheaper and can be used safely with the right knowledge.
@lakehouselawncare1755
@lakehouselawncare1755 3 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you, and I mentioned at the end of the video that getting a soil test is the best way to determine what, if any, macronutrients should be supplemented. I appreciate your feedback and knowledge on the topic and thanks for watching!

I just bought a new place and thats how I'm planning to approach this. I figure that with good fundamentals I should (hopefully) have a managably small amount of weeds, which I can hand pull. I like the idea of overseeding for building a strong future turf that is a defense against weeds. Hopefully it'll work out and I will feel the same way next year.
