Nice. Great test. A few things that I would factor in as variables however are cost and availability. 2 in 1 Rustoleum for example is $11 here in Canada, but it is actually kind of difficult to find. Duplicolor can be found, but only at Canadian tire and is $18. I've never seen the other ones. I realize we're all in different places, but cost is a factor in my opinion. One other variable I would look into is post cure durability. I'm currently half way through a Scout Trooper helmet and I've already dented the primer (2 in 1) on a few occasions. I'm curious if the overall hardness of the primers is different once fully cured. Finally, I think one other variable I would factor in is wet/vs dry sanding. I wonder if any of them perform better under those different techniques.
@Darkwingdad2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input! I did do a pricing & availability rating in part 1. A cure test would definitely be a great post test to do which I’ve thought of. Great minds think alike!

Hey! I just today watched your video on using upol 1k combination and wanted to basically exactly replicate your process for sanding and filling prints but unfortunately came to discover that the bondo filler primer spray had been discontinued. What would you go with as a second choice? Have you found anything remotely similar?

@scratchinjack6082 жыл бұрын
Yep. Can't rush primer fillers. For me, 24 hours, minimum. A week even better. Oddly enough. I wet sand and it does reduce clumping and clumping happens more to finer sandpaper so got to be very gentle
@Darkwingdad2 жыл бұрын
I just hate introducing water into a semi porous filler, slows down progress that’s why for me bondo is the best. Sand it with 400/600 & it’s buttery smooth
@ImmortalReaver Жыл бұрын
What's your usual order of operations for sanding? I did one quick pass of 80 grit with a power sander on this part and one layer of primer. The can says to do 3 layers. Wondering if I should do 2 more layers or move up in grit sanding by hand after 1 layer of primer in between each round of sanding. Or do you do the 3 coats in a row still?
@Darkwingdad Жыл бұрын
First things first always use a putty. It is going to speed up the process immensely. Do not rely on just filler primer, it’s a step, not a staple. Sand with 80 followed by 120 (80 leaves the surface gouged up) apply putty, sand with 220 Apply filler primer Sand with 320 Repeat as needed. I have several videos on how utilize a proper putty will not only speed up post processing but also improve your quality

I’m new to all of this but do you need a mask when applying the primer? if so, what kind of masks should one look for?
@Darkwingdad2 жыл бұрын
Yes, all these primers contain thinners & solvents a 3m respirator is best but if you have a spray tent & are outdoors you can “cheat” with a 3m dust mask that has the filter on the front. Some with argue but with a exhaust fan & being outdoors it’s ok in a sense. If indoors 100% use a respirator, if you need links let me know

seems like i would go with the krylon for more detail work and bondo for the heavier and flatter surfaced. i have only used the rustoleum 2:! and man did it clump even days later
@Darkwingdad2 жыл бұрын
I honestly don’t know how people use rustoleum! Once you get the spray technique with krylon it really isn’t all that bad! And bondo, yea you can’t go wrong with it. BIG tip which I didn’t mention, a water based primer is ok ON TOP of a solvent based(krylon over bondo) but solvent based on top of water based you want to give adaquate time for the water base to fully cure

it feels good to know youer not stupid , lol i used rustoliom and lost my mind because of how long it took to dry to matter how light of layer i spray , now after watching you i got to know why , FYI, if you guys wanna speed up the prosses place your coated models inside of any UV light machine i have one form my resin printer and i managed to make it dry in almost 2 hours instead of 2 days well without UV it took more than 2days . thanks a ton for this amazing Video man .

I hope you can answer this but it may be beyond the scope of this test. What if I have already used Rustoleum Filler Primer on my 3D printed armor & done light hand sanding. Is it possible to add another filler primer type/brand or would that cause an improper chemical reaction/orange peeling? I've heard Rustoleum & Krylon DO NOT get along well together.

You can you just want to be careful and give the rustoleum a few days to completely cure & make sure it’s sanded down a good bit.
