Still rocking my one-owner 2002 GLS 1.8T with the sport suspension and 17" wheel options. Still a great car even in slightly lesser trim without the mods shown here. Fun to drive and tremendously dependable. Just spent twice the book value getting it repainted, plan to hold on to it as long as possible. Love the early ones before VW started adding bright work to the exterior and the instrument panel - it looks like a spaceship inside at night with the pure blue and red dash lights that even extend to the factory Monsoon radio. Even with the weathered paint I smile every time I walk up to it.

I came across a 2004 gli In almost perfect condition. It’s the dark grey color 6 speed manual. With 62,000 miles one owner. For $5,100 I bought it. Figured I would probably never come across another one in that condition. Great video!

I bought my 05 Platinum Grey GLI December 26th of 08, home on leave from the USAF. 3 years old, 72,000 miles, I got it for $10,500 out the door. That car carried me through my whole enlistment, and a few years as a civilian after that until it was taken by some asshole who ran a red light... By that point it was running GIAC X+ with a K04, FMIC, and 3" turbo-back. Tasteful, but probably around 300whp. Those BBS RC wheels are so light, i always hated seeing people swap them off. They bend easily, and I lost like 5 tires to DC/Maryland potholes - but all that can be fixed... I got more unsolicited, "Beautiful car!" comments with a visually stock GLI than I've gotten with anything I've driven before/since. Nothing but great memories, this video was a great nostalgia trip! Now I kinda wanna buy one and built the tits off of it...

It's so cool that kids are into the MKIV's from when I was in High School (and into my first year and a half of college). I have owned more MKIV VW's than any other brand of car overall lol...they're just such great cars. Having a knowledge of the 2 (major) 1.8t and VR6 engines makes it really easy to just pick up and mod a 'new' one if I grabbed one today. I'm not as familiar with the V6 Passat engine, unfortunately. The only Passats I owned from that era were the MK5.5's and the 2 I've owned were both 1.8T's (I wasn't dumb enough to get the W8 lol). Anyways, ya really cool to see younger people in their 20's interested in these cars!

Vws don't like cheap AutoZone/advance replacement parts. FCP euro is a great supplier ,and offers lifetime warranty on parts. Heck, they even warranty used oil if you want to take them up on it. There's other suppliers , but try and stay away from the box store replacement parts as they don't last. That's probably the best basic info I can give ya from messing with these things for 30yrs.

If ur going get this car make sure to look into the engine n see nothing is wrong with it. Also I advise u some of the parts are plastic witch crack over time like the water pump. Also the hoses are rubber witch get brittle n ware out over time. Mostley if u looking into customizing n upgrading a car with a expensive parts then go ahead. But if u wanna save u money get you a Honda or other car. I bought my jetta for $1000 but came with a issue shifting hashing n turned out to be the computer witch is comon with this cars. Altho I love it just the feel n the look. But let me know what u think.

Heh ,prices are interesting. Dad's 91 Jetta diesel coupe was like 12,600 new. Moms (new in 19) 2019 Jetta base model was 16,800 out the door ,which was cheaper than the 2007 (18k)Jetta base model it replaced ! I paid the same as dad's coupe for a 2yo(at the time) pre-owned 2014 Jetta. Her old 99.5 gls vr6 was a pre-owned too in 01, we paid 18,600 which was only like 1500 less than a new one. Not a rip but not a great deal either but they all served us well over the years.

I bought my 2003 VW Jetta 1.8T new and am now on my second one. The auto will only last 160,000 miles when the engine is performance modded to any significant degree, another reason to go manual! My original engine is still going strong at 215,000 miles. I installed it myself (just using the internet) into a 2004 Jetta and I'm still buying upgraded power mods for it. Of course, owning an old car means practically everything else will wear out so be sure you are planning to turn your own wrenches! But top quality parts are comparatively cheap...not so much all the tires you will wear out.

Bro I love the video but a slow car to go fast in I'll tell you this bro I'm 31 and I know my 04 gli and I can keep up with some of the stock ss Camaro and 5.0s if you learn the right way to drive it and do the turbo you won't have no problem with the v8 awd are tricky but you have to have the right timing to shit and get the turbo half way boosted with in your shift points to help with AWD but I understand it's your friends car and they keep it very clean but love the video keep it up

Ram Valdez yea you can race these things. I had a tune, turboback exhaust and a CAI. Thing made 200 something Hp since it was an AWP block tuned to 180hp off the jump, thing was pretty quick until I blew it up. And now she sits.

Ram Valdez Do what? I smoked plenty of people with the car when it still ran. Doesn’t work anymore though, rear main seal blew and I just haven’t had the time to put everything back together lol
